제목: 믿음으로 이삭을 드렸으니

아브라함은 시험을 받을 때에 믿음으로 이삭을 드렸으니 그는 약속들을 받은 자로되 그 외아들을 드렸느니라…그가 하나님이 능히 이삭을 죽은 자 가운데서 다시 살리실 줄로 생각한지라 비유컨대 그를 죽은 자 가운데서 도로 받은 것이니라(히11:17,19)
히브리서11장, 믿음장 강해 아홉 번째 시간입니다. 오늘 본문은 아브라함이 받은 시험 이야기로 독자 이삭을 바쳤다가 돌려 받는 사건을 기록하고 있습니다. 이 이삭을 바치는 사건을 통해 믿음의 본질이 무엇인가? 살펴보고자 합니다.
1.하나님을 위한 신앙인가, 나를 위한 신앙인가: 본문 17절은 이렇게 시작합니다. “아브라함은 시험을 받을 때에 믿음으로 이삭을 드렸으니” 여기서 “시험”이란 말은 “유혹”(tempt)이 아니라 “시험”(test)입니다. 하나님은 우리의 믿음을 항상 테스트 하십니다. 좋은 믿음은 저절로 생기는게 아니고 수 없는 크고 작은 시험을 거치면서 만들어지는 것입니다. 믿음 생활에서 시험은 피할 수 없습니다. 시험 보는 이유는 성장하게 하기 위해서입니다. 시험을 통과하는 과정을 통해서 우리의 믿음이 진짜인가 가짜인가 곧 믿음의 진정성과 순수성을 확인하게 됩니다(벧전1:7) 우리의 믿음은 시험을 거치면서 순수해지고 강해집니다. 그러므로 시험을 당할 때에 이상하게 여기지 말고 기쁘게 여겨야 합니다(약1:2)
오늘 하나님이 아브라함에게 이삭을 바치게 하는 시험에는 우리의 신앙이 과연 누구를 위해서 존재하는가? 하는 깊은 뜻이 담겨 있습니다. 내가 신앙 생활하는 것이 하나님을 위해서인가, 나를 위한 것인가 하는 이 질문이 바로 이삭을 제물로 바치는 사건입니다(창22: 12). 왜 이런 시험이 필요했을 까요? 아마도 아들 이삭을 100세에 얻고나서 아브라함의 삶에서 이삭이 우상이 되어 가는 것을 하나님이 보셨을 것입니다. 그래서 하나님은 아브라함에게 너의 신앙이 정말 하나님을 위한 신앙인가, 아브라함 자신을 위한 신앙인가를 점검하시길 원하셨던 것입니다.
우리 모두에게는 내가 하나님을 잘 섬기면 하나님이 복을 주실 것이라는 생각이 있습니다. 우리는 하나님보다 하나님으로 인하여 오는 어떤 결과물에 더 관심을 많이 갖습니다. 우리가 놓쳐서는 안될 것은 우리는 전적으로 하나님을 위해 존재하는 것이지 하나님이 우리를 위해 존재하는 것이 아니라는 것입니다. 이렇게 인간 중심에서 하나님을 믿으면 “성공과 번영 신앙”에 빠질 오류가 커집니다. 물론 인간 중심의 신앙이라고 하나님을 말하지 않는 것은 아닙니다. 인간 중심의 신앙 생활을 하는 사람들도 여전히 하나님을 강조하고 하나님께 영광을 돌리고 하나님의 뜻을 찾습니다. 그러나 그들의 중심에는 나를 위해 존재하시는 하나님으로 그들의 삶의 중심은 항상 “나”입니다
이런 인간적인 관점에서 보면 아브라함에게 이삭을 바치라는 시험은 얼토당토하지 않은 정말 받아들이기 힘든 시험입니다. 본문 18절에 “그에게 이미 말씀하시기를 네 자손이라 칭할 자는 이삭으로 말미암으리라 햐셨으니” 이처럼 하나님의 언약의 자손인 이삭을 바치라고 한 하나님의 요구는 하나님의 약속과 정면으로 대치되는 것입니다. 그러므로 이것은 분명한 하나님의 계약 위반입니다. 따라서 이 시험이 주는 메시지는 나의 신앙이 누구를 위한 신앙인가에 대한 아주 중요한 주제입니다. 우리가 이 시험의 의도를 파악하는게 중요합니다. 이 시험의 의도는 “네가 존재하는 이유가 무엇인가” 하는 것입니다. 네가 존재하는 이유가 “오직 나 여호와이냐” 그것을 증명하라는 것입니다.
