제목: 사람을 감동시키는 바울의 삶

곧 모든 겸손과 눈물이며 유대인의 간계로 말미암아 당한 시험을 참고 주를 섬긴 것과….내가 달려갈 길과 주 예수께 받은 사명 곧 하나님의 은혜의 복음을 증언하는 일을 마치려 함에는 나의 생명조차 조금도 귀한 것으로 여기지 아니하노라(행20:19,24)
사도행전 강해 75번째 시간입니다. 오늘 본문은 사도 바울이 3차 전도 여행을 마치고 예루살렘으로 가기 전에 잠시 에베소 교회 장로들을 초청하여 그들에게 마지막 눈물로 고별 설교를 하고 있는 장면입니다. 이 고별 설교를 통해서 에베소 교회 장로들에게 보인 바울의 모범적인 사역의 자세가 무엇이었는지 함께 살펴보고자 합니다.
1.안주하지 않는 삶: 바울은 에베소에서 3년간 머물면서 크나큰 부흥과 열매를 맛보게 되었습니다. 그리고 가는 곳마다 어려움도 있었지만 복음의 능력으로 큰 부흥과 하나님의 놀라운 역사를 맛보게 되었습니다. 사실 많은 사람들은 부흥과 열매를 맛보게 되면 안주하게 됩니다. 그런데 바울은 ‘이 정도면 됐다, 이 정도면 내가 충분히 사역을 감당했다’고 생각할텐데 바울은 그 자리에 안주하지 않았습니다. 13-15절에 보면 바울은 드로아에서 그의 일행을 배를 태워 먼저 보내고 자신은 혼자 도보로 여행을 하다가 앗소에서 일행과 합류하여 배를 타고 미들레네, 기오, 사모를 거쳐 밀레도에 이르게 됩니다.
이 밀레도는 바울이 3년 동안 목회했던 에베소와는 매우 가까운 곳이었습니다. 그러나 바울은 에베소에는 들리지 않기로 합니다. 사실 바울은 에베소에 있는 성도들과 깊은 정이 들지 않았습니까? 그런데도 불구하고 될 수 있는 대로 오순절 안에 예루살렘에 이르려고 발걸음을 재촉합니다(16절) 이처럼 바울은 안주하지 않는 삶을 살았습니다. 사도행전 8장에 보면 우리가 잘 아는 핍박이 나옵니다. 예루살렘 교회가 너무 교제권이 탄탄하고 따듯한 모임이었기 때문에 그들은 흩어지려고 하지 않았습니다. 그 때 하나님의 성령이 예루살렘 교회에 준 축복이 무엇이었습니까? 핍박이었습니다. 핍박을 통해서 흩어버리니까 그들이 나가서 복음 증거하는 사람으로 변화되더라는 것입니다.
그래서 우리 삶의 모든 도전들, 고난, 변화들을 어려움이라고만 생각하지 마시기 바랍니다. 어찌보면 그것이 하나님께서 우리 인생의 궤도를 바꾸는 뜻일 수도 있고, 내 성장의 한계를 깨버리는 하나님의 축복일 수도 있습니다. 하나님께서는 우리가 더 넓어지기를 원하십니다. 익숙한 것에 안주하지 마시기 바랍니다. 안주하지 않는 것이 커가는 것이고 성장하는 것입니다.
2.눈물이 있는 삶: 바울은 바쁜 일정 가운데도 유독 밀레도에서 사람을 에베소에 보내어 에베소 교회의 장로들을 불렀습니다(17절) 바울이 밀레도에서 에베소 교회 장로들을 기다렸던 것은 다름 아닌 에베소 교회를 향한 사랑 때문이었습니다. 바울은 이제 자신이 예루살렘에 가면 다시는 그곳을 방문할 수 없을 것임을 잘 알고 있었습니다(25절) 그래서 바울은 에베소 교회 장로들을 불러 그들에게 마지막 고별 설교를 한 것입니다(18절) 바울은 “모든 겸손과 눈물과 인내로 주님을 섬긴 사실을 고백하고 있습니다.”(19-21절) 바울의 설교에는 바울이 행한 3개의 동사가 나옵니다. “섬기다, 가르치다, 증언하다”
무엇보다 우리가 이 바울의 고별 설교를 통해서 알 수 있는 것은 바울은 눈물이 있는 삶을 살았다 라는 것입니다(19,31절) 바울은 불도저 같이 전진만 하는 인생이 아니었습니다. 바울에게는 눈물이 있었습니다. 사랑과 아파하는 마음이 있었습니다. 그러니까 장로들이 다 웁니다(37절) 그래서 하나가 되는 것입니다. 바울은 하나님의 종으로써 실력이 있었습니다. 많이 배운 사람입니다. 그런데 더불어 눈물이 있었습니다. 따듯한 가슴이 있었습니다. 이 눈물이 있었기 때문에 사람들을 변화시킬 수 있었던 것입니다. 원래 바울은 어떤 사람이었습니까? 스데반이 잡혀 돌에 맞아 죽을 때도 냉정했던 사람이었습니다. 그런데 부활하신 주님 만나고 나서 바울은 눈물의 사람으로 변화가 되었습니다. 잊지 마십시요. 눈물 가지고 주의 사역을 하면 영혼을 건져낼 수 있고 무슨 일이라도 감당하는 하나님의 종들이 될 줄로 확신합니다.
