제목: 호산나, 예수님에 대한 기대

앞에서 가고 뒤에서 따르는 자들이 소리 지르되 호산나 찬송하리로다 주의 이름으로 오시는 이여 찬송하리로다 오는 우리 조상 다윗의 나라여 가장 높은 곳에서 호산나 하더라(막11:9-10)
오늘은 종려 주일입니다. 종려 주일은 사순절 마지막 주간이며 고난 주간의 시작으로 예수님께서 나귀 새끼를 타고 예루살렘에 입성하신 것을 기념하는 주일입니다. 오늘 우리는 온 인류의 구원을 위해 십자가를 지시러 예루살렘에 입성하시는 예수님의 모습을 통하여 우리가 구원받은 하나님의 자녀의 특징이 무엇인가? 살펴보고자 합니다.
1.순종의 삶: 지금 예수님께서 인류의 구속사를 이루시기 위하여 드디어 예루살렘을 향하여 들어가고 계십니다. 그런데 예루살렘에서 아주 가까이 떨어진 감람 산 산등성이에 위치한 예루살렘이 한눈에 보이는 벳바게와 베다니에 가까이 가셨을 때에 제자 중 둘을 보내시며 나귀 새끼가 매여 있는 것을 보리니 풀어 끌고 오라고 말씀하십니다(1-2절). 사실 예수님은 갈릴리에서 예루살렘까지 대략 110km 되는 먼 거리를 걸어서 오셨습니다. 그런데 벳바게와 베다니에서 한 2km 남았습니다. 그냥 계속 걸어서 가시면 바로 예루살렘에 이르게 됩니다.
그런데 예수님이 걸어서 들어갈 수 있음에도 불구하고 굳이 어린 나귀 새끼를 타고 들어 가셨습니다. 왜 이렇게 하셨을까요? 이것은 우연한 일이 아닙니다. 예수님은 스가랴9:9의 “시온의 딸아 크게 기뻐할지어다 예루살렘의 딸아 즐거이 부를지어다 보라 네 왕이 네게 임하시나니 그는 공의로우시며 구원을 베푸시며 겸손하여서 나귀를 타시나니 나귀의 작은 것 곧 나귀 새끼니라” 라는 말씀을 이루시기 위해서 나귀를 타셨습니다. 예수님은 이 말씀대로 순종하기 위해서 나귀 새끼를 풀어 끌고 오라고 하신 것입니다.
당시 상황은 유월절이 다가오므로 수많은 사람들이 예루살렘에 모일 때입니다. 많은 사람들이 예수님에 대한 기대감을 갖고 있었습니다. 그런데 예수님이 바라보는 것은 사람들의 시선이 아니라 하나님의 말씀이었습니다. 사람들은 예수님이 왕처럼 말을 타고 그것도 백마를 타고 오시기를 기대했지만 예수님은 말씀대로 나귀 새끼를 타고 들어오셨습니다. 왜 그렇습니까? 언제나 하나님 말씀 앞에 순종하는 것이 중요하기 때문입니다. 그래야 십자가를 질 수 있고 그래야 승리할 수 있기 때문입니다.
예수님께서 두 제자에게 맞은 편 마을에 가서 매어 있는 나귀 새끼를 풀어 끌고 오라 말씀하시며 만일 왜 푸느냐 물으면 “주께서 쓰시겠다”라고 답하라 하셨습니다. 그랬더니 두 제가가 순종하여 그대로 행했습니다(3-4절). 그랬더니 나귀 주인이 “주께서 쓰시겠다”하자 곧장 순종합니다(5-6절). 우리에게 이 모습이 필요합니다. 아무리 재능이 뛰어나고 많은 것을 갖추었다고 할지라도 까다로운 사람은 하나님께 쓰임 받지 못합니다. 참으로 가진 것이 많습니다. 그런데 한번도 쓰임 받지 못했다 하면 그건 잘못 산 인생입니다. 왜 그렇습니까? “주께서 쓰시겠다” 할 때 불순종했기 때문입니다.
잊지 마십시요 순종할 때 기적이 일어납니다. 가나의 혼인 잔치 집 기적이 언제 일어났습니까? “…너희에게 무슨 말씀을 하시든지 그대로 하라…”(요2:5) 순종할 때 물이 변하여 포도주가 되는 기적을 맛보게 되었습니다. 우리의 삶 가운데 왜 이런 놀라운 역사가 일어나지 않습니까? 딴데서 원인을 찾지 마십시요. 순종이 없기 때문입니다. 믿음이 없기 때문입니다. 순종할 때 인생이 바뀝니다.
