이 사람들은 다 믿음으로 말미암아 증거를 받았으나 약속된 것을 받지 못하였으니 이는 하나님이 우리를 위하여 더 좋은 것을 예비하셨은즉 우리가 아니면 그들로 온전함을 이루지 못하게 하려 하심이라(히11:39-40)
히11장, 믿음장 강해 21번째 마지막 시간입니다. 히브리서 기자는 믿음장 강해를 마무리하면서 믿음으로 하나님을 기쁘시게 한 수많은 구약에 나오는 믿음의 선진들에 비해 신약 시대의 성도들이 어마어마한 특권을 누리고 있음을 언급하고 있습니다. 본문 말씀을 통해서 믿음의 온전함을 이루기 위해 꼭 붙들어야 할 것이 무엇인가? 살펴보고자 합니다.
1. 믿음이 들어가면 세상이 감당하지 못하는 사람이 됩니다: 히브리서 기자는 우리가 정말 성경에서 말하는 참된 믿음을 가지면 “이런 사람은 세상이 감당하지 못한다”(38절) 라고 말하고 있습니다. 많은 신앙의 사람들이 믿음으로 하나님의 놀라운 기적을 경험했습니다. 한편 어떤 믿음의 사람들은 하나님이 그런 기적을 일으켜 주지 않아도, 하나님이 기도에 응답하지 않으셔도 끝까지 하나님을 사랑하고 하나님을 신뢰했던 사람들이 있습니다. 다시 말해 믿음으로 승리하는 사람과 믿음 때문에 고난을 당하는 사람은 본질적으로 동일한 믿음임을 말하고 있습니다.
이렇게 세상에는 두 종류의 사람이 있는데 하나는 “세상이 감당하지 못하는 사람들” 다시말해 세상을 두렵게 만드는 사람들, 세상을 당황케 하는 사람들, 세상의 유혹에 전혀 흔들리지 않는 사람들이 있고, 또 한편으로는 “세상을 감당치 못하는 연약한 사람들”, 조금만 어려움을 만나도 흔들리고, 세상의 유혹에 쉽게 물드는 사람이 있음을 보여주고 있습니다. 그런데 히브리서 기자는 이런 세상이 감당하지 못하는 사람이 어떤 특정한 사람이 아니라 비록 약한 사람이라 할지라도 “믿음”이 들어가면 이렇게 세상이 감당하지 못하는 놀라운 사람이 됨을 선포하고 있습니다.
그래서 본문 39절은 우리에게 이렇게 말하고 있습니다. “이 사람들은 다 믿음으로 말미암아 증거를 받았으나…” 여기서 “증거를 받았으나”는 “하나님께 믿음으로 칭찬과 인정을 받았으나”라는 의미입니다. 그러니까 아무리 약해도 믿음만 들어가면 모든 것을 다 변화시킬 수 있다 라는 것입니다. 그래서 히브리서 기자는 이 믿음장을 마무리하면서 마지막으로 우리에게 말씀하고 있는 것입니다. 하나님의 백성은 어떤 상황에서도 절대로 절망해서는 안된다 라는 것입니다. 환경 탓하면 안된다 라는 것입니다. 아무 것도 없어도 괜찮다 라는 것입니다.
바울은 고후12:10에서 이렇게 말합니다. “그러므로 내가 그리스도를 위하여 약한 것들과 능욕과 궁핍과 박해와 곤고를 기뻐하노니 이는 내가 약한 그 때에 강함이라” 바울은 약하면 약할수록 더 좋다고 말합니다. 왜 그렇습니까? 하나님 더 의지하고 하나님 붙드니까 그 믿음으로 인해 오히려 승리하는 인생이 되더라는 것입니다. 잊지 마십시요. 우리가 아무리 약하고 부족해도 믿음 붙들고 나가면 “세상이 감당하지 못한다”라고 이야기합니다. 그러므로 세상 그 무엇보다 믿음의 사람이 되시기 바랍니다. 그러면 이 믿음의 선배들이 경험한 놀라운 은혜를 맛보실 것입니다.
2. 신앙의 완성은 예수 그리스도 입니다: 우리는 사실 이 믿음장에 나오는 구약의 믿음의 선진들을 바라보면서 기가 죽습니다. 세상이 감당치 못하는 사람들! 이란 말에 더 고개를 숙이게 됩니다. 그런데 히브리서 기자는 놀랍게도 우리가 더 대단하다 이런 이야기를 합니다. 왜냐하면 이 히11장에 언급된 선진들은 다 믿음으로 하나님께 인정함을 받았는데, 약속된 것을 받지 못했다 라고 증거하고 있습니다. 여기서 “약속된 것”이란 구속사적인 의미입니다. 즉 39절의 약속된 것이란 “약속의 완전한 성취”로 “예수 그리스도를 통한 영원한 하나님 나라의 구현”을 의미합니다.
