본문: 사도행전 27:27-44

음식 먹기를 권하노니 이것이 너희의 구원을 위하는 것이요 너희 중 머리카락 하나도 잃을 자가 없으리라 하고 떡을 가져다가 모든 사람 앞에서 하나님께 축사하고 떼어 먹기를 시작하매 그들도 다 안심하고 받아 먹으니…마침내 사람들이 다 구조되니라(행27:34-36,44)
사도행전 강해 93번째 시간입니다. 오늘 본문은 유라굴로 광풍을 만나 열 나흘째 사투를 벌인 알렉산드리아 배에 탄 사람들을 하나님께서 모두 구해 주신 사건이 기록되어 있습니다. 본문의 내용은 풍랑 속에서 사도 바울이 함께 한 사람들에게 무엇을 보여 주고 증거하는 가를 말해 주고 있습니다. 본문을 통해 신자가 세상에서 증거해야 하는 것이 무엇이며 풍랑을 만났을 때 조심해야 될 것이 무엇인가 살펴보고자 합니다.
1. 그리스도인을 그리스도인 되게 하는 것: 본문 27절을 보면 바울과 함께 한 사람들이 풍랑을 만난지 14일이 경과했음을 알 수 있습니다. 풍랑 속에서 14일을 지났다 라는 것은 보통 일이 아닙니다. 더군다나 14일 동안 아침이면 해가 뜨고 밤이면 별이 뜨는 그런 날이 계속된 것이 아닙니다. 해도 별도 보이지 않는 칠흙 같은 어둠만 계속되었습니다. 그런 상황 속에서 폭풍에 밀려 배가 그레데 섬 미항에서 800km떨어진 아드리아 바다에까지 밀려왔습니다.
처음에는 살 수 있다는 믿음과 희망을 가질 수 있다 할지라도 14일 계속되는 현실 속에서는 죽음에 대한 두려움으로 가득 채워질 수 있는 상황인 것입니다. 그런데 우리가 한 가지 염두에 두어야 할 것은 풍랑을 만난지 사흘째 되던 날에 사도 바울이 아무도 죽지 않을 것을 말하면서 안심할 것을 두 번씩이나 독려한 것입니다(22,25절) 그 말을 하고 11일이 지난 것입니다. 이것이 무엇을 의미합니까? 죽음의 풍랑 속에서 바울이 하나님이 지켜 주시니 죽지 않는다는 말을 했다면 그들이 무엇을 기대하며 무엇을 바라보았겠습니까? 당연히 풍랑이 그치기를 기대하며 살기를 바라지 않았겠습니까? 그런데 열하루가 지나도 풍랑이 여전하다면 얼마든지 하나님과 하나님의 말씀에 대해 의심할 수 있는 상황이지 않겠습니까? 여러분이 바울과 같은 상황에 처해 있다면 어떻게 하시겠습니까?
그런데 바울은 하나님의 말씀에 대한 믿음에 흔들림이 없었습니다. 그런데 더 관심거리는 바울과 함께 배에 타고 있는 사람들의 반응입니다. 안심하라는 바울의 말에 대해 처음에는 기대를 가질 수가 있습니다. 배가 완전히 통제를 상실한 상황에서 달리 자신들이 취할 방법이 없는 시점에서 바울의 말을 지푸라기라도 붙잡고 싶은 심정으로 비록 막연하지만 믿고 싶었을 것입니다. 이런 마음으로 바울의 말을 받아들였다 할지라도 열하루가 지나도록 전혀 수그러들지 않는 풍랑을 바라본다면 “혹시나 했는데 역시나다”라는 심정으로 바울을 비난할 수도 있는 것입니다.
그런데 본문을 보면 전혀 바울을 비난하거나 불신하는 분위기가 아닙니다. 본문29-32절에 보면 풍랑을 만난지 열 나흘째 되던 날에 한 밤중쯤 되어 사공들이 몰래 도망치려고 거루(구명정)를 바다에 내려놓습니다. 그런데 이것을 알게 된 바울이 백부장과 군인들에게 “이 사람들이 배에 있지 아니하면 너희가 구원을 얻지 못하리라”(31절)은 말을 합니다. 그래서 바울의 말을 들은 군인들은 거루의 줄을 끊어 버립니다. 이러한 군인들의 행동을 보면 그들이 전적으로 바울을 신뢰하고 있었음을 짐작할 수 있습니다. 만약 바울의 말을 신뢰하지 않았다면 구명정에 매인 줄을 끊어버리겠습니까? 풍랑에서 구명정은 목숨과도 같은 것입니다.
