제목: 신자에서 멈추지 말고 제자가 되라

이 바울이 에베소뿐 아니라 거의 전 아시아를 통하여 수많은 사람을 권유하여 말하되 사람의 손으로 만든 것들은 신이 아니라 하니 이는 이는 그대들도 보고 들은 것이라 우리의 이 영업이 천하여질 위험이 있을 뿐 아니라…(행19:26-27)
사도행전 강해 73번째 시간입니다. 오늘 본문은 사도 바울이 에베소에서 2년 간의 두란노 서원을 통해 성공적인 전도 사역을 수행하고 있을 무렵에 발생한 소요 사건을 기록하고 있습니다. 오늘 우리는 이 소요 사건에 일어난 원인을 통하여 성경이 주는 중요한 가르침을 살펴 보고자 합니다.
1. 말씀이 일을 합니다: 사도 바울이 에베소에서 두란노 서원을 세워 제자들을 말씀으로 2년 간을 날마다 가르쳤습니다. 그랬더니 바울을 통해 제자 훈련을 받은 사람들을 인하여 에베소 도시 전체의 뿌리를 흔들 만큼 큰 변화의 역사가 나타났습니다. 본문 23절에 보면 바울의 복음 사역으로 인해 큰 소동이 일어났습니다.(24절) 그 소동은 데메드리오 라고 하는 한 은장색(silversmith) 곧 은세공업자 때문에 일어난 소동이었습니다. 이 사람은 아데미라고 하는 우상을 만드는 사람이었는데 바울이 전한 복음 때문에 큰 경제적인 손실을 입었을 뿐만 아니라 자신들의 직업도 천하게 여김 받게 될 위험에 처했습니다.(25-27절)
그러다보니까 이 데메드리오 라는 사람을 중심으로 큰 소요가 일어난 것입니다.(28절) 얼마나 큰 소동이 일어났는가 하면 본문 29절에 보면 그 소요에 참여한 사람들이 바울과 같이 사역하던 가이오와 아리스다고를 잡아 연극장에 들어 갔는데, 그 연극장의 크기가 한 2만 5천 명이 들어간다는 아주 큰 극장입니다. 거기에 사람이 꽉 찰 정도로 온 성이 요란하며 큰 소동이 일어난 것입니다.
왜 이런 일이 일어났습니까? 바울을 통해 말씀으로 제자 훈련을 받은 이 소수의 사람들로 인하여 에베소 도시 전체의 큰 수입원이었던 은으로 만든 우상이 안 팔리는 놀라운 변화의 역사가 일어났기 때문입니다. 이 사건을 통해 하나님이 우리에게 주시는 메시지가 무엇입니까? 진짜 하나님의 말씀이 선포되고 말씀으로 제자 훈련시키면 사람들이 변화가 된다 라는 것입니다. 그래서 사실 어떤 면에서는 이 행19장에 나오는 이런 소동과 소요가 막 일어나야 우리의 신앙이 건강한 것입니다.
