제목: 세상이 감당하지 못하는 사람들

그들은 믿음으로 나라들을 이기기도 하며 의를 행하기도 하며 약속을 받기도 하며 사자들의 입을 막기도 하며…(이런 사람은 세상이 감당하지 못하느니라) 그들이 광야와 산과 동굴과 토굴에 유리하였느니라(히11:33,38)
히11장, 믿음장 강해 20번째 시간입니다. 히브리서 기자는 믿음장 강해를 거의 마무리하면서 믿음으로 하나님을 기쁘시게 한 수많은 믿음의 선진들이 보여준 삶을 크게 두 가지 범주로 구분하고 있습니다. 이를 통해 성경에서 말하는 진정한 믿음을 살펴보고자 합니다.
1. 믿음으로 세상을 이긴 사람들(32-35a): 먼저 히브리서 기자는 구약 성경에 나오는 믿음의 사람들을 마지막으로 나열하면서 대표로 모두 여섯 사람의 이름을 언급하고 있습니다. 사실 지면상 그 많은 믿음의 선진들을 다 일일이 나열하는데는 한계가 있습니다. 그래서 이렇게 말합니다. “내가 무슨 말을 더 하리요 기드온, 바락, 삼손, 입다, 다윗 및 사무엘과 선지자들의 일을 말하려면 내게 시간이 부족하리로다”(32절) 그런데 이들의 공통점은 세상적인 안목으로 보았을 때는 특별한 사람들이 아닌 우리 같이 인간적인 약점이나 치명적인 허물을 가진 사람들을 선택해서 믿음의 영웅들로 내세우는 것을 보게 됩니다.
그럼에도 불구하고 오늘 본문에 그들의 이름이 기록이 되어 있는 이유가 무엇입니까? 오직 한 가지, 믿음 때문입니다. 하나님은 이런 연약한 사람들을 통해 위대한 일을 행하셨습니다. 우리도 마찬가지입니다. 부족합니다. 허물이 많습니다. 그러나 우리가 하나님께 소망을 두고 나아갈 때 하나님은 우리의 과거를 탓하지 않으시고 우리의 부족과 허물을 들추어내지 아니하시고 오직 우리의 믿음을 보시고 기뻐하시며 우리를 믿음의 사람으로 인정하시며 우리를 통해 놀라운 일들을 이루어 가신다는 것입니다. 한마디로 믿음의 능력입니다. 예수님은 이 믿음의 능력이 얼마나 큰지 산을 움직일 수 있고(마17:20), 모든 것을 할 수 있다(막9:23) 말씀하십니다.
그런데 본문 33-35a에는 한편 이런 연약한 사람들이 믿음으로 세상을 어떻게 이기었는지 구체적으로 보여주고 있습니다. “그들은 믿음으로나라들을 이기기도 하며” 구체적으로 어떤 사건들입니까? 모세와 여호수아처럼 다른 나라와 싸워 이긴 역사적 사건을 의미합니다. 또 “의를 행하기도 하며”(다윗, 엘리야), “약속을 받기도 하며”(다윗 언약), “사자들의 입을 막기도 하며”(다니엘), “불의 세력을 멸하기도 하며”(다니엘의 세 친구), “칼날을 피하기도 하며”(다윗, 엘리야), “연약한 가운데서 강하게 되기도 하며”(히스기야, 드보라, 기드온), “전쟁에 용감하게 되어 이방 사람들의 진을 물리치기도 하며”(아브라함, 여호수아, 사사들, 다윗), “여자들은 자기의 죽은 자들을 부활로 받아들이기도 하며”(엘리야 시대 때 사르밧 과부, 엘리사 때 수넴 여인)
이것이 믿음으로 세상을 이긴 사람들의 모습입니다. 그리고 이처럼 우리가 하나님을 믿고 하나님을 전적으로 의지할 때 하나님의 능력으로 우리가 승리하게 되는 것입니다. 본문 33-35a에 기록된 사람들은 한마디로 “형통한 믿음의 사람들”이라고 할 수 있습니다. 이들은 믿음으로 엄청난 승리와 기적을 맛본 사람들입니다. 그렇습니다. 믿음은 우리에게 이런 승리와 이김과 기적을 가져다줍니다(요일5:4)
2. 믿음으로 고난을 이긴 사람들(35b-38): 이처럼 믿음으로 큰 승리와 엄청난 기적을 맛본 사람이 참 많습니다. 그러나 또 반면에 오히려 하나님을 잘 믿고 섬겼기 때문에 더 고통을 당하고 어려움을 겪은 사람도 참 많습니다. 우리가 꼭 기억해야 할 것은 믿음은 항상 좋은 결과가 있는 것만은 아니라는 것입니다. 그래서 본문 35절 하반절 이하에는 이렇게 말씀하고 있습니다. “…또 어떤 이들은 더 좋은 부활을 얻고자 하여 심한 고문을 받되 구차히 풀려나기를 원하지 아니하였으며 또 어떤 이들은 조롱과 채찍질뿐 아니라 결박과 옥에 갇히는 시련도 받았으며 돌로 치는 것과 톱으로 켜는 것과 시험과 칼로 죽임을 당하고 양과 염소의 가죽을 입고 유리하여 궁핍과 환난과 학대를 받았으니 (이런 사람은 세상이 감당하지 못하느니라) 그들이 광야와 산과 동굴과 토굴에 유리하였느니라”
