제목: 주의 말씀이 힘이 있어

어떤 사람들은 마음이 굳어 순종하지 않고 무리 앞에서 이 도를 비방하거늘 바울이 그들을 떠나 제자들을 따로 세우고 두란노 서원에서 날마다 강론하니라…이와 같이 주의 말씀이 힘이 있어 흥왕하여 세력을 얻으니라(행19:9,20)
사도행전 강해 72번째 시간입니다. 오늘 본문은 사도 바울의 3차 전도 여행의 중심 사역지인 에베소에서의 2년 3개월에 걸친 전반적인 사역을 기록하고 있습니다. 특별히 오늘 본문은 바울의 에베소에서의 성공적인 복음 증거의 사례를 소개하고 있는데 그 성공의 원인이 무엇인가? 살펴보고자 합니다.
1. 말씀의 힘: 사도 바울이 에베소에 있는 제자들에게서 발견한 것은 첫째는 믿기는 믿는데 성령을 받지 못했다 하는 것을 알았고, 또 한 가지는 말씀이 약하다 라는 것을 알았습니다. 그래서 8절에 보니까 바울이 석 달 동안을 회당에서 말씀을 증거했습니다. 그런데 9절에 보니까 “어떤 사람들은 마음이 굳어 순종하지 않고 무리 앞에서 이 도를 비방하거늘 바울이 그들을 떠나 제자들을 따로 세우고 두란노 서원에서 날마다 강론하니라”
무엇보다도 이 에베소에서도 동일하게 바울이 전하는 하나님 나라 메지시를 듣고 복음을 받아들이지 않을 뿐만 아니라 오히려 복음을 비방하고 방해하며 논쟁을 일삼는 것을 보게 됩니다. 왜 이런 일이 끊임없이 복음을 증거하는 곳마다 계속 일어납니까? 성경은 이들이 진리의 말씀을 못 듣고 또 몰라서가 아니라 “마음이 굳어 순종치 아니한다”고 말하고 있습니다. 그래서 우리가 지금 하나님의 은혜 가운데 있는가 아닌가는 어떻게 알 수 있는가 하면 하나님의 말씀이 선포될 때에 그 하나님의 말씀이 받아들여지고 그 말씀이 믿어지고 그 말씀에 순종하는 삶을 살고 싶으면 그것이 하나님의 성령이 우리 안에 임한 은혜의 결과이기 때문임을 알아야 합니다. 그러므로 하나님의 성령의 은혜가 우리 가운데 임하게 되면 하나님의 말씀을 듣는 것이 기쁘고 그 말씀이 믿어지고 순종하고 싶은 마음이 든다는 것 잊지 마시기 바랍니다.
그래서 바울은 논쟁과 비방을 일삼는 유대인들로 말미암아 새로운 전도 전략을 세우는데 그것이 두란노 서원을 통한 복음 증거입니다. 우리는 두란노 서원이라고 하면 서점을 생각하기 쉬운데 이것은 신학교에 가까운 일종의 선교 센터입니다. 이곳에서 바울은 논쟁을 일삼는 사람들과 씨름하지 아니하고 제자들을 세워 집중적으로 말씀을 가르치는 사역을 합니다. 사도 바울은 사람을 변화시키는 것은 말씀이라 생각했기 때문입니다. 그래서 말씀이 뿌리를 내릴 때까지 말씀을 가르치는 일에만 오직 생명을 걸었습니다. 그랬더니 말씀으로 훈련 받은 결과 무슨 변화가 생겼습니까? 10절에 보니까 “두 해 동안 이같이 하니 아시아에 사는 자는 유대인이나 헬라인이나 다 주의 말씀을 듣더라”
그러니까 두란노 서원의 말씀 훈련 사역을 통해 복음이 무서운 속도로 아시아 전역으로 퍼져 나갔다 라는 것입니다 (20절) 그 증거가 요한 계시록에 보면 소아시아 7 교회가 나오는데 성경에 보면 바울이 갔던 곳은 에베소 밖에 없습니다. 그럼에도 불구하고 곳곳에 교회가 세워졌습니다. 그것은 바로 이 두란노 서원에서 말씀으로 훈련 받은 사람들이 각지에 가서 교회를 세웠기 때문입니다. 에베소에서의 이 놀라운 부흥은 성령을 받고 동시에 두란노 서원에서의 말씀의 강론! 그 때 폭발적인 복음의 능력이 나타났다 라는 것입니다. 그러므로 우리도 마찬가지입니다. 우리가 예수님의 제자로 온전히 세워지기 위해서는 말씀의 훈련을 받아야 합니다. 말씀 중심의 삶을 살아야 합니다. 이것이 우리를 새롭게 변화시킬 수 있는 하나님 나라의 원리입니다.
