제목: 교회를 섬기는 원리 (2)

내가 아무의 은이나 금이나 의복을 탐하지 아니하였고….범사에 여러분에게 모본을 보여준 바와 같이 수고하여 약한 사람들을 돕고 또 주 예수께서 친히 말씀하신 바 주는 것이 받는 것보다 복이 있다 하심을 기억하여야 할지니라(행20:33,35)
사도행전 강해 77번째 시간입니다. 오늘 본문은 3차 전도 여행을 다 마치고 예루살렘을 향해 가던 사도 바울이 에베소 교회 장로들을 밀레도로 불러 교회를 섬길 때에 꼭 붙들어야 할 사역의 원리들을 말씀해 주는 고별 설교입니다. 특별히 오늘 본문은 고별 설교의 결론 부분으로 주의 몸 된 교회를 섬기는 자들이 복음 증거와 더불어 어떠한 모습으로 삶을 살아야 할지를 보여 주고 있습니다.
1.물질에 대한 바른 관이 있어야 합니다: 사도 바울은 에베소 교회 장로들에게 때를 얻든지 못 얻든지 예수 그리스도의 복음을 증거하는 사명을 다하며 그 복음 증거의 사명을 감당하기 위해서는 무엇보다 말씀의 사람이 되어야 할 것을 간곡히 당부합니다. 그러다가 바울은 갑자기 화제를 바꾸어 이야기를 합니다. 그것은 “사명은 말로 하는게 아니라 삶으로 하는 것이다” 하면서 무엇보다 바른 물질에 대한 분명한 모습이 있어야 함을 강조합니다.
그래서 자신은 누구로부터도 은이나 금이나 의복을 탐하지 아니하고 오히려 스스로 노력하여 자기와 동료들의 쓸 것을 벌었다는 사실을 언급하며 나아가 끊임없이 주변의 힘없는 자들을 도와 주었다고 언급합니다.(33-35a) 그러니까 바울이 정말 마음에 소원하는 것은 교회를 섬기는 자들은 무엇보다도 물질 문제에 대한 시험에서 이기는 자가 되어야 한다는 것입니다. 이 물질에 대해서 바른 물질관을 갖지 않으면 처음에는 좋은 뜻으로 하는 사람도 나중에는 반드시 그 일로 시험에 들게 되어 있다는 것입니다. 왜냐하면 돈 문제는 이 세상에서는 하나님보다 더 큰 영향력을 끼치기 때문에 마귀가 가만히 있을 리가 없기 때문입니다.
그래서 바울은 당시 적대자들로부터 돈을 위해 사역한다는 빌미를 주지 않기 위해서 자급 자족하며 전도하였던 것입니다. 바울은 자신이 복음을 전하는 것은 대가를 받기 위한 것이 아니라고 하였습니다. 만일 바울의 마음 속에 은이나 금이나 의복이나 이런 물질에 대한 유혹을 이기지 못하였다면 바울은 하나님의 말씀을 온전히 다 전하지 못하였을 것입니다. 왜냐하면 영혼이 생명으로 보이지 아니하고 돈으로 보이고 자신의 후원자로 보이면 그 사람의 귀에 듣기에 좋은 말만 전할 수 있기 때문입니다.
우리가 한 사람의 신앙 인격과 믿음을 알아보는 데는 여러 가지 시금석이 있습니다. 그 사람의 말이라든지 태도, 고난 중의 자세 등을 통해서 인격과 믿음을 알 수 있습니다. 그런데 사람의 인격과 믿음을 가장 정확히 알 수 있는 시금석은 역시 돈에 대한 태도입니다. 사람이 무슨 말을 하든 행동이 어떻든 간에 그 사람의 돈에 대한 자세를 보면 그 사람이 무엇에 관심이 있는지 정확히 알 수 있습니다. 성도에게도 마찬가지 입니다. 돈 쓰는 것을 보면 가장 큰 관심을 갖는 데가 어디인지, 무엇을 가장 사랑하는지 금방 알 수 있습니다.
교회도 마찬가지입니다. 우리 교회는 선교하는 교회이다, 어려운 이웃을 돕는 교회이다 맨날 주장해도 그 교회의 지출 내역을 보면 명확히 알 수 있습니다. 성도는 이 땅에서 살아갈 때 지혜롭게 살아야 합니다. 무엇보다 돈 문제에서 지혜로워야 합니다. 그래야만 가치 있는 인생을 살 수 있기 때문입니다. 솔로몬은 전도서 5장에서 가장 먼저 예배의 회복을 외칩니다. 그 다음으로 강조하는 것이 물질의 청지기됨 입니다. 우리의 신앙이 건강해지기 위해서는 무엇보다 바른 물질의 청지기가 되어야만 합니다.
2.받는 것보다 주는 자의 삶을 살라: 물질에 대한 바른 자세를 강조하면서 사도 바울은 굉장히 중요한 말을 합니다. 그것은 “주는 것이 받는 것보다 복이 있다”(35절) 곧 주는 것이 행복하다 라는 말씀입니다. 그런데 바울은 이것을 “예수께서 친히 말씀하신 바”라고 말합니다. 그러니까 바울에게 복음 증거의 사명을 주시면서 그 사명을 행복하게 감당할 수 있는 비결을 예수님이 친히 가르쳐 주셨다 라는 것입니다. 이 세상의 대부분의 사람들은 주는 것보다 받는 것이 복이다 라고 생각합니다. 그래서 죽는 날까지 많이 쌓고 채우고 하는 것이 삶의 목표입니다. 그러나 주님은 “어리석은 부자”의 비유에서 우리에게 이런 사람을 미련하고 불쌍한 인생이라고 선언하십니다.
왜 주는 자가 행복합니까? 우리는 하나님의 형상대로 지음 받은 하나님의 자녀입니다. 그런데 하나님의 속성 중의 하나는 “주는 분”(giver) 이시기 때문입니다.(고전4:7, 약1:17) 그러므로 하나님을 닮기 원하는 사람은 우선 주는 자가 되어야 합니다. 또 물질은 축복의 잣대가 아니라 은사입니다. 하나님께서 우리에게 선물로 주신 것입니다. 물질도 은사이기 때문에 섬김과 연결되어야 합니다.
사람들은 받는 것을 보면 부러워합니다. 공짜로 얻는 것을 보며 부러워합니다. 그러나 예수 믿는 우리들은 주는 사람을 부러워해야 합니다. 왜냐하면 주는 사람을 부러워 하면 주는 사람이 되고 받는 사람을 부러워 하면 항상 받는 자가 되기 때문입니다. 하나님은 독생자를 주시기 까지 우리를 사랑하셨습니다. 우리는 주면서 주님의 사랑과 용서를 배우게 됩니다. 그래서 주면서 성화되는 것입니다. 주는 삶을 통해서 주님 닮아가는 행복한 사람이 되는 것입니다. 오늘 저와 여러분의 관심은 어디에 있습니까? 받는 쪽입니까? 주는 쪽입니까
말씀을 마칩니다: 바울은 사명을 말로 감당하는 것이 아니라 삶으로 보여 주었습니다. 믿으면 행하게 되어 있습니다. 하나님이 주신 사명을 삶으로 증거하시기 바랍니다. 특별히 물질에 대한 바른 모범을 보이며 또 주는 것이 받는 것보다 복되도다 라는 말씀을 통해서 내게 주신 것을 주변의 이웃과 나누는 아름다운 삶을 사시는 은혜가 있기를 축원합니다.

