만일 누가 너희에게 어찌하여 푸느냐 묻거든 말하기를 주가 쓰시겠다 하라 하시매…나귀 새끼를 풀때에 그 임자들이 이르되 어찌하여 나귀 새끼를 푸느냐 대답하되 주께서 쓰시겠다 하고(눅19:31, 33-34)
오늘은 종려 주일입니다. 종려 주일은 사순절 마지막 주간이며 고난 주간의 시작으로 예수님께서 나귀 새끼를 타고 예루살렘에 입성하신 것을 기념하는 주일입니다. 오늘 우리는 온 인류의 구원을 위해 십자가를 지시러 예수님이 예루살렘에 입성하는 모습을 통하여 하나님의 성품과 십자가 질 수 있는 참된 제자의 모습이 무엇인가? 살펴보고자 합니다.
1.순종의 삶: 지금 예수님께서 인류의 구속사를 이루시기 위하여 드디어 예루살렘을 향하여 들어가고 계십니다(28절) 그런데 예루살렘에서 아주 가까이 떨어진 감람 산 산등성이에 위치한 예루살렘이 한눈에 보이는 벳바게와 베다니에 가까이 가셨을 때에 제자 중 둘을 보내시며 나귀 새끼가 매여 있는 것을 보리니 풀어 끌고 오라고 말씀하십니다(29-30) 사실 예수님은 갈릴리에서 예루살렘까지 대략 110km 되는 먼 거리를 걸어서 오셨습니다. 그런데 벳바게와 베다니에서 한 2km 남았습니다. 그냥 계속 걸어서 가시면 바로 예루살렘에 이르게 됩니다.
그런데 예수님 걸어서 들어갈 수 있음에도 불구하고 굳이 어린 나귀 새끼를 타고 들어 가셨습니다. 왜 이렇게 하셨을 까요? 예수님은 스가랴9:9의 “시온의 딸아 크게 기뻐할지어다 예루살렘의 딸아 즐거이 부를찌어다 보라 네 왕이 네게 임하시나니 그는 공의로우시며 구원을 베푸시며 겸손하여서 나귀를 타시나니 나귀의 작은 것 곧 나귀 새끼니라” 라는 말씀을 이루시기 위해서 나귀를 타셨습니다. 예수님은 이 말씀대로 순종하기 위해서 나귀 새끼를 풀어 끌고 오라고 하신 것입니다.
당시 상황은 유월절이 다가오므로 수많은 사람들이 예루살렘에 모일 때입니다. 많은 사람들이 예수님에 대한 기대감을 갖고 있었습니다. 그런데 예수님이 바라보는 것은 사람들의 시선이 아니라 하나님의 말씀이었습니다. 사람들은 예수님이 왕처럼 말을 타고 그것도 백마를 타고 오시기를 기대했지만 예수님은 말씀대로 나귀 새끼를 타고 들어오셨습니다. 왜 그렇습니까? 언제나 하나님 말씀 앞에 순종하는 것이 중요하기 때문입니다. 그래야 십자가 질 수 있고 그래야 승리할 수 있기 때문입니다.
예수님께서 두 제자에게 맞은 편 마을에 가서 매어 있는 나귀 새끼를 풀어 끌고 오라 말씀하시며 만일 왜 푸느냐 물으면 “주께서 쓰시겠다”라고 답하라 하셨습니다. 그랬더니 두 제가가 순종하여 그대로 행하였습니다.(31-35절) 그랬더니 나귀 주인이 “주께서 쓰시겠다”하자 곧장 순종합니다. 우리에게 이 모습이 필요합니다. 아무리 재능이 뛰어나고 많은 것을 갖추었다고 할지라도 까다로운 사람은 하나님께 쓰임 받지 못합니다. 참으로 가진 것이 많습니다. 그런데 한번도 쓰임 받지 못했다 하면 그건 잘못 산 인생입니다. 왜 그렇습니까? “주께서 쓰시겠다” 할 때 불순종했기 때문입니다.