또한 33-35절을 보면 바울은 음식을 먹을 것을 권합니다. 그랬더니 36절에 보면 “그들도 다 안심하고 받아 먹으니”라고 말합니다. 이것은 그들이 모두 바울의 말을 신뢰하고 있음을 보여주는 것입니다. 그렇다고 이들이 하나님을 믿었다고 볼 수는 없습니다. 그렇다면 결론은 그들은 하나님을 믿는 바울에게서 하나님을 보게 되고 안심하게 된 것입니다. 그런데 본문에서는 이들이 바울을 신뢰하게 된 뚜렷한 원인이 잘 드러나지 않습니다. 다만 한 가지 가능성으로 짐작해 볼 수 있는 것은 바울의 흔들림이 없는 믿음이 이들에게 신뢰를 준 것이 아닌가 하는 것입니다.
본문의 상황에서 바울에게 믿음이 없었다면 분명 의심과 원망과 두려움이 있었을 것입니다. 만약 바울이 원망하고 의심했다면 함께 한 사람들에게 하나님은 존재하지 않는 분으로 여겨졌을 것입니다. 이 바울의 모습이 바로 그리스도인을 그리스도인 되게 하는 것입니다. 여러분! 주변 상황을 돌아보면서 자신의 신세를 한탄하지 마시기 바랍니다. 그것은 믿음을 말하는 자가 스스로 믿음을 짓밟는 것입니다. 그리스도인을 그리스도인 되게 하는 것은 인격과 종교적인 행동으로 답을 내려서는 안됩니다. 그리스도인이 되는 것은 바울처럼 풍랑 속에서, 삶 속에서 함께 한 사람들에게 믿음을 보여주고 증거하는 것입니다. 이것이 그리스도인입니다.
2. 풍랑을 만났을 때 조심해야 될 것: 사도 바울을 태우고 로마로 가던 배에는 276명이 타고 있었습니다(37절) 그런데 하나님께서 그 무서운 죽음의 광풍 속에서 그 배에 탄 모든 사람들을 구원해 주셨습니다. 그러나 그 배에 탄 모든 사람이 다 구원 받기 까지 두 번의 고비가 있었습니다. 첫 번째 고비는 30-32절에 보니까 배가 풍랑을 만나서 거의 움직일 수 없게 되자 선원들이 배를 버리고 자기들만 살려고 거룻배를 내려 도망치려고 한 것입니다. 또 한번은 42-44절에 보면 배가 섬에 가까워서 난파되었을 때 죄수들이 도망할까 봐 군인들이 죄수들을 다 죽이려 할 때 바울은 말을 들은 백부장이 바울을 살리기 위해 죄수들을 살려줍니다. 그런데 악한 마귀가 풍랑을 통해서 강하게 역사하는 것은 배가 아니라 그 어려움 속에서 상황을 급박하게 만들어서 “나만 살겠다”라고 하는 이기심을 심어주는 것임을 우리는 알아야 합니다. 그래서 우리는 어려우면 어려울수록 “이기적인 마음”을 버리고 하나됨을 애써야 합니다. 이것이 풍랑을 이기는 하나님의 식입니다.
말씀을 마칩니다: 하나님이 세상에 신자를 세우신 이유는 우리를 통하여 하나님이 살아 계시고 세상의 모든 일을 주관하시고 그 은혜 안에 살고 있음을 증거하도록 하기 위함입니다. 그런데 그 은혜를 잊어버리고 단지 눈 앞의 이득만 바라보며 원망하고 불평한다면 이것은 세상 사람에게 하나님을 증거하지 못하는 것이 될 뿐 아니라 결국 신자로 존재할 타당성을 잃어버린 것입니다. 우리의 삶을 통해서 주변 사람들이 하나님을 발견할 수 있게 하는 것이 신자의 할 일이며 사명입니다. 또한 풍랑의 때에 우리가 정말 조심해야 될 것은 하나됨을 깨뜨리지 않도록 “나만 살겠다” 라고 하는 이기심을 버리는 것입니다. 이 하나됨이 성도의 진정한 모습입니다.

Title: In This Way Everyone Was Saved

‘“Please eat something now for your own good. For not a hair of your heads will perish.” Then he took some bread, gave thanks to God before them all, and broke off a piece and ate it. Then everyone was encouraged and began to eat— … So everyone escaped safely to shore.’ (Acts 27:34-36, 44 – NLT)
Today is the 93rd series of the Book of Acts. Today’s scriptures records how God rescued all the people who were on the Alexandrian ship when they were struggling against the northeaster storm for 14 days. The scriptures tells us what apostle Paul showed and testified to those who were with him in the storm. Through the scriptures, we will look at what the believer must witness in the world and what to watch out for when we meet a storm.