2. 호산나의 의미와 진짜 신앙: 본문7-10절을 보면 드디어 예수님이 나귀 새끼를 타고 예루살렘에 들어 가십니다. 사람들이 자기들의 옷을 벗어서 나귀 위에 깔아 드리고, 나뭇가지를 길에 펴고 겉옷도 벗어 깔았습니다. 그러면서 “호산나 주의 이름으로 오시는 이여” 하며 예수님을 높입니다. 여기서 “호산나”라는 말은 “기도하옵나니 우리를 지금 구원해 주시옵소서”라는 뜻입니다. 이 말은 지금 당시 예루살렘 사람들이 예수가 왕이며 구원자라는 기대를 가졌다는 증거입니다.
그러나 중요한 것은 그 당시의 이스라엘 백성들이 예수님에게서 구했던 구원이 과연 올바른 구원이었느냐는 것입니다. 그들은 메시야를 기다렸고 예수님을 메시야로 믿었습니다. 그러나 그들은 예수님을 단순한 로마의 압제로부터 또 가난과 궁핍에서 구원할 메시야로만 생각한 것입니다. 그 증거가 병행구절인 눅19:41절에 보면 “가까이 오사 성을 보시고 우시며” 예수님은 자신을 왕으로 맞이하는 환호성의 찬양 소리를 들으시면서 울고 계십니다. 주님은 지금 자신을 찬양하고 있는 이 무리들이 그들의 인간적인 기대를 만족시킬 수 없다는 사실을 알게 되면 돌변하여 폭도가 되어 찬양하던 그 입술로 “저를 십자가에 못 박으소서 십자가에 못 박으소서” 외치게 될 것을 아셨던 것입니다. 그래서 주님은 눈물을 흘리신 것입니다.
종려 주일을 맞이하여 우리는 예수님이 예루살렘에 입성하신 참된 의미를 알아야 합니다. 그 가장 근본적인 이유는 “십자기 지시기 위함”입니다. 바로 “죄”의 문제를 해결하시기 위해서입니다. 예수님은 우리를 부자 만드시기 위해서 이 땅에 오신 것이 아니라 저주와 사망의 뿌리인 “죄”에서 우리를 해방시키시기 위해서 예수님은 메시야로 이 땅에 오신 것입니다. 이 예수님을 영접하는 자마다 죄사함을 받고 하나님의 자녀가 되는 권세를 얻습니다(요1:12) 여러분은 구원받은 하나님의 자녀임을 확신하십니까? 그러면 받드시 예수님을 믿습니다.
말씀을 마칩니다: 예수님은 구원 사역의 완성, 곧 십자가 지시기 위해 예루살렘으로 가셨습니다. 예수님은 우리가 죄 용서함을 받고 행복하게 살도록 해주시려고 고통의 십자가 길을 가셨습니다. 십자가 지기 위해 가시는 예수님의 모습 속에서 주님의 사랑을 깊이 느끼는 그리고 우리의 구원을 다시한번 깊이 점검하는 의미 있고 축복된 종려 주일이 되시기 바랍니다.
Hosanna, the Expectation of Jesus

Title: Hosanna, the Expectation of Jesus

“Jesus was in the center of the procession, and the people all around Him were shouting, “Praise God! Blessings on the one who comes in the name of the Lord! Blessings on the coming Kingdom of our ancestor David! Praise God in highest heaven!” (Mark 11:9-10 – NLT)
Today is Palm Sunday. Palm Sunday is the last week of Lent and the start of the Passion Week and it commemorates the entry of Jesus to Jerusalem, riding on a young donkey. Today, we will take a look at what the characteristics of the children of God who are saved are, by taking a look at the image of Jesus entering Jerusalem to die on the cross for the salvation of all mankind.
