제목: 기생 라합의 믿음

믿음으로 기생 라합은 정탐꾼을 평안히 영접하였으므로 순종하지 아니한 자와 함께 멸망하지 아니하였도다. (히11:31)
히11장, 믿음장 강해 19번째 시간입니다. 오늘 본문은 히11장에 나오는 믿음의 조상들 중 라합에 관한 이야기로 마지막 장식을 하고 있습니다. 라합은 아브라함의 자손도 아니고 이방 여인으로 세상 사람들도 꺼리는 기생입니다. 이런 여인을 믿음의 선진과 같은 반열에 세운 히브리서 성경 기자의 의도와 기생 라합의 믿음의 비밀에 대해서 살펴보고자 합니다.
1. 믿음은 비천한 인생을 중심 인물로 만듭니다: 우리가 앞서 살펴본 믿음의 선진들은 모두 유대인들에게 존경 받는 인물들입니다. 그런데 마지막 소개하는 사람은 유대인들이 싫어하는 이방인일 뿐 아니라 당시 하나님의 심판의 대상이었던 여리고 성 출신이며 더군다나 세상 사람들도 꺼리는 기생입니다. 이런 라합을 믿음의 선진과 같은 반열에 세운 것은 그리고 이런 신분의 여인이 예수님의 육신의 조상이 되는 족보에 기록되어 구원사의 중심에 우뚝 서게 되었다는 것은 대단히 놀랍고 또한 우리의 신앙 관념을 새롭게 바꾸어 놓는 일입니다.
당시 이 히브리서 서신을 받은 초대 교회 성도들의 형편은 예수님을 믿는 믿음으로 인해 심한 박해를 받는 어려움에 처해 있었습니다. 이런 어려움에 처한 성도들에게 히브리서 기자는 믿음 하나만 붙들면 얼마든지 중심 인물이 될 수 있으며 라합과 같이 다시 일어설 수 있으며 얼마든지 영광스러운 명품 인생이 될 수 있음을 보여주는 것입니다.
약2장을 보면 후일 야고보 사도는 믿음의 사람의 대표로 아브라함과 더불어 기생 라합을 소개합니다. 이렇게 비천하고 부끄러운 신분에 놓여 있다 할지라도 얼마든지 믿음이 우리의 신분을 바꾸어 놓으며, 믿음이 우리의 운명을 바꾸어 버리며, 믿음이 우리의 구속사의 위치를 바꾸어 놓는 한마디로 구원은 전적으로 하나님의 주권에 있음을 보여주는 것입니다.
2. 참된 믿음은 지정의 곧 인격의 변화를 가져 옵니다: 오늘 본문은 여호수아 2장을 배경으로 하고 있습니다. 수2장에 보면 여호수아가 가나안 정복의 첫 관문이었던 여리고 성 전투에 앞서 정탐꾼 두 명을 보내 그곳 사정을 알아보게 합니다. 여호수아의 명을 받고 여리고 성에 몰래 침투한 두 정탐꾼들은 기생 라합의 집에 거하며 현지 사정을 알아보는 일을 수행합니다(수2:1). 그런데 이것이 발각되어 군사들이 라합의 집에 몰려오게 됩니다 (수2:3). 두 정탐꾼의 목숨이 라합의 손에 달려 있는 상황이 전개됩니다.
이 때 라합은 두 정탐꾼을 지붕에 숨겨 두고 군사들에게 거짓 말로 둘러 댑니다. 그들이 이미 떠났는데 얼마 지나지 않았으니 급히 따라가면 잡을 수 있을 것이라고 말한 것입니다(수2:4-7). 자기 나라를 침공하기 위해 몰래 들어온 적국의 스파이를 숨겨준 것입니다. 이는 자기 민족을 배신한 매국적 행위였습니다. 라합은 군사들이 떠난 후 지붕에 올라가 숨어 있는 정탐꾼들에게 자신이 왜 목숨 걸고 그들을 숨겨두고 거짓말로 군사들을 보냈는지에 대해 설명합니다(수2:8-11) 그리고 그들을 살려준 댓가로 자기 가족들을 살려줄 것을 요구합니다(수2:12-13). 이에 두 정탐꾼들은 라합에게 전쟁이 벌어지면 붉은 줄을 창문에 매어 놓고 전 가족이 집에 함께 있으라고 말하고 이 약속대로 라합과 그의 가족들은 모두 구원을 받습니다(수2:14-24) 이것이 기생 라합에 대한 성경의 기록입니다.
