제목: 제1 계명의 참된 의미

십계명 강해 세 번째 시간입니다. 십계명은 하나님께서 모세를 통해 출애굽한 이스라엘 백성들을 친히 자기 백성 삼으셔서 하나님 나라를 세우시기 위해 주신 삶의 기준, 원칙입니다. 오늘 우리는 이 제1계명의 참된 의미와 이것을 지키기 위해 붙들어야 할 것이 무엇인지 살펴보고자 합니다.
1. 제1계명을 지키려면 하나님에 대해서 알아야 합니다: 십계명의 핵심은 관계입니다. 우리는 누구와 관계를 맺느냐에 따라 반드시 영향을 받게 되어 있습니다. 십계명은 하나님과 이웃과의 사랑의 관계를 다루고 있습니다. 왜냐하면 우리는 관계를 통해서 천국(행복)을 경험할 수 있기 때문입니다. 이처럼 십계명은 우리의 삶의 진정한 행복과 회복을 위해서 주신 참으로 가장 축복된 하나님의 선물입니다. 그래서 우리의 행복의 선명한 원칙과 기준이 되는 이 말씀대로만 살면 틀림없이 하나님이 우리 인생에 놀라운 축복을 주시고 무너지고 망가진 우리의 삶에 모든 것이 회복되는 역사가 일어날 것입니다.
그런데 모든 관계의 기초는 하나님과의 관계입니다. 이 하나님과의 관계가 회복될 때 우리는 모든 일상의 삶에서 놀라운 은혜와 축복을 경험하게 되는 것입니다. 그러나 반면에 하나님과의 관계가 깨어지면 우리의 삶에 치명적인 영향을 받게 되어 있습니다. 그래서 하나님께서 당시 이스라엘 백성들에게 첫 번째로 주신 계명이 무엇입니까? “너는 나 외에는 다른 신들을 네게 두지 말라”(3절) 입니다. 하나님께서는 하나님의 백성이 섬겨야 하고 경배해야 할 대상은 오직 여호와 하나님이심을 제1계명으로 선언하신 것입니다.
이것은 그들에게 하나님 외에 그 어떠한 신도 있어서는 안된다는 의미입니다. 당시 모세가 부르심을 받고 애굽으로 돌아갈 때 두려워했던 것 중의 하나는 어떻게 그들에게 하나님을 소개할 것인가 하는 것이었습니다. 그것은 이미 이스라엘 백성들에게는 수많은 신들이 있었기 때문입니다. 그들에게 하나님이라고 하면 또 다른 하나의 신을 의미할 뿐이었습니다. 그런 애굽 문화에 젖은 그들에게 어떻게 유일하신 인격적인 하나님을 납득이 가도록 설명할 수 있겠습니까? 그러나 하나님께서는 친히 자신의 유일하심을 증거하셨습니다. 열 가지 재앙을 통하여 애굽의 모든 거짓 신들을 징계하셨습니다. 그들의 눈 앞에서 그들의 신들이 패배하는 것을 보게 하셨습니다. 그리고 나서 “너는 나 외에 다른 신을 두지 말라”고 말씀하신 것입니다.
그런데 사실 이 제1계명은 무신론자들이나 또 타 종교의 사람들이 보기에는 굉장히 독선적인 말입니다. 그러나 여러분! 이것은 복음 중의 복음입니다. 그래서 이 제1계명은 십계명뿐만 아니라 성경 전체를 강조하는 핵심적인 주제라 말할 수 있습니다. 성경은 사실 이 한 분 하나님에 대한 이야기 곧 하나님이 하나님이심을 증거하는 책이 성경입니다. 그래서 1계명이 참 중요합니다. 우리가 하나님을 절대적 존재로 인정하지 않으면 그 다음의 계명들은 의미가 없어집니다. 왜요! 믿음의 대상인 하나님이 누구신가를 알지 못하면 우리의 믿음이 자라지 못하기 때문입니다. 그래서 하나님이 누구신가를 분명히 알아야 믿음이 생겨서 그 분의 말씀을 지킬 수가 있는 것입니다.
