본문: 사도행전 22:1-29
제목: 진짜 예수를 만난 사람의 삶

그가 또 이르되 우리 조상들의 하나님이 너를 택하여 너로 하여금 자기 뜻을 알게 하시며 그 의인을 보게 하시고 그 입에서 나오는 음성을 듣게 하셨으니 네가 그를 위하여 모든 사람 앞에서 네가 보고 들은 것에 증인이 되리라(행22:14-15)
사도행전 강해 81번째 시간입니다. 오늘 본문은 사도 바울이 자기를 죽이려는 성난 유대 군중들 앞에서 자신을 변호하는 내용입니다. 바울의 메시지를 통해서 진짜 예수를 만난 바울의 삶과 선교 전략에 대해서 살펴보고자 합니다.
1.바울의 주된 관심/일관성 있는 삶: 사도 바울은 3차 전도 여행을 마치고 선교 보고차 예루살렘에 올라갔습니다. 그랬더니 바울이 예루살렘에 도착했다는 말을 듣고 그에게 적대감을 갖고 있던 수많은 유대 군중들이 성난 폭도로 변해 바울을 붙잡고는 죽이려고 성문 밖으로 데리고 갔습니다. 바로 그 때 소문을 들은 천부장이 군대를 이끌고 와서 폭행당하고 있는 바울을 빼내 영문 안으로 데리고 들어가려고 할 때 바울이 천부장에게 성난 유대 백성에게 말할 기회를 달라고 합니다. 그 내용이 오늘 본문의 내용입니다.
사도 바울은 지금 매를 실컷 얻어맞고 죽을 뻔했다가 로마 군인에게 잡혀서 영문으로 들어 가는 길입니다. 그렇지만 바울의 관심은 매를 맞든 안 맞든, 좋은 형편에 있든 아니든 상관없이 오로지 예수 그리스도였습니다. 그런데 바울은 자신을 변명함으로써 목숨을 구걸해야 하는 이 안타까운 처지에서 자신을 변호하기보다는 그리스도를 증거하고 있습니다. 그러니까 어떤 상황에 서든지 예수를 전하는 것에 바울의 관심이 있었습니다. 바울은 얻어맞더라도 복음만 전하면 기뻐했습니다. 그래서 성난 유대 군중들을 피해 로마 군인들에게 들려 가는 중에도 복음 전할 기회를 구해서 말하기 시작한 것입니다.(1-2절) 이런 사람이 사도 바울입니다.
저와 여러분의 관심은 어디에 있습니까? 무엇에 관심이 있는가가 그 사람을 말해 줍니다. 즉 내가 시간을 제일 많이 투자하고 생각하는 그것이 바로 나입니다. 아무리 예수를 잘 믿는다고 해도 그것은 진짜 그 사람이 아닙니다. 현재 우리가 제일 관심을 가지고 있는 그것이 바로 자신입니다. 여러분이 제일 사랑하는 것이 무엇입니까? 나의 관심사가 나의 인생의 가치를 결정합니다. 인생의 행복은 돈이나 세상에 있지 않습니다. 바울처럼 하나님이 주신 사명이 행복을 줍니다.
지금 바울은 삶과 죽음의 기로에 서 있습니다. 그런데 지금 바울의 이야기를 듣고 있는 사람들은 바울을 죽이려고 하는 사람들입니다. 그런데 너무 놀라운 것은 이런 자기를 죽이려고 하는 사람들 앞에서 하는 말과 자신을 따르는 사람들 앞에서 하는 말이 바울은 똑같습니다. 우리가 생각할 때에 이게 아무 것도 아닌 것 같지만 실은 대단한 것입니다.
본문 5-16절 까지는 다메섹 도상에서 예수 그리스도를 만나서 변화된 바울의 간증입니다. 이 바울의 간증이 사도행전에만 3번이 나옵니다. 그런데 놀라운 것은 바울이 간증을 통해 증거하는 메시지가 똑같다 라는 것입니다. 우리가 알고 있는 훌륭한 목회자들이 최근에 욕을 먹는 이유가 무엇입니까? 교회 안에서, 책 속에서 한 말하고, 세계 종교 지도자들 앞에서 한 말이 다르기 때문입니다. 목회 초기에 했던 복음의 메시지와 부흥하고 나서 하는 메시지가 다르기 때문입니다.