2. 균형 있는 신앙 생활이 힘입니다: 사도 바울이 주 에수의 이름으로 세례를 줄 때 성령이 임했습니다.(6-7절) 그러자 방언도 하고 예언도 하는 성령의 역사하심이 나타났습니다. 또 11절에 보니까 바울에게 놀라운 능력이 나타났습니다. 그래서 바울이 손수건, 앞치마를 가져다가 병자에게 얹으면 악귀가 쫓겨나가는 대단한 능력이 임하게 되었습니다. 그리고 마술을 행하던 많은 사람들이 은 5만 정도의 값어치가 되는 책을 가져와서 불태웠다고 합니다.(19절) 요즘으로 계산하면 50억 정도 됩니다. 그것을 다 태워 버렸습니다. 어마어마한 것이 아닙니까? 이 정도면 성경이 무엇을 강조하겠습니까? “예언했다, 방언했다, 사도 바울은 능력의 종이다”하며 바울의 설교 제목은 온통 “사도 바울의 앞치마, 사도 바울의 손수건, 방언 세미나, 예언 세미나” 이렇게 나아가야 할텐데 성경은 그런 것에는 전혀 관심이 없습니다.
20절에 보니까 “이와 같이 주의 말씀이 힘이 있어 흥왕하여 세력을 얻으니라” 이처럼 눈 앞에 드러나는 이적들과 사건에 대해서 관심을 갖기 보다는 하나님의 말씀에 초점을 맞춥니다. 그러므로 하나님의 교회가 해야 될 일은 하나님의 말씀과 하나님의 나라에 대해 관심을 갖고 말씀 중심, 복음 중심의 교회가 되는 것입니다. 왜 그렇습니까? 주의 말씀이 힘이 있기 때문입니다. 잊지 마십시요. 성령이 역사하시면 우리에게 많은 기적과 능력의 역사를 베풀어 주실 수 있습니다. 성경에도 나오는 일이고 지금도 실제 있을 수 있는 일입니다. 그러나 그것은 말씀의 역사 가운데 믿음으로 반응할 때 나오는 부산물입니다. 그러나 문제는 이런 것들에 너무 집착하면 사역이 다 흩트려져 버립니다. 그러므로 우리도 바울처럼 지혜롭게 하나님께서 주시는 균형의 사역을 잃지 않는 믿음의 종들이 되시기 바랍니다. 이게 성도의 삶입니다. 이런 균형 있는 신앙인이 되지 않으면 본문 13-17절에 나오는 어리석음과 정말 부끄러운 수치를 당할 수가 있습니다. 왜 이런 일이 일어납니까? 믿음을 흉내 냈기 때문입니다. 하나님과의 관계보다 기적과 능력에 관심을 두었기 때문입니다. 잊지 마십시요. 가짜 신앙은 귀신에게도 무시를 당합니다. 주님 바라 보십시요. 그러면 이런 부끄러운 수치에서 이길 수가 있습니다.(시25:3)
말씀을 마칩니다: 성령이 우리 가운데 임하시면 놀라운 기적과 능력이 나타납니다. 그러나 우리 눈 앞에 드러나는 이런 기적들에 대해서 관심을 갖기보다는 하나님의 관계에 초점을 맞추는 삶을 사시기를 바랍니다. 진정한 능력은 믿음으로 말씀에 순종하는 삶을 살 때 나타납니다. 말씀과 성령의 사람이 되시기를 축복합니다.
There is Power in the Lord’s Word

Title: There is Power in the Lord’s Word

“But some became stubborn, rejecting his message and publicly speaking against the Way. So Paul left the synagogue and took the believers with him. Then he held daily discussions at the lecture hall of Tyrannus… So the message about the Lord spread widely and had a powerful effect.” (Acts 19:9, 20 – NLT)
Today is the 72nd series of the Book of Acts. Today’s scriptures records the two-year and three months overview of the ministry at Ephesus, which was the central ministry of Apostle Paul’s third evangelism journey. In particular, today’s scriptures introduces examples of Paul’s successful gospel preaching in Ephesus. Let’s take a look at what was root of this success.
1. The power of the Word of God: Apostle Paul discovered the following things about the disciples in Ephesus. First of all, it was that although they believed, they did not receive the Holy Spirit. Secondly, it was that they were weak in the Word of the Lord. That is why we see in verse 8, that Paul spoke for three months in the synagogue. But in verse 9 it says, “But some became stubborn, rejecting his message and publicly speaking against the Way. So Paul left the synagogue and took the believers with him. Then he held daily discussions at the lecture hall of Tyrannus.”