그러므로 우리는 이 십계명을 대할 때 제일 먼저 하나님에 대한 기본적인 이해가 필요한 것입니다. 여러분! 우리가 우상 숭배에 빠지는 이유가 무엇입니까? 하나님에 대한 무지입니다. 하나님에 대한 참된 지식이 없어서 그런 것입니다. 세상에서 가장 가난하고 못사는 나라의 공통점이 무엇입니까? 하나님에 대한 무지로 말미암아 이 1계명을 어긴 결과가 이렇게 세상을 참혹하게 만들어 놓은 것입니다. 그러므로 우리가 다른 건 몰라도 하나님에 대한 명확한 지식, 이해가 있어야 됩니다. 잊지 마십시요. 하나님에 대한 무지가 삶을 그 개인뿐만 아니라, 그 사회, 그 국가와 그 모든 역사를 다 망가뜨려 놓은 것입니다.
2. 성경에서 말하는 하나님: 오늘날을 종교 다원주의 시대라고 부릅니다. 종교 다원주의 시대란 구원의 길이 하나만 있는 것이 아니라 여럿이 있다는 것입니다. 그 중의 하나가 “십자가의 도”라는 것입니다. 우리가 어떻게 이런 상황에서 십자가의 유일성을 주장할 수 있겠습니까? 이 중대한 질문에 우리가 답을 해야 합니다. 여러분! 우리가 믿는 하나님은 모슬림이 말하는 하나님과 다릅니다. 유대교가 말하는 하나님과 다릅니다. 결정적 차이는 어디서 있는가 하면 “하나님의 아들 예수 그리스도의 십자가를 통한 구원의 길” 그러니까 “오직 구원은 하나님의 아들 예수 그리스도를 통해서만 이루어진다”라고 하는 바로 그 하나님이십니다.
예수님은 그 하나님을 이렇게 말씀하셨습니다. “예수께서 이르시되 내가 곧 길이요 진리요 생명이니 나로 말미암지 않고는 아버지께로 올 자가 없느니라”(요14:6). 여기서 주목할 것은 길, 진리, 생명이라는 단어 앞에 헬라어 원문이나 영어로 정관사 “the” 가 붙어 있다는 것입니다. 정관사 “the”는 “유일하다”는 뜻입니다. 내가 곧 그 길이요, 그 진리요, 그 생명이다 라는 것입니다. “하나 밖에 없다는 것입니다” 그런데 나로 말미암지 않고는 아버지께로 올 자가 없다 할 때 그 아버지가 바로 우리가 믿는 하나님이십니다. 그러니까 우리의 죄를 대신하여 아들을 십자가에 죽게 하신 하나님이 우리가 믿는 하나님이십니다. 왜 하나님만 섬기라고 하십니까? 그것은 이스라엘이 하나님을 떠나는 순간 불행이 찾아오고 그리고 길을 잃고 혼란이 오기 때문입니다. 그래서 오직 하나님만 선택해서 참된 복을 누리라는 것입니다.
말씀을 마칩니다: 일계명의 핵심은 오직 하나님 한 분만을 진심으로 사랑하라고 하는 명령입니다. 왜요! 하나님만이 우리 인생의 참된 길이요 답이 되시기 때문입니다. 우리가 이 하나님을 사랑하는 마음을 놓치는 순간 우리는 세상의 잡다한 것들에 끌려다니게 될 것입니다.

Title: The True Meaning of the First Commandment

“You shall have no other gods before me.” (Exodus 20:3 – NIV)
Today is the third expository sermon of the Ten Commandments. The Ten Commandments are the standards and principles of life that God gave through Moses, to the people of Israel who came out of Egypt, whom He made as His people in order to establish God’s Kingdom. Today we will look at the true meaning of the first commandment and what we need to hold onto in order to keep the first commandment.