그 근거가 바로 40절입니다. “이는 하나님이 우리를 위하여 더 좋은 것을 예비하셨은즉 우리가 아니면 그들로 온전함을 이루지 못하게 하려 하심이라” 여기서 “하나님께서 우리를 위하여 더 좋은 것을 예비하셨다”는 말씀은 바로 “예수 그리스도 안에서 이루어질 완전한 약속의 성취”입니다. 그래서 구약의 선진들은 믿음으로 하나님으로부터 인정함을 받았지만, 그들이 받았던 약속의 성취는 완전한 성취가 아니고 단지 그리스도 안에서 이루어질 완전한 성취에 대한 맛보기 수준입니다.
그러나 이들에 비하면 신약 시대의 성도들은 하나님으로부터 어마어마한 특권을 누리고 있습니다. 우리는 믿음의 선진들이 감히 경험해 보지 못한 하나님 약속의 완전한 성취, 즉 예수 그리스도를 통한 온전한 구원을 경험하기 때문입니다. 그러므로 우리는 구약의 믿음의 선진들보다 더 나은 소망을 갖고 있으므로 그들보다 더 신실한 믿음을 갖고 담대하게 살아야 합니다. 그들이 약속을 얻지 못하고 멀리서 바라보면서도 극심한 고난과 역경을 이겨냈다면 예수 그리스도 안에서 더 나은 소망의 성취를 바라보는 우리 역시 충분히 우리에게 닥친 또는 닥쳐올 고난도 이겨낼 수 있게 됨을 믿으셔야 됩니다.
한마디로 구약의 선진들은 예수님 모를 때도 이렇게 쓰임 받았는데, 그런데 우리는 예수님을 아는 그런 자들이라는 것입니다. 그리고 우리가 아니면 그들로 온전함을 이루지 못하게 하려 하심이라. 그러니까 믿음이 이렇게 대단한 사람들 조차도 우리가 있어야 믿음이 완성이 이루어진다 라는 것입니다. 그래서 히브리서 기자는 이 믿음장을 매듭 지으면서 히12:2에서 이렇게 말합니다. “믿음의 주요 또 온전하게 하시는 이인 예수를 바라보자…” 무슨 말입니까? 우리의 신앙의 완성은 예수 그리스도 라는 것입니다. 우리에게는 예수 그리스도 이름의 능력이 임한다 라는 것입니다. 그러므로 우리 인생의 완성도 예수님이 들어가야 완성이 될 수 있다는 것입니다. 이 소망 안에서 믿음의 삶을 사시기를 축복합니다.
말씀을 마칩니다: 맥추 감사절 주일에 사랑하는 성도 여러분! 여러분은 세상이 감당치 못하는 믿음을 소유하기 원하십니까? 만약 이 믿음을 갖기를 원하신다면 믿음의 주요 온전하게 하시는 예수를 바라보셔야 합니다. 그 분 안에 온전한 용서와 온전한 의와 온전한 약속의 성취가 있음을 아시고 장차 그리스도와 함께 누릴 영광을 바라보고 성령의 충만함을 통해 고난과 핍박을 이기고 세상이 감당치 못할 믿음으로 살아가는 복된 삶이 되시기를 바랍니다. 그러면 늘 감사가 넘치고 이 믿음이 여러분을 세상이 감당치 못하는 승리의 삶으로 반드시 인도할 것입니다.
The Completion of Faith

Title: The Completion of Faith

“These were all commended for their faith, yet none of them received what had been promised. God had planned something better for us so that only together with us
would they be made perfect.” (Hebrews 11:39-40 – NIV)
Today is the 21st and last expository sermon of the Book of Hebrews, chapter 11, the chapter of faith. As the writer of the Book of Hebrews concludes the chapter of faith, he mentions that the believers in the New Testament period enjoyed enormous privileges compared to the many ancestors of faith in the Old Testament who pleased God with their faith. Through today’s scripture, let us take a look at what we must hold on to in order to achieve the perfect faith.