We also see in Ephesus that not only were there people who did not accept the Word of God preached by Paul, but also who slandered, obstructed, and created controversy. Why does this keep happening wherever the gospel is being preached? The Bible does not say that it is because they have not heard the Word of truth or because they simply do not know, but rather that “…some just became stubborn.” The way we can determine if we are right now in the grace of God or not is whether we are accepting the Word of God, believing in the Word of God, and wanting to live in obedience to the Word of God when the Word of God is being proclaimed. We must know that this is the result of the Holy Spirit coming upon us and His grace. Therefore, please do not forget that when the grace of God’s Holy Spirit comes upon us, we become joyful to hear God’s Word and want to believe and obey.
So Paul set up a new strategy of evangelism as a result of the Jews who argued and slandered against the gospel. It was the preaching of the gospel in the lecture hall of Tyrannus. When we think of lecture hall in Tyrannus, we may easily think of bookstores, however it was closer to a mission center and a Bible college. So at this place, Paul did not try to argue or fight against those who created controversy, but instead carried out the ministry by concentrating on the disciples. Apostle Paul believed that it was the Word of God that changed a man. So, until the Word of God took its roots, he only focused on teaching the Word. Therefore, what was the result of training them through the Word of God? Verse 10 says, “This went on for the next two years, so that people throughout the province of Asia—both Jews and Greeks—heard the word of the Lord.”
Through this ministry of training the people of God’s Word in the lecture hall of Tyrannus, the gospel spread across Asia at an alarming rate (verse 20). If you look at the Book of Revelation, there are seven churches of Asia, but the Bible tells us that the only place Paul went to was Ephesus. But nevertheless, churches were built everywhere. This is because the people who were trained by the Word of God at the lecture hall in Tryannus, went to various places and established churches. This remarkable revival in Ephesus occurred after the people received the Holy Spirit and at the same time were trained in the Word of God at the lecture hall. That is when the explosive power of the gospel emerged. Therefore, this is the same with us. We must be trained in the Word of God in order to become fully become disciples of Jesus. We must live a life centered on the Word of God. This is the principle of the Kingdom of God that will allow us to be transformed in a new way.
2. A balanced life of faith is strength: When Apostle Paul baptized the disciples in the name of the Lord Jesus, the Holy Spirit came on them (verses 6-7). Then the work of the Holy Spirit was revealed when they spoke in tongues and prophesied. If we look further in verse 11, we see how God did extraordinary miracles through Paul and gave him a remarkable power. So that even when handkerchiefs and aprons that had touched Paul were taken to the sick, their illnesses were cured and the evil spirits left them. In addition, many people who had practiced sorcery brought their scrolls together and burned them publicly. The scolls had a value of fifty thousand silver coins (verse 19). Is this not tremendous? If it was this significant, how would the Bible emphasize this? “They prophesied and spoke in tongues” or “Apostle Paul is a servant of power”? Or would the title of Paul’s sermons be labeled as: “Apostle Paul’s apron, Apostle Paul’s handkerchief, tongue seminar, prophecy seminar”? We would assume it would be like that, but in fact the Bible does not take interest on any of these things.
In verse 20 it says, “So the message about the Lord spread widely and had a powerful effect.” So the focus is on the Word of God rather than being concerned on the miracles and events that we see. Therefore, the church of God should be a church that is centered on God’s Word and the gospel and with an interest in God’s Word and God’s Kingdom. Why is this so? It because there is power in the Lord’s Word. Please do not forget. When the Holy Spirit works, He can give us many miracles and abilities. This happened in the Bible and it can still happen today. However, this is just a result and fruit of faith and the work of God’s Word. The problem is if you become too attached to these things, your ministry will become scattered. Therefore, I hope that we will be faithful servants who like Paul, wisely do not lose the balance life of faith. This is the life of the saints. If you do not become such a balanced believer, you may experience the foolishness and embarrassing shame as shown in verses 13-17. Why did this happen? It is because they imitated faith. They were interested in miracles and power rather than their relationship with God. Please do not forget. False faith even gets ignored by the evil spirits. Look to the Lord, and you can win against this shame. (Psalm 25:3).
Concluding the Word of God: When the Holy Spirit comes upon us, miracles and powers appear. However, rather than paying attention to those miracles that appear before our eyes, I hope that we can live a life that focuses on our relationship with God. True power appears when you live a life of obedience to the Word of God by faith. I bless you to become a person of the Word of God and of the Holy Spirit.