사실 아브라함에게 있어서 이삭보다 더 귀중한 것은 없습니다. 그 이삭을 하나님은 원하셨습니다. 하나님은 이 시험을 통하여서 아브라함이 “본마음”을 증명해 보이기를 원하신 것입니다. 네가 정말 나를 하나님으로 인정하고 나를 위해 산다고 하면 이삭을 바치는 이 시험을 반드시 통과해야 한다는 것입니다. 다시 말해서 “나의 존재 이유는 하나님이 주신 것들이 아니라 바로 하나님 당신이십니다”라는 이 고백을 듣고 싶어하셨던 것입니다. 우리 각자에게도 “나의 이삭”이 있습니다. 이 이삭을 하나님의 약속의 말씀을 믿고 드릴 때 하나님은 우리의 마음만 받고 “여호와 이레”의 최고의 축복을 주십니다. 그리고 하나님은 갈보리에서 아들 예수 그리스도를 희생 제물로 주셨습니다, 참된 믿음은 하나님이 나에게 주신 것 때문에 하나님을 섬기는 것이 아니라 하나님 때문에 하나님을 섬기는 것입니다.
2. 부활 신앙이 참된 믿음입니다: 사실 아브라함이 외아들 독자 이삭을 바칠 때 가장 큰 딜레마는 아들의 죽음도 죽음이지만 하나님의 약속에 대한 갈등이었을 것입니다(18절) 분명 이 아들을 통해서 수많은 약속의 자손을 주시겠다고 약속하셨는데 이 아들이 죽으면 이 하나님의 약속은 어떻게 되는 것입니까? 그런데 아브라함은 이 하나님의 약속이 이루어지려면 이 아들은 반드시 다시 살아 나야 한다고 믿은 것입니다. 바로 부활 신앙입니다. “그가 하나님이 능히 이삭을 죽은 자 가운데서 다시 살리실 줄로 생각한지라…”(19절)
여기서 “능히” 라는 말과 “생각한지라” 라는 헬라어 원어는 단순한 추정이 아닌 “확신”을 뜻하는 말입니다. 한마디로 하나님과 하나님의 말씀에 대한 절대 확신입니다. 왜 우리가 죽음을 두려워합니까? 죽음이 끝이라고 생각하기 때문입니다. 아브라함은 철저하게 하나님의 말씀을 믿었습니다. 그래서 그는 하나님의 말씀이 반드시 그대로 성취된다는 것을 믿음으로 이삭을 드림으로 부활 신앙을 우리에게 보여주었습니다. 이처럼 참된 믿음은 반드시 부활 신앙을 내포하고 있습니다. 부활 신앙은 약속의 말씀을 신뢰함으로 오는 것입니다.
말씀을 마칩니다: 시험은 어렵습니다. 그러나 잘 치루고 나면 성장하고 놀라운 역사가 나타납니다. 이삭 시험은 우리를 위해서 하나님이 존재하지 않고 하나님을 위해서 우리가 존재한다는 사실과 부활을 증명하는 사건입니다. 우리도 “나의 이삭”을 바칠 수 있기를 바랍니다.

Title: By Faith Abraham Offered Isaac As a Sacrifice

“It was by faith that Abraham offered Isaac as a sacrifice when God was testing him. Abraham, who had received God’s promises, was ready to sacrifice his only son, Isaac, … Abraham reasoned that if Isaac died, God was able to bring him back to life again. And in a sense, Abraham did receive his son back from the dead. (Hebrews 11:17, 19 – NLT)
Today is the ninth series of the Book of Hebrews chapter 11, the chapter of faith. Today’s scriptures records the story of the test that Abraham received of offering Isaac as a sacrifice and then getting him back. Let’s take a look at what is the essence of faith through this story of offering Isaac.