잊지 마십시요 순종할 때 기적이 일어납니다. 가나의 혼인 잔치 집 기적이 언제 일어났습니까? “너희에게 무슨 말씀을 하시든지 그대로 하라”(요2:5) 순종할 때 물이 변하여 포도주가 되는 기적을 맛보게 되었습니다. 우리의 삶 가운데 왜 이런 놀라운 역사가 일어나지 않습니까? 다른 곳에서 원인을 찾지 마십시요. 순종이 없기 때문입니다. 믿음이 없기 때문입니다. 순종할 때 인생이 바뀝니다.
2.겸손의 삶: 왜 예수님은 나귀 새끼를 데려오라고 하셨을까요? 왕이라면 보통 말을 타고 위풍당당하게 행차하는 법입니다. 그런데 예수님은 나귀를 타셨습니다. 어떻게 보면 유치하고 애들 장난 같은 코미디를 하고 있는 것입니다. 그러나 여기에 깊은 영적 진리가 숨겨져 있습니다. 일반적으로 사람들은 자기가 어떤 대접을 받느냐에 따라서 자기를 결정합니다. 그래서 자기가 받아야 할 대접을 받지 못했을 때에 화를 냅니다. 그런데 새끼 나귀를 타신 예수님! 이것이 예수님의 겸손입니다.
그런데 예수님이 그 나귀 새끼 위에 앉으셔야 하는데 안장이 없습니다. 그래서 제자들이 자기들의 옷을 벗어서 나귀의 안장 위에 깔아 드렸습니다. 그랬더니 그 옆에 있던 무리들도 옷을 벗어 다 길에 깔았습니다 그러면서 예수님을 높입니다(35-38절). 이것이 바로 겸손입니다. 진정한 겸손이 무엇입니까? 하나님께 영광을 돌리는 것입니다. 예수님은 이 땅에 오셔서 하신 모든 사역들을 보십시요. 예수님이 행하신 모든 사역들은 자신에게 영광을 돌리는게 없고 최종적으로 하나님께 영광을 돌리는 것이었습니다.
누가복음18: 35-43에 보면 맹인이 눈 뜨는 사건이 나옵니다. 그 때 눈 뚠 맹인의 반응이 무엇입니까? “곧 보게 되어 하나님께 영광을 돌리며 예수를 따르니 백성이 다 이를 보고 하나님을 찬양하니라”(43절) 이게 겸손입니다. 그래서 참된 겸손의 사람이 되려면 우리 삶 가운데 모든 것들에서 내가 사라져야 됩니다. 그리고 하나님께 모든 영광을 돌리는 것! 이것이 겸손입니다. 찬송가 323장 “존귀 영광 모든 권세 주님 홀로 받으소서 멸시 천대 십자가는 제가 지고 가오리다 이름없이 빛도없이 감사하며 섬기리다” 이것이 겸손입니다. 그러면 십자가 질 수 있습니다. 그리고 이것이 참된 제자의 모습입니다. “겸손과 여호와를 경외함의 보상은 재물과 영광과 생명입니다”(잠22:4)
말씀을 마칩니다: 우리의 삶 가운데 순종과 겸손이 있으면 하나님의 은혜와 능력이 임하고 십자가 질 수 있습니다. “주께서 쓰시겠다 하라” 순종으로 많이 쓰임 받는게 최고의 축복이 될 수 있습니다. 존귀 영광은 주님께, 멸시 천대 십자가는 내가 지는 것이 겸손입니다.

Title: “The Lord needs it”

If anyone asks, ‘Why are you untying that colt?’ just say, ‘The Lord needs it.’”… And sure enough, as they were untying it, the owners asked them, “Why are you untying that colt?” And the disciples simply replied, “The Lord needs it.” (Luke 19:31, 33-34 – NLT)
Today is Palm Sunday. Palm Sunday is the last week of Lent, and the beginning of Passion Week. It is a Sunday celebrating the arrival of Jesus on a young donkey in Jerusalem. We will look at what is the true character of God and what it takes to become true disciples of God who can take up the cross, by looking at Jesus who came to Jerusalem to die on the cross in order to bring salvation to all mankind.