1. If you have faith, you will become a person who the world is not worthy of: The writer of the Book of Hebrews says that if we really have true faith as mentioned in the Bible, we are people who “the world is not worthy of” (verse 38). Many Christians experienced God’s wonderful miracles by faith. On the other hand, there were some people of faith who did not experience those miracles or had their prayers answered by God, but nevertheless, they still loved and trusted God to the end. In other words, those who overcome by faith and those who suffer because of faith, essentially have the same faith.
There are two kinds of people in the world. The first type of people are Christians who, “the world is not worthy of”, that is, Christians who make the world afraid and puzzled by them and they are not shaken by the temptations of the world. On the other hand, the second type of people are those who are Christians, “who have weak faith and as such, they cannot overcome the world”. These kinds of people are those who become shaken when faced with even a little difficulty and who easily fall for the temptations of the world. However, the writer of the Book of Hebrews declares that a person who the world is not worthy of, is not a specific person. But instead even if they are a weak person, as long as they have real “faith”, as mentioned in the Bible, they can become people who the world is not worthy of.
So, it says in verse 39 of today’s scripture, “These were all commended for their faith…” Here, “These were all commended” means, “they have been complimented and acknowledged by God through their faith”. So, no matter how weak you are, you can change everything if you just have faith. That is what the writer of the Book of Hebrews is telling us as he concludes the chapter of faith. He is saying that God’s people should never despair under any circumstances. We should not blame our circumstances. And it is ok even if we have nothing.
Paul says in 2 Corinthians 12:10, “That is why, for Christ’s sake, I delight in weaknesses, in insults, in hardships, in persecutions, in difficulties. For when I am weak, then I am strong.” Paul mentions the weaker we become, the better it is. Why is that? It is because we hold on to God more and become more dependant on God. And that faith leads to a victorious life. Please do not forget. No matter how weak and lacking we are, it says that if we hold on to faith, the “world is not worthy of us“. Therefore, I want you to be a person of faith more than anything else in the world. Then you will taste the amazing grace experienced by the ancestors of faith.
2. The completion of faith is Jesus Christ: We in fact, become despaired by looking at the ancestors of faith in the Old Testament who were mentioned in the chapter of faith. People who the world is not worthy of! We bow our heads even more at this. But the writer of the Book of Hebrews, surprisingly tells us that we are greater. This is because it proves that although all the ancestors of faith mentioned in Hebrews chapter 11 had been acknowledged by God through their faith, they had not received what had been promised. Here, “what had been promised”, means redemption. That is, in verse 39 it says that what had been promised means “the perfect completion of the promise”, which means “the realization of the eternal Kingdom of God through Jesus Christ”.
The basis of that is in verse 40. “God had planned something better for us so that only together with us would they be made perfect.” Here the words, “God had planned something better for us”, is the “perfect completion of the promise to be made in Jesus Christ”. Therefore, although the ancestors of faith in the Old Testament were acknowledged by God through their faith, the completion of the promise they received was not a perfect completion, but a taste of the perfect completion in Christ.
However, the saints in the New Testament period enjoyed tremendous privileges from God compared to them. This is because we experience the perfect completion of God’s promise, the perfect salvation through Jesus Christ. Therefore, since we have a better hope than our ancestors in the Old Testament, we must live with a more faithful faith and boldly than they did. We must believe that if the ancestors of faith had not receive what had been promised, but looked at them from a distance and overcame the extreme sufferings and difficulties, then we who have a better completion of the hope in Jesus Christ, will be able to overcome the hardships that come or will come on us.
In short, the ancestors in the Old testament, were used like this even when they did not know Jesus yet. But we are those who know Jesus. So only together with us, they will be made perfect. Thus, it means that faith is made complete even for those people who had such great faith, only when together with us. That is why the Hebrews reporter concludes the chapter of faith by saying in in Hebrews 12:2, “Let us fix our eyes on Jesus, the author and perfecter of our faith…” What does this mean? It means that the completion of our faith is Jesus Christ. It means that the power of the name of Jesus Christ will come upon us. Therefore, the completion of our life can only be completed when Jesus enters it. I bless you to live a life of faith in this hope.
Concluding the sermon: Dear beloved saints on this Sunday of the Feast of Harvest! Do you want to have faith that the world is not worthy of? If you want to possess this faith, you must look to Jesus, who is the author and perfecter of our faith. Knowing that there is perfect forgiveness, perfect righteousness, and perfect promise in Him, I hope that you will see the glory to be enjoyed with Christ in the future, overcome the sufferings and persecutions by being filled with the Holy Spirit, and live a blessed life by faith that the world is not worthy of. Then you will always be grateful, and this faith will surely lead you to a victorious life that the world is not worthy of.