3.생명보다 사명을 더 소중히 여기는 열정의 삶: 본문 22절 이하를 보면 바울은 예루살렘에 올라가게 되면 결박과 환난이 기다리고 있다 라는 사실을 알고 있었습니다. 그럼에도 불구하고 무슨 고백을 합니까? “내가 달려갈 길과 주 예수께 받은 사명 곧 하나님의 은혜의 복음을 증언하는 일을 마치려 함에는 나의 생명을 조금도 귀한 것으로 여기지 아니하노라”(24절) 바울이 우리와 달리 남다른 인생을 살 수 있었던 것은 바울은 일반적으로 우리 모두가 소중히 여기는 생명보다도 오히려 사명을 더 우선시하고 살았기 때문입니다. 그러니까 하나님께서 주신 사명을 생명보다 귀히 여길 만큼 바울 안에는 복음에 대한 열정, 뜨거움이 있었다라는 것입니다.
하나님 앞에서 우리가 꼭 가져야 할 것이 바로 이 열정입니다. 이 열정이라는 단어가 영어로 “passion”인데 이 passion이라는 단어의 뜻이 무엇인가? 하면 “열정(뜨거운 감정, 뜨거운 욕구)” 이란 뜻과 더불어 “고난”이라는 뜻이 있습니다. 그러니까 어떤 난관과 어려움이 있다 할지라도 그 고난을 뛰어넘는 것이 열정이라는 것입니다. 그러니까 고난이 크면 클수록 열정이 크다 그 얘기와 똑같다 라는 것입니다. 한마디로 “고난 극복의 힘”이 열정이라는 것입니다. 바울의 인생이 참 아름다운 이유가 바로 여기에 있습니다. 바울은 안주하지 않고, 눈물이 있고 그리고 고난을 감수하고 나가는 그 모습이 있었습니다. 고난이 있으십니까? 주님 주신 사명 감당하다가 당하는 어려움이 있으십니까? 고난 중에 제발 추해지지 마시기 바랍니다. 마귀하고 고난이 만나면 그렇게 반응합니다. 그러나 하나님의 말씀과 사랑과 고난이 만나면 바울처럼 삶이 아름다워 집니다.
말씀을 마칩니다: 사도 바울이 가는 곳마다 사람을 변화시키고 사람들의 마음을 얻을 수 있었던 것은 바울은 안주하지 아니하고 눈물이 있었으며 또한 사명을 생명보다 더 소중히 여기는 열정이 있었기 때문입니다. 우리 모두도 하나님께서 주신 사명을 생명보다 더 귀히 여기는 열정이 있는 믿음의 종들이 다 되시기를 바랍니다.

Title: The Life of Paul that Influenced People

“I have done the Lord’s work humbly and with many tears. I have endured the trials that came to me from the plots of the Jews… But my life is worth nothing to me unless I use it for finishing the work assigned me by the Lord Jesus—the work of telling others the Good News about the wonderful grace of God.” (Acts 20:19, 24 – NLT)
Today is the 75th series of the Book of Acts. Today’s scriptures is a scene where apostle Paul finished the third evangelism journey and before going to Jerusalem, he invited the elders of the church in Ephesus for a short while and preached a farewell sermon with his last tears. Through this farewell sermon, we will look at what Paul’s exemplary ministry was to the elders of the church in Ephesus.