그러면 라합의 믿음은 도대체 무엇입니까? 오늘 본문 31절은 이렇게 말합니다. “믿음으로 기생 라합은 정탐꾼을 평안히 영접하였으므로 순종하지 아니한 자와 함께 멸망하지 아니하였도다” 라합이 멸망의 도성인 여리고에서 구원받은 것은 단 한 가지 이유 밖에 없음을 성경은 우리에게 말해 주고 있습니다. 그것은 라합이 하나님이 행하신 일을 보고 안 것이 아니라 소문으로 들려오는 하나님을 믿어 그 하나님을 경외하는 마음으로 목숨을 걸고 두 정탐꾼들을 숨겨 주었는데 성경은 그것을 믿음의 행위로 인정하였다는 것입니다(롬10:17).
라합이 어떻게 이런 믿음을 가지게 되었습니까? 라합은 출애굽 후 40년 동안 광야에서 하나님이 행하신 일들을 들었던 것입니다(수2:10-11) 이런 놀라운 하나님이 행하신 일을 듣고 마지막 고백이 무엇입니까? “…너희의 하나님 여호와는 위로는 하늘에서도 아래로는 땅에서도 하나님이시니라…”(수2:11). 라합은 하나님에 대한 지적인 동의와 더불어 분명한 고백을 합니다. 바울은 이런 라합과 같은 신앙 고백을 구원의 조건이라는 차원에서 롬10:10에서 이렇게 말합니다. “사람이 마음으로 믿어 의에 이르고 입으로 시인하여 구원에 이르느니라” 마음이 신앙이 머무는 곳이라면, 입술은 신앙이 고백 되는 곳입니다. 그런데 라합은 하나님이 행하신 일들에 대한 소식을 듣자 그 하나님을 온 마음으로 믿고 고백하게 된 것입니다.
그러나 라합의 믿음은 신앙 고백에서 멈추지 않았습니다. 라합은 수2:11에서 “우리가 듣자 곧 마음이 녹았고 너희로 말미암아 사람이 정신을 잃었나니…” 하며 감정적 변화를 보입니다. 그리고 라합의 믿음은 믿음에 근거한 구체적인 행함으로 나타났습니다. 그것이 하나님의 백성들의 대표로 온 정탐꾼들을 영접하고 보호하여 다시 평한히 돌려보내는 행위였습니다. 사실 이런 행위는 라합편에서는 목숨을 거는 행위였습니다. 그러나 하나님에 대한 믿음 때문에 라합은 담대할 수 있었습니다(약2:25-26). 여러분! 믿으면 행하게 되어 있습니다. 참된 믿음에는 반드시 의지적 결단이 따릅니다. 여러분은 예수님 믿고 난 다음에 무슨 대가를 치루었습니까? 라합은 하나님 때문에, 하나님 편에 서기 위해 모든 것을 포기합니다. 믿음은 라합으로 하여금 자신의 모든 것을 포기하면서도 하나님 편에 서고자 하는 모습을 보여줍니다. 이것이 믿음입니다.
말씀을 마칩니다: 진정한 믿음은 라합과 같이 하나님을 향한 지적인 동의, 감정적인 움직임, 그리고 의지적 결단을 동반합니다. 그래서 신자에게는 하나님과의 관계보다 더 중요하고 우선되는 것은 없습니다(눅14:26) 라합은 자신의 인생의 마지막 소망을 하나님께 걸어 버립니다. 그래서 붉은 줄을 매답니다. 믿음은 모든 것을 포기하고서라도 이 관계를 포기할 수 없는 자로 사는 것입니다. 이것이 성경에서 말하는 믿음입니다.
The Faith of the Prostitute Rahab

Title: The Faith of the Prostitute Rahab

“By faith the prostitute Rahab, because she welcomed the spies, was not killed with those who were disobedient.” (Hebrews 11:31 – NIV)
Today is the 19th series of the Book of Hebrews, chapter 11, the chapter of faith. Today’s scripture concludes the story of the ancestors of faith with the final story of Rahab in Hebrews chapter 11. Rahab was not a descendant of Abraham, but a foreign woman and a prostitute who people were against. Let us examine the intention of the writer of the Book of Hebrews, who established this woman in the same class as the ancestors of faith, and the secret of Rahab’s faith.
