그들이 날짜를 정하고 그가 유숙하는 집에 많이 오니 바울이 아침부터 저녁까지 강론하여 하나님의 나라를 증언하고 모세의 율법과 선지자의 말을 가지고 예수에 대하여 권하더라 그 말을 믿는 사람도 있고 믿지 아니하는 사람도 있어(행28:23-24)
사도행전 강해 97번째 시간입니다. 다음 주면 사도행전이 끝이 납니다. 오늘 본문은 천신만고 끝에 로마에 도착한 바울이 행한 마지막 일을 기록하고 있습니다. 오늘 우리는 수없이 많은 죽을 고비를 넘겨 마침내 서게 하신 로마에서 바울이 이룬 일과 그 결과를 통해서 하나님이 원하시는 사도행전의 궁극적인 기대가 무엇인가? 살펴보고자 합니다.
1. 로마에서 한 일: 바울은 우여곡절 끝에 로마에 도착한 후 사흘 뒤 바로 로마의 유대인들을 초청하여 자신이 로마에까지 오게 된 배경을 설명합니다. 그러자 바울에 대해 깊은 흥미를 느낀 로마의 유대인들은 다시 만나고자 일자를 정하고서 2차로 바울을 다시 찾아와 만나는 것이 오늘 본문의 내용입니다. 바울은 가택 연금 당해 있는 자신의 집에 몰려온 로마의 유대인들을 앉혀 놓고는 “아침부터 저녁까지” 하루 온 종일 복음을 강론하였습니다(23절)
그러면 바울이 하루 온 종일 그렇게 전하고 싶었던 복음의 내용이 무엇입니까? 바울이 증언한 복음은 대단히 중요한 두 개의 단어와 연관되어 있습니다. “하나님 나라”와 “예수”입니다. 이 두 가지는 바울의 선교에 있어서 가장 중요한 메시지였습니다(23절) 바울은 모세의 율법과 선지자들의 말을 가지고 곧 구약 성경의 주제인 “장차 오실 메시야”의 예언을 가지고 신약 복음의 주제인 “오신 메시야인 예수”를 전파했습니다. 실로 바울은 온 민족의 반대를 당하면서도 끝까지 예수님이 곧 메시야이심을 선포하는 바로 이 사명 하나 때문에 이제까지 걸어왔던 것입니다. 그리고 하나님은 이 “하나님 나라와 예수”의 복음 증거를 위해 수없이 죽을 고비 고비를 넘긴 바울을 끝내 로마에 서게 하신 것입니다
왜 로마에 가게 하셨으며 왜 로마에 서게 하셨습니까? 그리고 왜 이 복음을 선포하게 하셨습니까? 예루살렘에서 땅 끝까지 이르는 세계 선교를 위해 하나님께서 예비하신 길이기 때문입니다. 이 예수를 받아들이는 사람들 속에 하나님의 나라가 이루어지기 때문입니다. 세상의 그 무엇 과도 바꿀 수 없는 영원한 생명과 구원의 은총이 있기 때문입니다. 우리는 어떻습니까? 복음 증거 기회가 있을 때 무엇을 증거하셨습니까? 하나님의 나라와 예수 그리스도만을 증거했습니까? 아니면 세상에서 얻을 수 있는 축복만을 강조하였습니까? 누가 이 복음을 전할 수 있나요? 신학교에 갔다 와야 전합니까? 그렇지 않습니다. 훈련 받고 입을 닫고 사는 사람이 얼마나 많은지 모릅니다. 복음 증거는 예수 믿고 구원받아 내 안에 하나님의 나라가 임한 사람은 누구나 전할 수 있는 것입니다. 사도행전은 바울을 통해 바로 이것을 우리에게 증거하고 있습니다
2.복음 증거의 결과: 바울이 로마로 가게 된 것은 바울이 원했던 것이고 또한 하나님의 뜻 역시 세계 선교를 위해 바울을 로마로 가게 해서 복음을 전하게 하는 것이었습니다. 그러면 그토록 원하던 로마로 갔으면 그 곳에서 복음을 전했을 때 뭔가 굉장한 결과가 일어나는 것이 우리가 기대하는 것이 아니겠습니까? 그런데 로마에서 복음을 전한 결과가 무엇입니까? “그 말을 믿는 사람도 있고 믿지 아니하는 사람도 있어 서로 맞지 아니하여 흩어질 때에…”(24-25절) 이것이 복음을 전한 결과입니다. 참 이상하지 않습니까?