1. The life of obedience: In verse 28, Jesus entered Jerusalem to fulfill the redemption of mankind. As Jesus came to the towns of Bethphage and Bethany on the Mount of Olives, He sent two disciples ahead. In fact, Jesus walked a long distance of approximately 110 km from Galilee to Jerusalem. And with only two kilometers left from Bethphage and Bethany, He could have reached Jerusalem, if He just continued walking.
However, even though Jesus could have entered by walking, he entered by riding on a young donkey. Why did he do this? Jesus rode on the young donkey in order to fulfill the words of Zechariah: “Rejoice, O people of Zion! Shout in triumph, O people of Jerusalem! Look, your king is coming to you. He is righteous and victorious, yet He is humble, riding on a donkey— riding on a donkey’s colt.” (Zechariah 9:9). He rode on the donkey to fulfill the Word of God. Jesus told them to untie the donkey and bring it to Him in order to obey God’s Words.
Back at that time, the Passover was approaching and so many people gathered in Jerusalem. Many people had anticipation for Jesus. But Jesus’ eyes were not fixed on the people, but instead on the Word of God. People expected that Jesus would enter Jerusalem riding on a white horse like a king. But Jesus entered in riding on a donkey just as per the Word of God. Why was this so? It is because it is always more important to obey God’s Word. It is in this way that we can take up our cross and can succeed.
Jesus told the two disciples to go into the village ahead of them and told them to untie the colt that was tied there and bring it back. If anyone asked why they were untying the colt, He told to just say that “The Lord needs it.” Then the two disciples obeyed and did just as they were told (verses 31 – 35). Furthermore, when the owner of the donkey also heard that the “The Lord needs it“, he obeyed right away. We too also need to be like this. No matter how talented we may be or how much we may have, God does not use us if we are a difficult and not an easy-going person. There are many things that we do have. But if we have never been used by God, then we have lived a wrong life. Why is this so? It is because we have disobeyed when God said, “The Lord needs it.”
Please do not forget. When you obey, miracles happen. When did the miracle at the wedding feast in Cana happen? In John 2:5, it says, ‘But his mother told the servants, “Do whatever He tells you.” When we obey, we can taste the miracle of the water turning into wine. Why do these wonderful miracles not take place in our lives? Do not try to look for the cause elsewhere. It is because we have not obeyed. It is because we have no faith. When we obey, our lives changes.
2. The life of humility: Why did Jesus ask for the young donkey? If you are a king, you usually ride on a horse. But Jesus came riding on a young donkey. In some ways, this could appear comical or like a childish play. But there are deep spiritual truths are hidden here. Generally, people decide for themselves how they should be treated based on how they think of themselves. So they get angry if they do got get the treatment that they think they deserve. But Jesus entered Jerusalem riding on a donkey despite that he was the Son of God – this is the humility of Jesus.
Jesus had to sit on the colt, but there was no saddle. So the disciples took off their garments and laid them on the colt. Then the crowds beside Him also spread their garments along the road, and praised Jesus (verses 35 – 38). This is humility. What is true humility? It is to glorify God. Look at all the ministries that Jesus did on earth. In all the ministries, he never glorified Himself, but ultimately, He only glorified God.
In Luke 18:35-43 we see the story of the blind man receiving sight. What was the reaction of this blind person receiving sight? “Instantly the man could see, and he followed Jesus praising God. And all who saw it praised God, too. (Luke 18:43). This is humility. Therefore, in order to truly become a humble person, “we” must disappear from everything in our lives. And we must turn all glory to God! This is humility. They lyrics of Hymn 323, verse 3 goes like this: “Honor, glory, power and praise, Lord, to You, You only are due! Shame and scorn and cross You carried. Grant us grace to carry them too. Without name or frame, but, oh Lord, joy and thanks, to serve before You.” Now this is called humility. This is how we can up our cross. This also reflects what a true disciple is. “True humility and fear of the Lord lead to riches, honor, and long life. (Proverbs 22:4)
Concluding the sermon: If there is obedience and humility in our lives, then God’s grace and power will come upon us and we can take up our cross. The greatest blessing can be to be used by God through obedience to, “The Lord needs it.” All honor and glory to God, while shame and scorn is the cross we take up – this is what humility is.
