제목: 삶이 변하지 않는 이유

대제사장들과 유대인 중 높은 사람들이 바울을 고소할새 베스도의 호의로 바울을 예루살렘으로 옮기기를 청하니 이는 길에 매복하였다가 그를 죽이고자 함이더라…베스도가 유대인의 마음을 얻고자 하여 바울더러 묻되…(행25:2-3, 9)
사도행전 강해 86번째 시간입니다. 오늘 본문에는 바울이 벨릭스의 후임으로 온 베스도 총독에게 다시 재판을 받게 되는 배경과 재판 받는 장면이 소개되고 있습니다. 바울을 다시 고소하는 대제사장들과 장로들의 모습을 통해서 생각과 삶이 변하지 않는 이유와 재판 결과를 통해 말씀의 소중함을 다시한번 깊이 깨닫는 시간이 되시기를 바랍니다.
1. 생각과 삶이 변하지 않는 이유: 오늘 본문 1절에 보면 벨릭스에서 베스도로 총독이 교체가 되었습니다. 그런데 베스도는 부임한지 3일 만에 가장 먼저 예루살렘을 방문했습니다. 본문에서 “삼 일 후”는 삼일 째를 가리키는 유대인식 표현입니다. 유대인들의 날짜 계산법에 따르면 신임 총독 베스도가 가이사랴에 도착한 날이 첫째 날이고, 이튿날은 둘째 날이고, 그리고 그 다음 날이 삼일 째가 됩니다. 그러니까 가이사랴에 도착한 신임 총독 베스도가 단 하루 만 쉬고 곧장 예루살렘 현지 시찰에 나선 것입니다.
로마로부터 가이사랴까지는 2,240km입니다. 당시의 교통 수단인 배로 최소한 열흘 이상 걸리는 항해 거리였습니다. 그 먼거리를 지중해를 횡단해서 가이사랴에 도착한 것입니다. 그런데도 베스도는 도착하고 그 다음날 단 한 하루만 쉬고 곧장 가이사랴에서 104km 떨어져 있는 예루살렘 현지 시찰에 나섰습니다. 그 정도로 베스도는 꽤 신실한 총독이었습니다. 베스도 총독이 예루살렘을 방문한 목적 가운데 하나는 예루살렘 유력자들과 상견례를 갖는 것이었습니다.
그랬더니 2절에 보니까 예루살렘의 대제사장들과 유대인 중 높은 사람들 곧 산헤드린 공회원들이나 유대인 중 지도급 인사들이 마치 기다렸다 라는 듯이 총독에게 바울을 고소합니다. 그리고 그들은 바울을 예루살렘으로 보내줄 것을 요청합니다.(3절) 그런데 이 3절의 “청하니”라는 헬라어 원문을 그대로 해석하면 “악착같이 달려들어 반복해서 행하는 행동으로 베스도에게 집요하게 간청”하는 의미를 내포하고 하고 있습니다. 그런데 그 이유가 너무 끔찍합니다. 그것은 바울을 호송하는 도중에 길에서 암살하기 위함이었습니다.
그런데 지금 행24장과 25장 사이에는 2년이라는 세월이 있습니다. 그런데도 여전히 바울에 대한 적대감이 동일함을 보게 됩니다. 참 지독하지 않습니까? 총독이 새로 부임하자 마자 또 바울의 고소 사건부터 시작합니다. 난리 법석을 떤 것이 2년이 지났는데 그러면 좀 수그러들만도 한데…그런데 2년이 지난 지금도 똑같이 사도 바울을 죽이려고 하는 모습을 볼 수 있습니다. 그들은 유대 사회 최상류 계층에 속한 사람들입니다. 그런데 우리를 놀랍게 하는 것은 그들은 유대 사회에서 가장 하나님을 잘 섬긴다는 최고의 종교 지도자들이었다라는 것입니다.그들은 당시 예루살렘 성전에서 매일 각종 제사를 드리는 사람들입니다. 그런데 하나님께 제사를 드리는 사람들이 지난 2년 동안 수없이 제사를 드렸음에도 불구하고 그들의 생각과 삶에는 아무런 변화가 없었다는 것입니다. 그들은 여전히 2년 전과 똑같이 의로운 바울을 증오하고 고발하고 죽이려 했습니다. 우리가 잊어서는 안될 것은 지금 바울을 죽이려고 하는 자들이 시중 잡배들이나 조폭들이 아니라 하나님을 섬기고 하나님께 제사드리는 유대 사회의 가장 하나님을 잘 섬긴다는 종교 지도자들이었다는 것입니다.