바울이 대체 누구입니까? 2천 년 기독교 역사상 가장 위대한 사도요 가장 뛰어난 변증가입니다. 더군다나 바울의 강론은 100분 강의가 아닙니다. “아침부터 저녁까지” 종일 설교했습니다. 그러니까 질적으로나 양적으로나 최고의 설교를 들었다는 것입니다. 그러면 거의 다 믿어야 될 것 아닙니까? “그런데 믿는 자도 있었고 믿지 않는 사람도 있었다” 이렇게 이야기합니다. 그런데 사실 이것은 그리 놀랄 일이 아닙니다. 예수님께서는 하나님이신 동시에 로고스 말씀 그 자체였습니다. 그렇지만 예수님의 설교를 들은 사람들이 다 예수님을 믿었던 것도 아닙니다. 예수님의 설교를 들었던 유대인 대부분은 도리어 예수님을 십자가에 못박아 죽이는 무리에 가담하거나 동조했습니다.
그러면 생각해 보십시요. 동일한 공간에서 동일한 복음을 들었는데도 왜 복음을 받아들이는 사람과 거부하는 사람으로 갈라지는가 하는 것입니다. 바울은 사6:9-10절 말씀을 인용해서 바로 복음을 영접하지 아니하는 로마의 유대인들을 책망을 합니다(25-27절) 그리고 바울은 이 질문에 대한 해답을 이미 1차 전도 여행중 비시디아 안디옥에서 얻은바 있었습니다. 행13:48절에 의하면 하나님이 영생을 주시기로 작정된 사람만 믿고 그 은혜를 입지 못한 사람은 동일한 장소에서 동일한 복음을 들어도 믿지 못한다 라는 것입니다.
결국 그토록 고생해서 로마까지 가서 되어진 일이 무엇입니까? “듣기는 들어도 깨닫지 못하고 보기는 보아도 알지 못한다”라는 선지자의 말이 확인되었을 뿐이라는 것입니다. 그래서 우리는 하나님이 원하시는 결과는 많은 사람이 예수를 믿는 것에만 있는 것이 아니라 본문에서처럼 들어도 듣지 못하고 보아도 보지 못하는 세상의 어둠 상태를 드러내시는 것도 있음을 알아야 합니다. 그러므로 복음을 증거할 때 결과를 생각하지 말고 다만 믿음으로 담대하게 복음을 증거하시기 바랍니다. 세상은 결과를 보고 그 사람의 능력을 평가하지만 하나님을 결코 그런 방식으로 일하시는 분이 아닙니다. 많은 일을 못한다고 낙심하지 마시고 믿음으로 복음을 전하지 못하는 것을 애통해 하시기 바랍니다. 또한 말씀에 대한 태도가 우리 인생과 운명을 바꾼다 라는 것을 아시고 믿는 자가 되시는 축복이 임하기를 바랍니다.
말씀을 마칩니다: 신앙은 특별한 일을 하는 것으로 증거되는 것이 아닙니다. 또한 특별한 일을 하는 사람이 특별한 사람이 아닙니다. 가치있는 신앙의 삶을 드러난 결과로 판단하지 마시고 오직 믿음으로 하나님의 나라와 예수가 그리스도 되심을 힘있게 증거하는 복음의 증인 되시기 바랍니다.

Title: Acts and the Kingdom of Heaven

“So a time was set, and on that day a large number of people came to Paul’s lodging. He explained and testified about the Kingdom of God and tried to persuade them about Jesus from the Scriptures. Using the law of Moses and the books of the prophets, he spoke to them from morning until evening. Some were persuaded by the things he said, but others did not believe.” (Acts 28:23-24 – NLT)
Today is the 97th series of the Book of Acts. Next week will be the end of the Book of Acts. Today’s scriptures records the last thing Paul did when he arrived to Rome at the end of the many difficulties. Today, we will take a look at what is the ultimate expectation of the Book of Acts that God wants, through the work that Paul did in Rome and the results of it.
