제목: 성탄의 축복을 누리는 자

헤롯 왕 때에 예수께서 유대 베들레헴에서 나시매 동방으로부터 박사들이 예루살렘에 이르러 말하되 유대인의 왕으로 나신 이가 어디 계시냐 우리가 동방에서 그의 별을 보고 그에게 경배하러 왔노라 하니(마2:1-2)
오늘은 성탄절 주일입니다. 우리 죄를 사하시고 구원하시기 위해서 오신 예수님의 탄생을 기뻐하며 기념하는 날입니다. 오늘 우리는 메시아 탄생의 소식을 듣고 반응하는 사람들의 모습과 동방 박사가 온 인류의 구주가 되시는 아기 예수의 탄생을 맞이할 수 있었던 그 놀라운 복을 누릴 수 있었던 길이 무엇인가? 살펴보고자 합니다.
1.예수 탄생에 대한 헤롯과 유대인들의 반응: 본문 1-2절을 보면 동방 박사들이 유대 예루살렘에 도착하여 유대인의 왕으로 나신 이가 어디 계시냐 묻습니다. 그리고 “우리가 동방으로부터 그의 별을 보고 그에게 경배하러 왔다”말합니다. 원래 성탄을 뜻하는 “크리스마스”라고 하는 단어가 바로 여기에서 나왔습니다. 크리스마스란 단어는 두 단어의 합성어입니다. Christ 곧 “그리스도” 라는 단어와 “경배하다, 예배하다”라는 mas 라는 단어가 크리스마스입니다. 그러니까 그리스도 곧 구세주로 오신 예수 그분께 경배하고 그 분께 예배한다 라는 단어가 바로 크리스마스입니다.
동방 박사들이 예루살렘 성으로 간 것은 그들이 생각할 때 유대인의 왕으로 오신 분이니까 당연히 왕궁에 있겠지 하는 생각으로 찾아간 것인데 이것은 박사들의 큰 실수였습니다. 이 일로 인해 “우리가 동방에서 그의 별을 보고 그에게 경배하러 왔노라 하니”고 기록하고 있습니다 (3절) 왜 소동했습니까? 헤롯 왕이 생각할 때 내가 유대인의 왕인데 누가 또 이 유대인의 왕으로 오셨다는 것인가 하며 이는 음모나 반역이라고 생각한 것입니다.
그래서 헤롯이 당시 율법의 전문가들인 대제사장들과 서기관들을 불러 그리스도가 어디서 나겠느냐 묻습니다(4절) 그들은 종교 지도자들이요 특별히 서기관 들은 바리세파에 속한 사람들로 성경을 깊이 연구하고 말씀을 붙잡고 사는 열심이 있는 엘리트 계층이었습니다. 그래서 물으니까 그들이 거침없이 구약 성경 미가서5:2의 말씀을 인용하여 대답합니다(5-6절)
그러자 헤롯 왕이 이 자문을 받고 박사들을 불러 자기 마음을 감추면서 메시아를 찾으면 자기한테도 꼭 알려 주어 자기도 가서 경배하게 해달라고 말합니다.(7-8절) 이처럼 헤롯은 마치 예수의 나심을 축하하는 것처럼 위장하여 말합니다. 오늘 날도 헤롯같이 겉으로는 환영하나 속으로는 저주하고 적의에 찬 태도를 보이는 사람들이 얼마나 많은 지 모릅니다.
2.동방 박사가 받은 축복의 근원: 반면에 동방 박사들은 메시야의 탄생을 기다리며 먼 여행을 할 때 그들은 별을 보고 찾아왔습니다. 그들은 유대인이 아니었기 때문에 명시적인 말씀들은 없었습니다. 만약에 그들에게 대제사장이나 서기관들이 갖고 있었던 구약 성경의 기록된 말씀이나 그 말씀에 대한 거룩한 지식을 가지고 있었다면 박사들은 예루살렘을 거치지 않고 바로 베들레헴으로 갔을 것입니다.
이처럼 그들은 말씀에 대한 지식은 없었으나 그 먼 여행을 하면서 제일 중요한 것 하나를 놓치지 않았습니다. “별” 별은 놓치지 않았습니다. 그들은 별을 보고 하나님의 싸인을 읽었습니다. 그런데 잘 보십시요. 대제사장 무리와 서기관들은 명시적인 분명한 진리의 말씀, 기록된 거룩한 하나님의 말씀을 알고 있었습니다. 그러나 박사들은 하늘의 별, 단지 하나님의 싸인, 징조에 불과한 일반 계시, 자연 계시를 통해 유대 땅까지 왔습니다.
그런데 누가 아기 예수님께 나가 경배하였습니까? 하나님 말씀에 정통하고 말씀에 대해 전문가들이었던 유대 종교 지도자들이 아니었다는 것입니다. 사실 그들은 메시아가 태어날 곳을 정확하게 분석할 줄 알았고, 정확한 지식을 가지고 있었습니다. 그러나 그들은 그 말씀에 대한 순종은 없었습니다. 그들은 박사들로부터 메시야 탄생의 소식을 들었을 때 명백한 말씀의 지식을 가지고 있었으므로 그들 중 몇 사람이라도 박사들을 따라 나서거나 그들 스스로 찾아 나섰어야 했습니다. 그러나 그들은 그 말씀 앞에 자기의 삶을 헌신하지 않았고 말씀이 단지 지식뿐이었습니다.
누가 우리 가운데 가장 복받은 그리스도인 입니까? 그것은 기록된 말씀을 가지고 그 말씀에 자기의 삶을 헌신하는 사람입니다. 우리가 동방 박사들에게서 배울 것이 무엇입니까? 순종하는 모습, 행동하는 신앙, 실천하는 신앙이 있어야 한다 라는 것입니다. 대제사장, 서기관들과 동방 박사들의 차이가 무엇입니까? 종교 지도자들은 하나님 말씀에 대해 정통했습니다. 반면에 동방 박사 들은 지푸라기 같은 “별빛”보고 찾아왔습니다. 잊지 마십시요. 우리의 문제는 정답은 아는데 순종이 없다는 것입니다. 순종할 때, 대가를 치를 때 하나님의 영광이 나타나고 생명의 주님을 만나는 축복 된 삶이 될 것입니다.
말씀을 마칩니다: 거룩하고 복된 성탄 주일 동방 박사와 같이 우리의 생명의 주가 되시는 주님 만나기 위해서는 순종과 헌신이 있어야 풍성한 열매를 맺고 하나님 앞에 귀하게 쓰임 받는다 라는 사실을 꼭 기억하시기 바랍니다.
Those Who Enjoy the Blessings of the Birth of Christ