1. To keep the first commandment, we need to know about God: The core of the ten commandments is relationship. We will become influenced by whom we have a relationship with. The Ten Commandments deals with the relationship of love between God and our neighbors. This is because we can experience God’s Kingdom (happiness) through relationships. As such, the Ten Commandments are truly the most blessed gift of God for the true happiness and recovery of our lives. Therefore, if we live only by these words, which are the clear principles and standards of our happiness, we will surely see the work of God who will give us amazing blessings and restore everything in our destroyed and broken lives.
However, the basis of all relationships is the relationship with God. When this relationship with God is restored, we will experience the amazing grace and blessings in all parts of our daily lives. On the other hand, if our relationship with God is broken, this will have a critical influence on our lives. So, what was the first commandment that God gave to the Israelites at that time? ‘“You shall have no other gods before me.’ (Verse 3). God declared as the first commandment that God’s people should only serve and worship the Lord our God.
This meant that they have should no other gods other than God. One of the things Moses feared at that time when he received the calling and went back to Egypt, was how to introduce God to the Israelites. This was because the Israelites already had many gods. To them, God only meant another god. How could he explain to them so that they understood the One and only God, the personal God, since they were soaked in the Egyptian culture? However, God Himself proved to them that He was the One and only God. Through the ten plagues, God punished all the false gods of Egypt. He made the Israelites see their gods defeated before their eyes. Then God said, “You must have no other gods besides me.”
In fact, the first commandment may be viewed as very egotistic to atheists and the people of other religions. But everyone! This is really the good news of the gospel. Therefore, it can be said that the first commandment is a key theme that is emphasized not only in the Ten Commandments, but in the whole Bible. In fact, the Bible is a book that tells about the One God, that God is God. That is why the first commandment is very important. If we do not recognize God as the Absolute Being, the next commandments become meaningless. Why is this so? This is because our faith cannot grow unless we know who God is, the object of our faith. That is why we need to know who God clearly is, so that our faith can grow, and we can keep His Word.
Therefore, when dealing with the Ten Commandments, we first need a basic understanding of God. Everyone! Why do we fall into idolatry? It is because of ignorance of God. It is because we do not have a true knowledge of God. What do the world’s poorest countries have in common? It is their ignorance of God, resulting in the violation of the first commandment and thus, they have made the world terrible. Therefore, we need to have a definite knowledge and understanding of God, even if we do not know anything else. Please do not forget. The ignorance of God has destroyed the life of not only the individual, but the society, the nation, and all the history.
2. God in the Bible: Today is called the era of religious pluralism, which is a philosophy of post-modernism. The era of religious pluralism says that there is not only one way of salvation, but several. One of them is, “the way of the cross”. How can we claim the One and only Cross in this situation? We must answer this critical question. Everyone! The God we believe is different from the god of the Muslims. God is different from the God of Judaism. Where is the crucial difference? It is in this: “the way of salvation is through the cross of Jesus Christ, the Son of God.” So, it is the very God who says, “Salvation is only through Jesus Christ, the Son of God.“
Jesus says of God like this, ‘Jesus answered, “I am the way and the truth and the life. No one comes to the Father except through Me.”’ (John 14:6). What is important to note here is the definite article, “the”, (in the original Greek language and English), that comes before the words, way, truth, and life. The definite article, “the” means, “only”. It means that Jesus Christ is the way, the truth and the life. It means that, “there is only One”. When Jesus says that there is no one who can come to the Father except through Him – that Father is the God we believe in. Therefore, the God who gave us His Son to die on the cross for our sins, is the God we believe. Why does God tell us to only serve Him? It is because the moment Israel would leave God, unhappiness and chaos would result. Therefore, we can enjoy true blessings by choosing only God.
Concluding the sermon: At the heart of the first commandment is the command to truly love the One and only God. Why is this so? It is because only God is the true way and the answer to our lives. The moment we miss this heart of loving God, we will be drawn to the various things of the world.