이처럼 믿음의 사람들은 하나님 때문에, 믿음 때문에 고난과 핍박을 당했습니다. 그러나 그들은 구차히 풀려나가는 것을 원하지 않았습니다. 사실 조금만 자신의 신앙을 타협했으면 죽음과 고통을 면하고 살 수 있었지만 그러한 타협을 거부하고 믿음을 지키며 죽음의 길로 나아갔습니다. 왜 그렇겠습니까? 왜 하나님께서는 믿음으로 승리만이 아니라, 고난도 주시는 것입니까? 여기서 두 가지 점을 살려보아야 할 것입니다. 진짜 건강한 사람은 병원균이 몸에 없는 사람이 아니라 몸 속에 있는 병원균을 이기는 사람입니다. 이것은 세상을 살아가면서도 동일한 원리입니다. 우리는 끊임없이 우리 앞에 놓여 있는 악한 세력, 어려운 도전, 위기와 고난 속에서 이를 극복하며 살아가는 것입니다.
하나님께서는 이렇게 당신의 자녀들을 세워 가십니다. 그래서 어떤 이들에게는 이 땅에서 승리를 맛보게도 하시지만, 또 어떤 사람들에게는 이 땅에서 고난과 아픔을 겪게도 하시는 것입니다. 잊지 마십시요. 진정한 믿음, 진정한 승리는 고난도 이기는 것입니다. 고난을 이기지 못하는 믿음은 참된 믿음이 아닙니다. 성경 기자는 “이런 사람은 세상이 감당하지 못한다”(38절) 라고 합니다. 본래 이 말은 “이런 사람들에게 세상은 아무런 가치가 없다”는 뜻입니다. 믿음의 사람은 세상에서 아무런 가치를 두지 않기 때문에 세상에 마음을 빼앗기지 않습니다.
그러므로 믿음으로 승리하는 사람과 믿음으로 고난을 당하는 사람은 본질적으로 삶이 질적으로 동일합니다. 이것은 매우 중요한 말씀입니다. 우리는 예수를 믿고 고난을 당하는 사람과 예수를 믿고 영광을 누리는 사람이 우리의 눈에는 너무도 다르게 보이지만 사실은 그것은 동일합니다. 오늘 성경은 예수님 때문에 “형통한 사람”도 예수님 때문에 “순교한 사람”도 둘 다 “승리자”라고 선포합니다.
말씀을 마칩니다: 우리가 믿음으로 형통한 삶, 승리하는 삶을 살 수도 있고 믿음으로 인해 순교자의 삶을 살 수도 있습니다. 세상은 형통한 자는 성공한 사람, 순교한 사람은 실패한 사람으로 볼 수 있지만 하나님이 보시기에 성공은 “믿음을 따라 산 삶”이고 실패는 “믿음으로 살지 않은 삶” 입니다. 우리 모두 세상에 너무 가치를 두지 마시고, 우리에게 주신 약속들을 붙드시고 어떤 상황에서도 믿음으로 승리하시기 바랍니다.

Title: The People Whom the World was Not Worthy of

“who through faith conquered kingdoms, administered justice, and gained what was promised; who shut the mouths of lions,… the world was not worthy of them. They wandered in deserts and mountains, and in caves and holes in the ground. (Hebrews 11:33, 38 – NIV)
Today is the 20th series of the Book of Hebrews, chapter 11, the chapter of faith. As the writer of the Book of Hebrews nearly concludes the series on the chapter of faith, he divides the lives of the countless ancestors of faith who had pleased God by faith into two categories. Through this, let us examine the true faith that is spoken in the Bible.