Title: Those Who Enjoy the Blessings of the Birth of Christ

‘Jesus was born in Bethlehem in Judea, during the reign of King Herod. About that time some wise men from eastern lands arrived in Jerusalem, asking, “Where is the newborn king of the Jews? We saw his star as it rose, and we have come to worship him.”’ (Matthew 2:1-2 – NLT)
Today is Christmas Sunday. It is a day to rejoice and celebrate the birth of Jesus who came to forgive our sins and save us. Today, we will take a look at the people who heard and responded to the news of the Messiah’s birth and the wonderful blessings that the wise men were able to enjoy as a result of receiving the birth of baby Jesus, the Savior of all mankind.
1. Herod and the Jews’ response to the birth of Jesus: In verses 1 to 2, we see that the Magi arrived in Jerusalem and asked where the newborn king of the Jews was. They said, “We saw his star as it rose, and we have come to worship him.” The word “Christmas”, originally meaning Christmas, came from here. The word Christmas is a compound word of two words. The word “Christ” is for “Jesus Christ” and the word “mas” is for “worship”. Therefore, the word Christmas is to worship Christ, Jesus, who came as the Savior.
The wise men went to the city of Jerusalem because they thought that since Jesus came as the king of the Jews, He would be found at the palace. It is written that “King Herod was deeply disturbed when he heard this, as was everyone in Jerusalem.” (Verse 3). Why were they disturbed? It was because king Herod thought that he was the king of the Jews, and so he thought that there was a rebellion or a dark plot when he heard that there was another king of the Jews.
As such, Herod called the leading priests and teachers of the law who were experts in the law at that time to ask where Christ would be born (verse 4). They were religious leaders. The teachers of the law, in particular, were members of the Pharisees who were zealous elites and who had studied the Bible and held on to the Word. So when they were asked by Herod, they replied by quoting from the Old Testament of Micah 5:2 (verses 5 to 6).
When Herod received this advice, he called for the Magi and while hiding the true intention of his heart, he told them to search carefully for the child and when they found him, to come back to tell him so that he could go and worship Him too. Similarly, today, there are many people like Herod, who outwardly welcome Jesus, but inwardly they curse and are hostile to Him.
2. The source of blessings of the Magi: On the other hand, the Magi came to see the stars as they traveled from afar waiting for the birth of the Messiah. But since they were not Jews, they had no explicit or clear words like them. If they had the written words of the Old Testament or holy knowledge like the leading priests and the teachers of the law did, they would have gone directly to Bethlehem without going through Jerusalem.
Thus, although they had no knowledge of the Word, but they did not miss one of the most important things in their long journey. They did not miss the “star”. They saw the stars and read the signs of God. But let’s look here carefully. The leading priests and the teachers of the law knew the explicit and clear Word of truth, the written divine Word of God. But the Magi came to the land of Judea through the stars of heaven, the sign of God, the general revelation of signs, and natural revelation.
But who went to worship Jesus? It was not the Jewish religious leaders who were familiar with the Word of God and who were experts of it. In fact, they knew exactly where the Messiah would be born and had an exact analysis and had accurate knowledge. But they did not have obedience of the Word of God. When they heard the news of the Messiah’s birth from the Magi, they had a clear knowledge of the Word, so they should have followed the Magi or find Jesus themselves, but they did not. They did not devote their lives before the Word and the Word was only knowledge to them.
Who is the most blessed Christian among us? It is the person who takes the Word of God and devotes his life to it. What is it that we must learn from the Magi? It is to be obedient and to have faith in action. What was the difference between the Magi and the leading priests and the teachers of the law? Religious leaders were familiar with the Word of God. The wise men, on the other hand, came to see the stubble-like “starlight”. Please do not forget. Our problem is that we know the answer, but there is no obedience. When we obey and when we pay the price, God’s glory will be revealed and we will be able to live a blessed life receiving the Lord of life.
Concluding the sermon: Please remember that in order to meet the Lord, who is the Lord of our lives, like the Magi did on this Holy and blessed Christmas Sunday, we must be obedient and devoted in order to produce abundant fruit and to be used preciously before God.