1. Is this belief for God or for me: Verse 17 starts with, “It was by faith that Abraham offered Isaac as a sacrifice when God was testing him.” The word “test” here is not “tempt” but, “test”. God always tests our faith. Good faith does not happen by itself, but it is created through the countless number of large and small tests. Tests are inevitable in the life of faith. The reason for going through the test is to make us grow. The process of passing the test confirms whether our faith is real or fake, and it also confirms the authenticity and purity of our faith (1 Peter 1:7). Our faith becomes pure and strong as we go through tests. Therefore, when you are tested, you should not consider it as strange, but instead consider it as great joy (James 1:2).
There is a deep meaning behind the test that God gave to Abraham to offer Isaac to Him, which is, who is our belief for? The test of offering Isaac was to question who is my belief for – is it for God or is it for me? (Genesis 22:12). Why was this test needed? It was because God saw that Isaac would become an idol in Abraham’s life, given that he had him when he was 100 years old. As such, God wanted to check whether Abraham’s belief was really for God or for Abraham himself.
We all have the idea that God will bless us if we serve Him well. We are more interested in the outcome that comes from God rather than in God Himself. What we should not miss is that we exist entirely for God, and that God does not exist for us. If you believe in God in this human-centered way, you may increasingly fall into the trap of living a life that focuses on “success and prosperity” as its purpose. Of course, a human-centered belief does not mean that God is not spoken of. People who live a human-centered belief still emphasize God, glorify God, and seek God’s will. But at their center, they believe that God exists for them, and as a result, the center of their lives is always about “me”.
From this human point of view, the test of offering Isaac to Abraham was a really an unthinkable test and a test that was difficult to accept. In verse 18 of today’s scriptures, it says, ‘even though God had told him, “Isaac is the son through whom your descendants will be counted.”’ Thus, God’s request to offer Isaac directly conflicted with God’s covenant, that through Isaac, Abraham’s descendants would be counted. So this was clearly a violation of God’s covenant. So the message of this test is a very important topic, since it questions who is this belief for? It is important that we understand the intent of this test. The intention of this test is, “what is the reason behind our existence?” The reason why we exist is to prove that it is “only for God”.
In fact, nothing was more valuable to Abraham than Isaac. God wanted that Isaac. God wanted Abraham to prove “his real heart” through this test. If you really acknowledge me as God and live for Me, you must pass this test of offering Isaac. In other words, God wanted to hear this confession, “the reason for my existence is not because of the things that God has done for me, but for God alone.” Each of us also have “my Isaac”. When we offer this Isaac to God by believing in the promised Word of God, God receives our hearts and gives us the best blessing of “THE LORD WILL PROVIDE”. And God gave His Son, Jesus Christ as a sacrifice at the Calvary. True faith is not about serving God because of what God has given to me, but serving God, just because of God.
2. The belief of the resurrection is the true faith: When Abraham dedicated his only son, Isaac, the death of his son was a big dilemma, but a bigger dilemma was the conflict over God’s promise (verse 18). He may have wondered, how God’s promise to give him descendants through Isaac would have been fulfilled if Isaac died? However, Abraham believed that in order for God’s promise to be fulfilled, his son must be raised again. This is the belief of the resurrection. “Abraham reasoned that if Isaac died, God was able to bring him back to life again…” (verse 19)
Here, the Greek words for the words “was able” and the word “reasoned” are not just guesses, but “convictions”. In one word, it is the absolute confidence in God and God’s Word. Why are we afraid of death? It is because we think that death is the end. Abraham completely believed in the Word of God. Thus, by faith, Abraham offered Isaac, because he believed that the Word of God would be accomplished. Andy by doing so, he showed us the belief of the resurrection. Like this, true faith also includes the belief of the resurrection. Belief of the resurrection comes by trusting in the promised Word of God.
Concluding the sermon: Tests are difficult. However, when we pass them well, we grow and an amazing work appears. The test of sacrificing Isaac was an incident to prove that God does not exist for us, but that we exist for God and the resurrection. I hope that we can each offer “my Isaac”.