1. Making a Christian a Christian: In verse 27, we can see that 14 days had passed since Paul and the people in the ship had met the storm. Being in the storm for 14 days was not just any ordinary thing. In addition, it was not as if there was sun rising in the morning and the stars at night during the 14 days. They only continued in the deep darkness where no sun appeared. Under these circumstances, they were pushed by the storm all the way to the Adriatic Sea, 800 kilometers from Fair Havens, an island in Crete.
Even though they may have had faith and hope of living at first, they could have been filled with the fear of death if the reality persisted for 14 days. But one thing to keep in mind is that on the third day of the storm, apostle Paul mentioned two times to the people that no one would die (verses 22 and 25). After Paul said this, 11 days had passed. What does this mean? During storm of death, what would have been the expectation of people towards Paul and how would they have looked at him, if he had had told them that God would protect them and that they would not die? Would it not be obvious for them to expect the storm to stop and for them to survive? But if the storm was still the same even after eleven days later, do you not think that they could have doubted God and His Word? What would you have done if you were in the same situation as Paul?
But Paul was not shaken in his faith in the Word of God. And what was more interesting were the reactions of those people who were on board with Paul. At first, it would have been possible for them to set an expectation from Paul’s reassuring words to them. In a situation where the ship was completely out of control, they would have wanted to believe, though vaguely, with the desire to hold onto Paul’s words, since they were at a point where they could not do anything else and just wanted to hold onto anything. Even if they had accepted Paul’s words with this kind of heart, when looking at a storm that did not fade even after 11 days, they could have blamed Paul with the feeling of, “we thought maybe we could live, but that is not the case”.
However if we look at the scriptures, the atmosphere was not all about blaming or distrusting Paul. In verses 29 to 32, on the 14th day of the storm, the sailors let the lifeboat down into the sea in an attempt to escape from the ship. But when Paul found this out, he told the centurion and the soldiers, “You will all die unless the sailors stay aboard.” (Verse 31). So the soldiers who listened to Paul cut the ropes that held the lifeboat and let it fall away. The actions of these soldiers suggest that they were wholly trusting in Paul. If they did not trust in Paul’s words, would they have cut off the ropes that held the lifeboat? The lifeboats are almost same as one’s life during a storm.
Also if we look in verses 33 to 35, Paul recommended the people to eat. Then in verse 36 it says, “Then everyone was encouraged and began to eat—.” This showed that they all trusted in Paul’s words. However, this does not mean that they believed in God. Hence, the bottom line was that they saw God and obtained courage through Paul who believed in God. However, the obvious reason for their trust in Paul is not evident in the scriptures. The only possibility is that Paul’s unwavering faith gave them confidence.
If Paul had not had faith in the given circumstance in the scriptures, there would have definitely been doubt, resentment, and fear. If Paul had resented and doubted, then those people who were with him would have regarded God as not existent. This image of Paul is what makes a Christian a Christian. Everyone! Please do not complain at yourself when looking at your circumstances. If so, then this is basically the person speaking of faith trampling on his own faith. Making a Christian a Christian should not be answered by personality and religious behavior. To be a Christian is to show our faith and to testify like Paul, to those who have been with him in the storm and in life. This is a Christian.
2. Things to watch out for when we meet a storm: There were 276 people on board the ship that was carrying apostle Paul to Rome (verse 37). But God saved all the people on board the ship from the terrible storm of death. However, there were two crises before all the people in the ship were saved. The first crisis was in verses 30 to 32, which was when the ship met the storm and was almost unmovable, so the sailors attempted to abandoned the ship and escape by themselves by letting the lifeboat into the sea. Another time was in verses 42 to 44, when the soldiers tried to kill all the prisoners in fear that they would escape, as the ship was being wrecked as they were drawing closer to the island. But, the centurion wanted to spare Paul’s life and so also saved the other prisoners’ lives. However, we must know that through the storms, the devil strongly works by not using the ship, but rather the circumstance by making the situation more urgent and it also plants in us the selfishness of “only I will live.” Therefore, the more difficult the circumstance becomes, we must put away the “selfish mind” and try to become one. This is God’s way of overcoming the storm.
Concluding the sermon: The reason God has established believers in the world is for us to witness that God is alive, He is in control of all things in the world, and that the world lives in His grace. But if we forget that grace, and look at only the benefits before our eyes, and complain and grumble, not only do we fail to testify about God to the people of the world, but we also lose the validity of being a believer. It is the believer’s job and mission to enable those around us to discover God through our lives. Also, what we must really need to be careful of in the storms is to give up the selfishness of “I will live only,” so as not to break unity. This unity is the true form of the saints.