참된 신앙 생활이라는 것은 무엇입니까? 일관성 있는 믿음의 삶입니다. 그래서 교회 안에서 하는 말과 교회 밖에서 하는 말이 같아야 합니다. 교회 안에서의 모습과 교회 밖에서의 모습이 일관되어야 합니다. 우리의 문제가 무엇입니까? 가정과 직장에서는 있는 모습 그대로인데 교회 안에서만 거룩도가 올라가기 때문에 문제가 되는 것입니다. 그러므로 교회 안에서나 밖에서나 어디서나 늘 복음의 내용과 삶이 일치되는 믿음의 종들이 되시기를 바랍니다.
2.바울의 선교 전략/하나님께서 우리에게 주신 것을 다 활용하라: 본문 앞 절인 행21:37에 보니까 바울이 천부장에게 접근할 때는 헬라어로 접근했습니다. 그리고 난 다음에 또 유대인들에게 자신의 회심을 증언할 때에는 히브리어로 이야기를 합니다. 이렇게 이중 언어를 사용해서 그 때 그 때 적절한 언어를 구사해서 말을 했습니다. 그랬더니 유대인들의 반응이 어떻습니까? 본문 2절을 보니까 “그들이 그가 히브리 말로 말함을 듣고 더욱 조용한지라 이어 이르되” 자기들의 모국어로 말하니까 친근감을 갖고 받아 들이더라는 것입니다. 그리고 난 후 천부장이 채찍질하려고 할 때는 자기의 로마 시민권을 활용합니다.(25절)
이처럼 바울은 하나님께서 자신에게 주신 모든 기회와 모든 교육, 모든 체험을 사용함으로 그리스도를 증언했습니다. 사실 바울은 다메섹 도상에서 예수를 만나고 나서 “이 모든 것을 배설물로 여긴다”고 고백했습니다.(빌3:7-8) 그러나 이것은 세상과 등지는 삶을 사는 도피주의적인 삶을 산다 라는 의미가 아니라 자신의 삶의 가치관이 변했다 라는 의미입니다. 다시 말해서 성경에서 말하는 “버렸다”라는 의미는 나를 위해서 사용하던 것을 버렸다 라는 말입니다. 그리고 이제는 이 모든 것이 참으로 하나님의 영광을 위하여 또한 복음을 위해서만 사용되고 있다는 사실에 대한 고백입니다. 그러므로 우리도 하나님께서 우리에게 주신 것은 머리끝부터 발끝까지 모든 것을 다 활용해야 합니다. 그러나 자신의 자랑과 사욕을 위해서가 아니라 복음과 하나님의 영광을 위해서 사용하는 거룩한 종들 되시기 바랍니다.
말씀을 마칩니다: 바울처럼 우리도 나를 좋아하는 사람 앞에서 하는 말이든 나를 싫어하는 사람 앞에서 하는 말이든 우리의 신앙고백과 삶의 고백이 일관성 있는 은혜가 있기를 바랍니다. 더불어 모든 기회와 모든 교육, 모든 체험을 100% 잘 사용하여 주의 사명들을 잘 감당하시는 믿음의 종들이 다 되시기를 바랍니다.

Title: The Life of a Person Who has Really Met Jesus

“Then he told me, ‘The God of our ancestors has chosen you to know his will and to see the Righteous One and hear him speak. For you are to be his witness, telling everyone what you have seen and heard. (Acts 22:1-29 – NLT)
Today is the 81st series of the Book of Acts. Today’s scriptures is about apostle Paul defending himself in front of an angry Jewish crowd who is trying to kill him. Through Paul’s message, we will look at the life of Paul who really met Jesus and of his mission strategy.