1. People who have overcome the world by faith (verses 32-35a): First, the writer of the Book of Hebrews lists the names of the people of faith from the Old Testament, by mentioning the names of six people as representatives. In fact, there were limits to listing all the ancestors of faith since there were too many people and they could not all be written down. So that is what the writer said, “And what more shall I say? I do not have time to tell about Gideon, Barak, Samson, Jephthah, David, Samuel and the prophets,” (verse 32). However, what these people had in common was that from the worldly perspective, they were not special people, but rather people like us, with human weaknesses and critical flaws. These people were chosen as the heroes of faith.
Nevertheless, why were their names recorded in today’s scripture? It was only because of one thing – it was because of their faith. God had done great things through these weak people. It is the same with us. We are lacking. And we have many transgressions. But when we leave our hope to God, God does not blame our past, and does not expose our weaknesses or faults, but instead only sees our faith and rejoices, and acknowledges us as people of faith, and uses us to accomplish wonderful works. In short, it is the power of faith. Jesus says that the power of this faith is so great that it can move the mountain (Matthew 17:20) and that everything is possible (Mark 9:23).
However, on the other hand, in verses 33-35a of today’s scripture, it showed in detail how these weak people had overcome the world by faith. “who through faith conquered kingdoms,” Specifically, what kind of events were these? They referred to the historical events, such as Moses and Joshua, when they fought against other the nations and won. Also, they “administered justice,” (David, Elijah), “and gained what was promised;” (David’s covenant); “who shut the mouths of lions,” (Daniel), and “quenched the fury of the flames,” (Daniel’s three friends), “and escaped the edge of the sword;” (David, Elijah); “whose weakness was turned to strength;” (Hezekiah, Deborah, and Gideon); “and who became powerful in battle and routed foreign armies.” (Abraham, Joshua, Judges, David), “Women received back their dead, raised to life again.” (the widow at Zarephath in Elijah’s day; the woman in Shunem in Elisha’s day).
This was the how the people overcame the world by faith. Similarly, when we believe in God and rely on God entirely, we become victorious by the power of God. The people recorded in verses 33-35a of today’s scripture, can be said in short as the, “prosperous people of faith”. These were people who had experienced tremendous victories and miracles by faith. That is correct. Faith brings us this victory, win, and miracle (1 John 5:4).
2. People who have overcome hardships by faith (35b-38): Like this, there are many people who have experienced great victories and miracles through faith. However, on the other hand, there are many people who have suffered more pain and difficulties because they believed and served God. What we must remember is that faith does not always have good results. So, in the latter half of verse 35, of today’s scripture, it says: “Others were tortured and refused to be released, so that they might gain a better resurrection. Some faced jeers and flogging, while still others were chained and put in prison. They were stoned; they were sawed in two; they were put to death by the sword. They went about in sheepskins and goatskins, destitute, persecuted and mistreated— the world was not worthy of them. They wandered in deserts and mountains, and in caves and holes in the ground.”
Likewise, the people of faith suffered and were persecuted because of God and because of faith. But they did not want to be released cowardly. In fact, if they compromised their belief even a bit, they could have avoided death and suffering, but they refused to compromise and kept their faith and went on the path of death. Why did they do that? Why does God not only give victory through faith, but also sufferings? There are two things to consider here which we must not miss. A real healthy person is not a person who does not have pathogens, but a person who overcomes pathogens in the body. This is the same principle in life. We must constantly overcome in the midst of evil forces, difficult challenges, crises and sufferings that are ahead of us.
God builds your children like this. So, for some people He allows them to taste victory on this earth, and for other people, He allows them to experience sufferings and hurt on this earth. Please do not forget. True faith, true victory is to overcome sufferings. Faith that cannot overcome sufferings is not true faith. The writer of the Bible says, “the world was not worthy of them” (verse 38). Originally, this meant, “the world was of no value to these people“. People of faith do not lose their hearts to the world because they place no value in the world.
Therefore, those who overcome by faith and those who suffer by faith are essentially the same thing. This is very important. People who believe in Jesus, yet suffer, and people who believe in God, and yet enjoy the glory because they overcame by faith, may appear so different in our eyes, but in fact they are the same. Today, the Bible declares that both the “people who overcome by faith”, because of Jesus and “people who are martyred because of faith”, because of Jesus are both “winners”.
Concluding the sermon: We can live a prosperous life, a victorious life, or a martyr’s life through faith. The world may view a prosperous person as a successful person, and a martyred person as a failed person. However, in God’s eyes, success is, “a life that lives according to faith” and failure is “a life that does not live according to faith”. Let us not put value in the world as much but hold on to the promises we have been given and overcome by faith in all circumstances.