1. A life of Obedience: Now Jesus was finally entering Jerusalem for the redemption of mankind. However, when He approached Jerusalem and came to Bethphage and Bethany, at the ridge of the Mount of Olives, where Jerusalem could be easily sighted, since it was very close to it, He sent two of His disciples and told them that they would find a young donkey tied there and to bring it to Him (verses 1 to 2). In fact, Jesus walked a long distance from Galilee to Jerusalem, of around 110 km. However, there was approximately two kilometers remaining from Bethphage and Bethany to Jerusalem. He would have had reached Jerusalem right away, if He kept on walking.
However, even though Jesus was able to enter in by walking on foot, instead, He rode on a young donkey. Why did you think He did this? This was not an accident. Jesus rode on a young donkey in order to fulfill the Words in Zechariah 9:9, “Rejoice, O people of Zion! Shout in triumph, O people of Jerusalem! Look, your King is coming to you. He is righteous and victorious, yet He is humble, riding on a donkey— riding on a donkey’s colt.“ Jesus told them to untie the donkey and to bring it to Him, in order to obey the Word of God.
The situation at that time was when the Passover was approaching and as such, thousands of people were going to gather in Jerusalem. Many people had expectations of Jesus. However, what Jesus was looking at was not the eyes of the people, but at the Word of God. People expected Jesus to come riding on a horse like a king and that too, on a white horse. However, Jesus entered riding on a young donkey as per the Word of God. Why was that? This is because it is always important to obey before the Word of God. In this way, we can take up the cross and can be victorious.
Jesus said to the two disciples, to go to the village ahead of them and to untie the colt and to bring it to Him. If anyone asked them why they were doing this, Jesus told them to tell them “The Lord needs it”. Then the two disciples obeyed and did exactly what they were told to do (verses 3 to 4). The owner of the donkey also obeyed as soon as they said to him, “The Lord needs it”. (Verses 5 to 6). Similarly, we need to be like this too. No matter how talented and well-equipped a person is, a difficult person cannot be used by God. They may have so many things. But if they were never used by God, then they lived their life wrong. Why is this so? This is because they disobeyed when Jesus said, “The Lord needs it”.
Please do not forget. Miracles happen when you obey. When did the miracle of the wedding feast in Cana happen? ‘…But his mother told the servants, “Do whatever he tells you…”’ (John 2:5). It is when they obeyed, that they tasted the miracle of the water changing to become wine. Why does this amazing work not happen in our lives? Please do not find the cause elsewhere. It is because there is no obedience. It is because there is no faith. When you obey, life changes.
2. The meaning of hosanna and the real belief: In verses 7 to10 (NLT), Jesus finally entered Jerusalem by riding on a young donkey. People took off their cloaks and laid them on the donkey and spread their outerwear cloaks and branches on the road. They exalted Jesus by saying, “Hosanna! Blessed is He comes in the name of the Lord!” The word “hosanna,” here means, “We pray, save us now”. This is evidence that at that time, the people of Jerusalem had the expectation that Jesus was the King and the Savior.
But the important thing is, whether at the time, the salvation that the Israelites wanted from Jesus was the right salvation. They waited for the Messiah and believed Jesus as the Messiah. But they only thought of Jesus as the Messiah who would simply save them from the Roman oppression and from poverty. The evidence of this is found in a parallel verse in Luke 19:41, “But as He came closer to Jerusalem and saw the city ahead, He began to weep.” Jesus wept as He heard the praise of cheers that greeted Him as king. The Lord knew that the crowds who were praising Him right now would suddenly turn into a mob against Him, when they found out that He could not meet their human expectations. Jesus knew that with the mouths with which they used to praise Him, would soon change to them crying out , “Crucify Him! Crucify Him!” That is why the Lord shed tears.
On Palm Sunday, we need to know the true meaning of Jesus’ entry into Jerusalem. The main reason was “to die on the cross”. It was to solve the problem of “sin”. Jesus did not come to earth to make us rich, but instead, Jesus came to the earth as the Messiah, to liberate us from the “sin,” which is the root of curse and death. Everyone who accepts Jesus is forgiven of their sins and obtain the right to become children of God (John 1:12). Are you sure that you are a saved child of God? Then you will believe in Jesus.
Concluding the sermon: Jesus went to Jerusalem to complete the work of salvation, that is, to die on the cross. Jesus took the road of suffering on the cross, in order to forgive us of our sins and to allow us to live happily. As we look at the image of Jesus on His way to the cross, I hope that you will have a meaningful and blessed Palm Sunday, as you deeply feel His love and also deeply examine your salvation once again.