1. A life that does not settle down: Paul stayed in Ephesus for three years and tasted great revival and fruit. And although he faced difficulties wherever he went, with the power of the gospel he was able to experience a great revival and the wonderful work of God. In fact, many people will come to rest or settle down when they experience revival and fruit. And Paul could have thought the same by thinking, “This is enough, I did enough of ministry.” But, Paul did not settle down. In verses 13-15, Paul sent the party on the ship first from Troas, because he was going to travel there alone on foot. He later joined the party again at Assos, and took the ship to Mitylene, Kios, and Samos and then to Miletus.
The place called Miletus was very close to Ephesus, where Paul did ministry for three years. But Paul decided not to stop by Ephesus. Even though he developed a deep relationship with the saints in Ephesus, he nevertheless, wanted to hurry his steps to reach Jerusalem, if possible, by the day of Pentecost (verse 16). Thus, Paul lived a life that did not settle down. If we look at Acts 8, it tells us about the persecution that we know well of. The church in Jerusalem did not want to be scattered because they had such a strong fellowship and a warm gathering. But at that point, what was the blessing that the Holy Spirit of God gave to the church in Jerusalem? It was persecution. And since they were scattered through persecution, they went out and were changed into people who preached the gospel.
Therefore, let us not just think of all the challenges, hardships, and changes in our lives as difficulties. It may be that God is changing the course of our lives, or it may be God’s blessing to us in order break the limitations surrounding our growth. God wants to widen our paths. Please do not settle at the place where you are familiar with. We grow when we do not settle down.
2. A life with tears: Despite his busy schedule, Paul sent a person from Ephesus to Miletus to call for the elders of the church in Ephesus (verse 17). The reason why Paul was waiting for the elders in Ephesus in Miletus was no other than because of his love for the church in Ephesus. Paul knew that he would never be able to visit them again once he left for Jerusalem (verse 25). So that is why Paul called for the elders of the church in Ephesus and preached to them the last farewell sermon (verse 18). Paul confesses of how he served the Lord with great humility, and with tears and with patience (verses 19-21). Paul’s sermons included three verbs that Paul demonstrated: “Serve, teach, testify“.
Above all, what we can learn from this farewell sermon of Paul was that Paul lived a life of tears (verses 19, 31). Paul’s life was not just an advance forward-only life, like a bulldozer. Instead, Paul also had tears. There was love and pain in Paul’s heart. So that is why all the elders wept (verse 37) and through this they became one. Paul was competent as a servant of God. He was also a learned man. But despite that, he was a man with tears. He had a warm heart. And it were these very tears that allowed him to change people. What kind of person was Paul initially? He was a cold person even when Stephen was stoned to death. However, after meeting with the resurrected Lord, Paul changed to a person of tears. Please do not forget. I am convinced that if you do your ministry with tears, you will be able to rescue souls and become servants of God who can do anything.
3. A life of passion that cherishes mission more than life: If you look at subsequent to verse 22, Paul knew that if he went up to Jerusalem, prison and hardships were awaiting for him. But despite this, what did he confess? “But my life is worth nothing to me unless I use it for finishing the work assigned me by the Lord Jesus—the work of telling others the Good News about the wonderful grace of God” (verse 24). The reason why Paul was able to live a different life from us, was because he generally lived by giving priority to missions rather than to life, which is what we all cherish. In other words, there was enthusiasm and passion for the gospel in Paul as much as he regarded the mission given by God as more precious than life itself.
Similarly, it is this passion that we must also have before God. The word “Yeol-Jeong” (Korean word for “passion”) in English is “passion”. What does the word passion mean? There are two meanings to it. First, “passion” means, “hot feeling, hot desire” and the other meaning to it is “hardship“. So, even when we are faced with some difficulties, it is passion that allows us to jump over our sufferings. In other words, it is the same saying as, “the greater the suffering, the greater the passion”. In short, “the power to overcome suffering” is passion. That is why Paul’s life was so beautiful. Paul did not settle down and he had tears, and he showed endurance during his hardships. Are you facing hardships right now in your life? Are you facing hardships while fulfilling the mission that God has given to you? I hope that you will not become a messy person through hardships and sufferings. When the devil and sufferings meet, that is how they respond. But when the Word of God love, and hardships meet, life becomes beautiful like it did for Paul.
Concluding the sermon: The reason why apostle Paul was able to change people everywhere he went and win the hearts of the people was because he did not settle down, and he had tears, and he had a passion of cherishing God’s mission more than life itself. I hope that we can all become faithful servants who have a passion that values God’s mission more than life itself.