1. Paul’s main interest / Consistent life: Apostle Paul went to Jerusalem to report about the mission after he completed the third evangelism journey. When they heard that Paul had arrived at Jerusalem, many Jewish crowds who were hostile to him turned into an angry mob and took Paul outside the gates to kill him. At that very moment, the commander of the Roman troops who heard of this news came with his army to take Paul who been beaten from the crowd into the barracks. But just when they were about to, Paul asked the commander if he could have the chance to speak to the angry Jewish people. This is the content of today’s scriptures.
So apostle Paul was on his way to the barracks after being arrested and taken away by the Roman troops from the crowd who had beaten and almost killed Paul to death. But Paul’s only concern was Jesus Christ, despite if he was beaten or not and whether or not he was in a good situation. Paul was witnessing Christ rather than defending himself in this unfortunate situation where he had to beg for his life by defending himself. So Paul’s interest was preaching about Jesus under any circumstances. Paul was glad to preach the gospel, even if he was beaten. So, while being escorted away from the angry Jewish crowd, he began to speak to the Roman soldiers for an opportunity to preach the Gospel (verses 1-2). This was who apostle Paul was.
Where is your interest and mine? You can tell a person based on what they are interested in. In other words, we invest the most time on ourselves and spend the most time thinking of ourselves. Just because we say that we are holy or appear to be holy, does not mean that we are. We take the most interest in ourselves. That is what we are most interested in today. What is it that you love the most? My interests determine the value of my life. The happiness of life is not money or the world. Instead, like Paul, God’s mission gives happiness.
Right now, Paul was standing at the crossroads of life and death. The people who were listening to Paul’s story right now were those who wanted to kill Paul. But what is so amazing is that Paul spoke the same thing to the people who were actually trying to kill him, as he would have done to those who followed him. When we think about this, it may seem like nothing, but it is actually a great thing.
Verses 5 to 16 are about Paul’s testimony of how he met Jesus Christ on the Damascus road and how he became changed. This testimony of Paul appears in the Book of Acts of the Bible three times. But what is surprising, is that Paul’s message is the same when he shares his testimony. Why is that recently popular pastors that we know of are being criticized? It is because the words they speak at church and through books, are different from the words they actually speak to the religious leaders of the world. This is because the message of the gospel that they preached in the early days of the ministry is different from the message they preach after their church revival.
What is a true life of faith? It is a life of consistent faith. So what you say at church must be the same as what you say outside of church. Your appearance at the church must be consistent with your appearance outside the church. What is our problem? It is that we are usually ourselves when we are with our family or at our workplace, but we tend to more “holy” when we are at church. Therefore, I hope that you will always be faithful servants of the gospel who match the content of the gospel with your life, whether you are within or outside of the church.
2. Paul’s mission strategy / We must use what God has given to us: If we look at the beginning of the passage in Acts 21:37, we see that Paul approached the commander in Greek. And then later he spoke Hebrew when he testified to the Jewish people about his conversion. So he used his bilingual language, in order to speak the appropriate language at that time. But how did the Jews react to this? In verse 2, it says, “When they heard him speaking in their own language, the silence was even greater.” Since Paul spoke in their own language, they accepted it with familiarity. And then, when the commander ordered that Paul be flogged, Paul talked about his Roman citizenship (verse 25).
Thus, Paul testified of Christ by using all the opportunities, education, and every experience that God had given to him. In fact, when he met Jesus on the Damascus road, Paul confessed “but now I consider them worthless” (Philippians 3:7-8). But this does not mean that he lived a fugitive life and abandoned the world, but rather that the value of his life changed. In other words, the meaning of “abandoned” in the Bible is that I have abandoned what I used for myself. And so it is a confession that all these things are indeed used only for the glory of God and also for the gospel. Therefore, we must also use everything that God have given to us, from head to toe. But this is not so that we use this to boast of ourselves or for our self-interest, but instead to use it for the gospel and the glory of God.
Concluding the sermon: Like Paul, I hope that we can have a consistent grace in our confession of faith and in our confession of life, whether it is in front of people who like us or not. In addition, I hope that you will all become faithful servants who use all the opportunities, education, and experiences 100% well, so that you can manage the mission that God has given to you.