1. Faith turns a miserable life into the life of a main character: All of the ancestors of faith that we looked at earlier were people who were respected by the Jews. However, the last person that was introduced was not only a foreigner who was hated by the Jews, but also a native of the city of Jericho, which was the object of God’s judgment at the time. In addition, she was a prostitute who the world was against. However, it is amazing to see that Rahab was put in the same class as the ancestors of faith and that a woman at this level was recorded in the physical genealogy of Jesus and placed at the center of the history of salvation. Moreover, this has changed our concept of belief.
At the time, the circumstances of the early church saints who received this Hebrew letter were in severe persecution because of their faith in Jesus. To the saints in these difficult circumstances, the writer of the Book of Hebrew showed that with just faith alone, you could become a main character, and stand up again like Rahab, and have a glorious and genuine life.
In the Book of James chapter 2, the Apostle James later introduced Rahab the prostitute together with Abraham as the representatives of the people of faith. Even if we are in such a miserable and shameful state, it shows that faith changes our status, destiny, and the way to salvation. In short, it shows that salvation is totally of God’s sovereignty.
2. True faith leads to a change in the intellect, emotion, and will, which is personality: The background of today’s scriptures is set in Joshua chapter 2. In chapter 2, Joshua sent two spies to find out the situation in Jericho, before the battle of Jericho, the first gateway to the conquest of Canaan. Under the command of Joshua, two spies who secretly infiltrated the city of Jericho, dwelled in the house of the prostitute Rahab and worked to find out the present situation (Joshua 2:1). However, this was found out and the soldiers came to Rahab’s house (Joshua 2:2-3). So, a situation unfolded in which the lives of the two spies were dependent on Rahab’s hands.
At this time, Rahab had hidden the two spies on the roof and sent the soldiers back by lying to them. She told them that the men had left, but since they had not left too long ago, that they would be able to catch them if they went after them quickly (Joshua 2:4-7). She hid the spies of the enemy who had come in secret to invade their country. This was a national act of betrayal. Rahab explained to the spies who were hiding on the roof after the soldiers left, the reason why she risked her life by hiding them and sending the soldiers away by lying to them (Joshua 2:8-11). And in return for saving them, she requested them to save the lives of her family (Joshua 2:12-13). So, the two spies told Rahab to tie a scarlet cord in the window when the war broke out and for her whole family to be at home, and according to this promise Rahab and all of her family were saved (Joshua 2:14-24). This is the biblical account of the prostitute Rahab.
So, what was Rahab’s faith? In verse 31 of today’s scripture, it says: “By faith the prostitute Rahab, because she welcomed the spies, was not killed with those who were disobedient.” The Bible tells us that there was only one reason why Rahab was saved from Jericho, the city of destruction. The reason was not because Rahab saw what God had done, but instead because she believed in God who she heard of through the rumors. Thus, she risked her life in fear of God and hid the two spies. And the Bible recognized this as an act of faith (Romans 10:17).
How did Rahab have this faith? Rahab had heard what God had done in the wilderness for 40 years after the Exodus (Joshua 2:10-11). What was the last confession of Rahab after she heard this amazing work of God? It was, “…for the Lord your God is God in heaven above and on the earth below.” (Joshua 2:11). Together with an intellectual consent of God, Rahab made a clear confession. Paul says in Romans 10:10, that this confession of faith in Rahab is a condition of salvation: “For it is with your heart that you believe and are justified, and it is with your mouth that you confess and are saved.” If the heart is where the faith is, it is with our mouths that our faith is confessed. However, when Rahab heard about the things that God had done, she believed in God with all her heart and confessed of God.
But Rahab’s faith did not stop at her confession of her belief. Rahab showed an emotional change when she said in Joshua 2:11, “When we heard of it, our hearts melted and everyone’s courage failed because of you,…” And Rahab’s faith was shown through the firm and detailed actions of her faith. It was the act of welcoming and protecting the spies who came as the representatives of God’s people and returning them in peace. In fact, in Rahab’s perspective, this was an act of risking her life. But Rahab was able to be bold because of her faith in God (James 2:25-26). If you believe, you will act. True faith is followed by a willful decision. What did you pay for after believing in Jesus? Rahab gave up everything because of God and to stand for God. Faith showed Rahab wanting to stand on God’s side while giving up everything. This is faith.
Concluding the sermon: True faith, like Rahab, is accompanied by an intellectual consent, an emotional movement, and a willful decision. Therefore, there is nothing more important to a believer than a relationship with God (Luke 14:26). Rahab put the last hope of her life to God and followed God whole-heartedly. So that is why she tied the scarlet cord. Faith is to live as a person who cannot give up this relationship while giving up everything else. This is the faith that is spoken in the Bible.