생각해 보십시요 우리가 신앙 생활하면서 “저 예수 믿는 사람들 때문에, 교회 때문에 이제는 장사 못해 먹겠다, 이제 우린 다 망했다”라고 시위하는 뉴스나 시위 운동하는 것을 본 적도 들은 적도 없지 않습니까? 그와는 반대로 “교회에도 세금을 부과하라, 교회 똑바로 해라” 하는 이런 여론이 조성되어 가는 것을 통해 얼굴을 들 수가 없습니다. 잊지 마십시요. 진짜 복음이 증거되면 사람들이 변화가 된다 라는 것을 믿으셔야 합니다. 왜요! 말씀에 생명이 있어 말씀이 일하기 때문입니다. “이와 같이 주의 말씀이 힘이 있어 흥왕하여 세력을 얻으니라”(20절)
2.말씀 훈련을 통해 제자가 되어야 합니다: 사실 당시 실제 상황은 대단히 심각해서 바울을 비롯하여 예수 믿는 사람들은 이제 다 죽었구나, 그리고 교회는 문을 닫아야 할 것 같은 그런 상황입니다. 그런데 그런 상황에서 에베소 교회 성도들이 얼마나 침착하게 대처하고 감정에 따라 반응하지 않고 하나님의 역사를 기다리는지, 바울이 가이오와 아리스다고가 자신을 대신하여 극장에 끌려 들어갈 때 바울이 마음이 너무 아파서 자기가 뛰어 가서 그들을 살리고 변론하고 싶어 했습니다.(29-31절)
그랬더니 이 엄청난 난동이 벌어질 것 같은 소동이 의외로 쉽게 사그라 들고 맙니다. 한참을 소리지르고 떠들던 사람들이 서기장이 지혜롭게 이 소요의 불법성을 지적하며 처벌 받을 수 있다고 경고하지 다 흩어지고 만 것입니다.(35-41절) 그런데 이 에베소 교회 성도들이 이 소요를 두려움이나 염려로 반응하지 않고 침착하게 대응한 것은 바로 말씀으로 훈련 받은 결과인 것입니다. 그래서 말씀 훈련이 중요한 것입니다. 말씀으로 훈련 받은 제자들에게서 나타나는 공통적이 특징은 삶의 변화가 나타나는 것입니다.
그러므로 말씀 훈련을 꼭 받으셔야 합니다. 교회의 사명은 영혼 구원에서 멈추어서는 안됩니다. 영혼 구원과 더불어 제자를 만드는 것이 교회의 중요한 사명입니다.(마28:19-20) 예수 영접하여 죄사함 받고 구원 받는 것에서 멈추면 이 땅에서는 하나님의 나라를 경험하기가 쉽지 않습니다. 죽어서만 가는 천국이 되어서는 안됩니다. 이 땅에서도 하나님의 나라를 경험하기 위해서는 말씀을 통해 날마다 새로와 져야 합니다. 우리 주님은 우리 모두가 신자가 될 뿐만 아니라 제자가 되기를 원하십니다.
목회하면서 깨닫는 것은 교회를 힘들게 하고 문제를 만드는 사람은 초신자가 아니라 교회에서 열심 있는 성도들이 시험을 일으킨다 라는 것입니다. 말씀을 모르기 때문에 영적 분별력이 없어 하나님의 뜻을 분별하지 못해 내 생각, 내 열심만 가지고 나가기 때문에 늘 자기 생각이 앞서서 문제를 만드는 것입니다. 그러므로 언제나 말씀의 사람이 되어서 인생의 답을 말씀을 통해 얻어야 합니다. 아무리 옳은 일 같아도 말씀으로 답을 얻기 전에는 속단하지 말아야 합니다. 그리고 막연하게 말씀이 임하기를 기다리지 말고 말씀 훈련을 받아야 합니다.
말씀을 마칩니다: 오늘날 교회에 사람이 없어서 세상이 변하지 않는 것이 아니라 말씀으로 헌신된 제자가 없기 때문에 세상이 변하지 않는 것입니다. 그러므로 진정 말씀의 사람이 되어 우리로 인하여 내 주변에 거룩한 소요를 일으켜서 영향을 줄 수 있는 믿음의 종들이 다 되시기를 바랍니다.

But as you have seen and heard, this man Paul has persuaded many people that handmade gods aren’t really gods at all. And he’s done this not only here in Ephesus but throughout the entire province! Of course, I’m not just talking about the loss of public respect for our business…” (Acts 19:26-27 – NLT)
Today is the 73rd series of the Book of Acts. Today’s scriptures records the events that occurred during Apostle Paul’s successful evangelism ministry in Ephesus through the daily discussions that took place in the lecture hall of Tyrannus for two years. Today we will look at the important teachings of the Bible by looking at the causes of this disturbance that arose.