이것이 혹 우리의 모습은 아닌가? 이 시간 자신을 돌아 보시기 바랍니다. 우리도 지난 2년 동안에 주일 예배만 드렸다해도 최소 백 번 이상 예배를 드린 셈이 됩니다. 그런데 그 수많은 예배가 우리에게 무슨 변화를 가져다 주었습니까? 당시의 종교 지도자들과 같이 우리도 여전히 미워하던 사람을 미워하고, 불의한 삶의 방식을 지금도 계속 답습하고, 여전히 누군가를 헤치는 일을 서슴치 않고 반복하고 있는 것은 아닌가? 살펴보시기 바랍니다. 그렇다면 그런 예배를 2년이 아니라 20년을 더 드린다 할지라도 우리의 예배는 하나님과 관계가 없을 것이며 우리의 영적 성장과 성숙에 아무런 유익이 없을 것입니다.
구약 성경 레위기는 제사 즉 예배의 책입니다. 예배의 형태와 방법은 바뀌었지만 예배의 정신은 동일합니다. 예배에 드리는 제물은 반드시 흠없는 제물을 드려야 합니다. 그러기 위해서는 반드시 자신이 바치는 제물에 흠이 있는지 없는지 먼저 살펴야만 합니다. 이처럼 예배는 준비된 마음으로 드려야 합니다. 그리고 예배는 반드시 회개로부터 시작해야 합니다. 회개 없는 예배는 무당의 굿판과 다르지 않습니다. 그리고 선포되는 말씀 앞에 자신을 철저히 죽이는 자기 부인의 시간이 되어야 비로서 우리는 하나님의 생명과 사랑과 능력으로 충만하게 되어 우리의 삶과 생각이 변화되어 하나님을 힘입어 살게 되는 것입니다. 그래야 세상을 살리는 역사가 나타나는 것입니다.
2. 미래는 하나님의 말씀대로 됨을 확신해야 됩니다: 본문 4-5절을 보면 베스도는 이런 음모를 알지 못하였지만, 일단 가이사랴로 갈테니 와서 고소하라고 정중히 거절을 합니다. 6절 이하에 보면 8-10일이 지난 후, 가이사랴로 돌아간 베스도는 그 이튿날 바울에 대한 재판을 열었지만 문제는 바울에게 죄기 없기 때문에 그들이 아무리 걸고 넘어질려고 해도 넘어질 수가 없습니다. 그래서 베스도가 고민에 빠지게 되고 결국 베스도는 바울에게 “네가 예루살렘으로 갈 수 없겠느냐?”(9절) 그러나 단호하게 바울은 거절합니다. 결국 딜레마에 빠진 베스도는 “네가 가이사에게 네 재판을 상소하였으니 가이사에게 갈것이라”(12절) 하면서 재판이 끝납니다. 여기서 우리는 왜! 베스도가 결국 정치적인 큰 부담과 위험을 안고 이런 결정을 했느냐는 질문을 갖게 됩니다. 이유가 무엇입니까? 그것은 주님께서 말씀하셨기 때문입니다.(행23:11) 여기에서 우리는 하나님이 주시는 소중한 교훈을 발견할 수가 있습니다. 그것은 “미래는 반드시 하나님의 말씀대로 됨을 확신해야 된다”는 것입니다. 잊지 마십시요. 하나님의 말씀대로 세상은 움직입니다. 그래서 우리가 하나님의 말씀대로 살면 미래가 보입니다. 말씀에 미래를 거는 종들이 되시기 바랍니다.
말씀을 마칩니다: 살아 있는 예배는 참된 삶의 출발입니다. 예배가 살아야 우리가 삽니다. 무의미하고 습관적인 종교 생활에서 벗어나십시요. 그리고 우리의 이성과 말씀이 충돌할 때 말씀 붙들고 말씀에 인생을 거십시요. 그러면 승리할 수 있습니다.

Title: The Reason Why our Lives Are Not Changed

“where the leading priests and other Jewish leaders met with him and made their accusations against Paul. They asked Festus as a favor to transfer Paul to Jerusalem (planning to ambush and kill him on the way).” (Acts 25:2-3, 9 – NLT)
Today is the 86th series of the Book of Acts. The background of today’s scriptures is about Paul who stood in trial again, but this time before Festus who succeeded Felix as the governor. Through the chief priests and elders who accused Paul again, we will look at the reason why our thoughts and lives do not become changed. In addition, through the result of the trial, I hope that you will be able to once again realize the importance of the Word of God.