1. The work Paul did in Rome: Three days after arriving to Rome after many dangerous circumstances, Paul invited the leaders of the Jews in Rome and explained to them why he came to Rome. Then the Jews in Rome, who were deeply interested in Paul, set a date to meet him again, and then came back to meet Paul a second time. This is the content of today’s scriptures. Paul sat down with the Jews in Rome who had gathered in his rental house where he was placed and he preached the gospel all day long “from morning to evening.” (Verse 23).
What, then, was the content of the gospel that Paul wanted to preach all day like that? The gospel that Paul witnessed was associated with two very important words: “The kingdom of Heaven” and “Jesus”. These two were the most important messages in Paul’s mission (verse 23). With the Law of Moses and from the Prophets, Paul spread the prophecy of the Old Testament theme, “the coming Messiah,” to the New Testament theme of the gospel, “the Messiah who came.” Indeed, despite all the opposition Paul faced from the nations, he had walked so far because of this one mission, to proclaim that Jesus is the Messiah. And God finally allowed Paul to stand in Rome for the evangelism of this gospel, “The kingdom of God and Jesus”, after allowing him to overcome several crises.
Why did God tell Paul to go to Rome and why did He allow him to stand before Rome? And why did he proclaim this gospel? It was because God had prepared the way for world mission from Jerusalem to the end of the earth. It was also because the kingdom of God was established in those who accepted Jesus. In addition, it was because eternal life and the grace of salvation cannot be replaced with anything else in the world. How are we? What did you witness when you had the opportunity to witness the gospel? Did you testify only of the kingdom of God and Jesus Christ? Or did you only emphasize of the blessings that you can receive from the world? Who can preach the gospel? Do we have to go to Bible school? No, it is not like that. I do not know how many people who have received training yet live with their mouths closed. The gospel can be witnessed by anyone who believes in Jesus and is saved and has the kingdom of God in them. The Book of Acts testifies this to us through Paul.
2. The result of the witness of the gospel: Paul went to Rome because it was his desire to go to Rome and also it was God’s will to send Paul to Rome for world mission to preach the gospel. However, if he went to Rome where he wanted to go so much, would we have not expected something great to happen when the gospel was preached there? But what was the result of preaching the gospel in Rome? “Some were persuaded by the things he said, but others did not believe. And after they had argued back and forth among themselves, they left…” (Verses 24-25). This is the result of preaching the gospel. Is this not strange?
Who was Paul? In the 2,000 years of Christian history, he was the greatest apostle and the most distinguished preacher. Moreover, Paul’s sermon was not a 100-minute lecture. He preached all day from “morning until evening.” Therefore, they heard the best sermon both qualitatively and quantitatively. Then should not most of them have believed? But, “Some were persuaded by the things he said, but others did not believe.” But in fact, this is not surprising. Jesus was both God and the Logos itself. However, not everyone who heard Jesus preached believed in Jesus. Most of the Jews who listened to Jesus preached either joined a group or agreed to crucify and kill Jesus.
Then let’s think about it. Why is it that a division occurs between those people who accept the gospel and reject it, despite that they have heard the same gospel in the same space? Paul used Isaiah 6:9-10 to rebuke the Roman Jews who did not receive the gospel (verses 25 to 27). Paul had already obtained the answer to this question from his first evangelism journey in Pisidian Antioch. According to Acts 13:48, only those who were chosen for eternal life can believe and receive that grace, but those who hear the same gospel in the same place cannot believe if they do not accept the grace.
What was the outcome of going all the way to Rome and facing the several hardships along the way? It only confirmed what the prophet said: “When you hear what I say, you will not understand. When you see what I do, you will not comprehend.” So we need to know that the result God wants is not only for many people to believe in Jesus, but that He also reveals the dark state of the world where we will be ever hearing but never understanding and ever seeing but never perceiving. Therefore, when you testify of the gospel, do not only think about the outcome, but simply yet boldly testify the gospel with faith. The world looks at the result and evaluates the person’s ability, but God never works in that way. Do not be discouraged that you cannot do much, but rather mourn that you cannot share the gospel with faith. Our attitude towards the Word of God changes our lives and destiny. As such, knowing this, I hope that the blessing of being a believer will come upon you.
Concluding the sermon: Belief is not evidenced by doing something special. Also, by doing special type of work does not make you a special person. Please do not judge that a valuable life of faith comes from the result or outcome, but instead I hope that you will become powerful witnesses who solely witness the kingdom of God and Jesus Christ by faith.