1. The Word of God does the work: Apostle Paul taught the disciples daily for two years with the Word of God at the lecture hall of Tyrannus in Ephesus. As a result, a great work of change happened that shook the roots of the entire city of Ephesus through those people who had received discipleship training from Paul. In verse 23, there was a great uproar that arose due to Paul’s gospel ministry. (Verse 24) The disturbance was started by a silversmith named Demetrius. This man made the idol called Artemis. But because of the gospel preached by Paul, not only did he and the craftsmen suffered great economic losses, but they also faced the risk of losing the good name for their trade and losing public respect for their business (verses 25-27).
As a result, this significant uproar arose just because of this one person named Demetrius (verse 28). The riot was so vast that in verse 29, it states that the people who participated in the riot seized Gaius and Aristarchus, Paul’s traveling companions, and rushed into a theatre which was the size of a theatre that could fit 25,000 people. There was so much turmoil in the whole city to the extent that the theatre was filled with people and a riot happened.
Why did this happen? It is because there was a great work of change in the city since the silversmiths of Ephesus who made idols were not able sell them after people received discipleship training through the Word of God that Paul preached. What is God’s message for us through this event? It is that if the Word of God is proclaimed and disciples are trained by the Word of God, then people will become changed. Therefore, if you look at this in another way, these riots and turmoil that happened in Acts 19 must happen in order for us to have a healthy faith.
Let’s think about it. It is not like we have never seen or heard of demonstration news where people protest by saying, “We cannot longer do business because of those people who believe in Jesus and the church! We are doomed!” On the contrary, I cannot lift my face of this kind of public opinion that states, “Impose taxes on the church! A church must run properly!” Please do not forget. We must believe that if the gospel is preached, then people will become changed. Why is this so? It is because there is life in the Word of God and therefore, the Word of God works. “So the message about the Lord spread widely and had a powerful effect” (verse 20).
2. Be disciples through training of the Word of God: The actual situation was so serious that Paul and all those who believed in Jesus could have all been killed and the church door could have been closed. But even in such a situation, the saints of the Ephesus Church reacted and overcame calmly instead of reacting based on their emotions. They waited for God to work. Paul even wanted to go back and rescue and plead for his companions, Gaius and Aristarchus, because he was hurt at the fact that they were seized instead of him (verses 29 to 31).
So this riot that could have gone very bad, surprisingly ended in a calm way. The assembly got dismissed by the city clerk who wisely quieted the crowd by telling them of the illegality of the riot and that they were actually in danger of being charged with rioting because of that day’s events (verses 35-31). The reason why the saints of the Ephesus church were able to calmly respond to this matter was because they were trained by the Word of God. So that is why receiving training in the Word of God is important. A common characteristic of the people who received discipleship training through the Word of God is that they showed changes in their lives.
Likewise, you must also receive training in the Word of God. The mission of the church should not stop at just in the salvation of souls. The important mission of the church is the salvation of souls together with making disciples (Matthew 28:19-20). It is not easy to experience the Kingdom of God on this earth if we just stop at the point of accepting Jesus, receiving forgiveness of sins and receiving salvation. We should not make heaven just a place where we go after we die. In order to experience the Kingdom of God here on this earth, we must become new and changed every day through the Word of God. Our Lord wants us not only to be believers, but also to become disciples.
I have realized throughout the ministry that it is not the new people or believers who cause difficultly for the church, but rather the dedicated saints in the church that cause trials. Since we do not know the Word of God, we are not able to discern the will of God because we do not have spiritual discernment. We only focus on our efforts and as a result we put our thoughts first which creates problems. Therefore, we must always be people of the Word of God and obtain the answers to life through the Word of God. No matter how right we think it is, we should not quickly or easily judge until we first find the answer through the Word of God. And we should not just vaguely wait for the Word of God to come, but instead we must actually receive training in the Word of God.
Concluding the sermon: It is not because there is no people at the church that the world is not changing, but because there are no disciples devoted to the Word of God. Therefore, I hope that you will become people of the Word of God and become servants of faith who can bring about holy riot to those around you and influence them.