1. The reason why our thoughts and lives do not change: In verse 1 of today’s scriptures, Festus replaced Felix as the governor. However, Festus first visited Jerusalem only within three days after he was appointed. In the scriptures, “three days after” is the Jewish expression for referring to the third day. According to the Jewish date calculation, the day when the new governor Festus arrived to Caesarea was the first day, the second day was the second day, and the next day was the third day. Therefore, the new governor, Festus, who arrived in Caesarea, only rested for a day before heading off to Jerusalem.
The distance from Rome to Caesarea was 2,240 km. The only means of transportation back in those days to travel such a distance was through sailing, and would have at least taken ten days. So he arrived at Caesarea by traveling such a far distance and by crossing the Mediterranean. Nevertheless, after Festus arrived, he only took a day off the next day to rest before heading off to Jerusalem, which was 104 km apart from Caesarea. To that extent, Festus was a very faithful governor. One of the purposes of the visit of Festus’ visit to Jerusalem was to have meetings with the Jewish leaders of Jerusalem.
Then as per verse 2, the chief priests, Jewish leaders, members of the Sanhedrin, and leaders of the Jews accused Paul in front of Festus, as if they were waiting for this moment. They also urgently requested Festus to have Paul transferred to Jerusalem (verse 3). But if we translate the word, “requested” in verse 3 into the original Greek word, it implies “through continuous and repetitive action, persistently pleading to Festus”. But the reason for this is so scary. It was because the Jews prepared an ambush to kill Paul along the way on the road while he was getting transferred.
Now, there was a period of two years that elapsed between chapters 24 and 25. But despite this, they had the same hostility towards Paul. Is this not ridiculous? As soon as the governor was newly appointed, they began their accusation against Paul. It had been two years since they caused such trouble and we would have assumed they would have settled down, but two years later, we see that they still wanted to try to kill apostle Paul. They were people of the uppermost class of the Jewish society. But what amazes us is that they were the greatest religious leaders who best served God in the Jewish society. They were people who offered several sacrifices every day at the Jerusalem sanctuary. However, despite that they offered numerous sacrifices to God in the past two years, there were no changes to their thoughts and lives. They still hated, accused and wanted to try to kill Paul who had done nothing wrong, just as they did two years ago. What we should not forget is that those people who were trying to kill Paul were not mobsters or gangsters, but religious leaders who served God the most and offered sacrifices in the Jewish community.
Is this also perhaps representative of us? Let’s take the time to reflect ourselves. By worshipping every Sunday service for the past two years, we would have worshiped at least a hundred times. But what changes have been made in us by the so many worship services? Like the religious leaders of the time, are we still hating those who still hate, continuing to follow the way of life that is unrighteous, and still repetitively hurting someone? Please take a look. If so, even if we were to offer such worship for 20 years, not two years, our worship will have nothing to do with God, and there will be no benefit to our spiritual growth and maturity.
The Book of Leviticus in the Old Testament is a sacrament or worship book. The form and method of worship have changed, but the spirit of worship is the same. The offerings for worship must be offered without any defect. In order to do this, we must first check whether the sacrifices we offered are flawed or not. In this same way, worship should be given with a prepared mind. And worship must begin with repentance. Worship without repentance is no different from that of shaman. We must deny ourselves before the Word the God in order to be filled with the life, love, and power of God, and our lives and thoughts will be transformed and live by God. In this way, we can experience the work of saving the world.
2. We must be certain that the future will be in accordance with the Word of God: In verses 4 to 5, Festus did not know about this conspiracy, so he told the Jews to press charges against Paul at Caesarea since he was going there as well and by doing so, he politely refused to bring Paul to Jerusalem. From verse 6 and onwards, after eight to ten days passed, Festus, returned to Caesarea and opened the trial for Paul the next day. But the problem was that no matter how many times they wanted to bring down Paul, they could not do so since Paul had done nothing wrong. So Festus fell into trouble and finally asked Paul, “Are you willing to go to Jerusalem and stand trial before me there?” (verse 9). But Paul firmly declined. As such, Festus who was in a dilemma, ended the trial by saying, “Very well! You have appealed to Caesar, and to Caesar you will go!” (verse 12). Here, we question why Festus made this final decision in the midst of a great political burden and risk. What is the reason? It is because of what God said in Acts 23:11. Here we can find the precious lessons God has given to us. It is that “we must be certain that the future will be in accordance with the Word of God.” Please do not forget. The world moves according to God’s Word. So when we live according to the Word of God, we see the future. So our future depends on the Word God.
Concluding the sermon: A worship that is alive is the beginning to a true life. We live when the worship is alive. Please get out of your meaningless and habitual religious life. And when our reasoning collides with the Word of God, we should hold onto the Word of God and live on the Word of God. Then you can win.