Title: The Principle to Serving the Church (2)

“I have never coveted anyone’s silver or gold or fine clothes… And I have been a constant example of how you can help those in need by working hard. You should remember the words of the Lord Jesus: ‘It is more blessed to give than to receive.’ ” (Acts 20:33, 35 – NLT)
Today is the 77th series of the Book of Acts. Today’s scriptures tells us about apostle Paul who had just finished the third evangelism ministry and was about to leave for Jerusalem. But before doing so, he sent to Ephesus for the elders of the church from Miletus, to preach a farewell sermon about the principles of ministry that we should hold onto when serving the church. In particular, today’s scriptures is about the conclusion part of the farewell sermon and it tells us about how we should live our lives in addition to preaching the gospel, when serving the church.
1. There must be a proper understanding of materialism: Paul told the elders of the church, that in order to fulfill the mission of witnessing the gospel of Jesus Christ, they must become people of the Word of God. Then suddenly Paul changed the subject and emphasized that “mission is not what we do with words, but through our lives,” and that we must have a proper understanding of money and materialism.
Paul mentions that he did not covet silver or gold or clothing from anybody, but rather with his own hands he worked to supply his own needs and even the needs of those of his colleagues who were with him. He also mentions that by doing so, they have helped the weak (verses 33 – 35a). So what Paul really wanted for them was to be able to overcome trials and temptations relating to the issue of money and materialism, when serving the church. If they do not have a proper understanding of money and materialism, then even those who do good things will surely be tested later on through those. The reason for this is because the issue of money and materialism has more influence in this world than God, the devil cannot stand still.
So Paul supplied his own needs so that the antagonists would not be able to say that he preached for money. Paul said that he did not preach the gospel to get a price. If Paul did not overcome the temptations of silver, gold, clothing, and such materialistic things in his heart, he would not have been able to fully communicate the Word of God. For if the soul is not seen as a life, but instead seen as money and seen as his supporter, then only good words can be spoken of him to hear.
There are various factors to trying to recognize one’s personality and belief. We can find out about a person’s character and faith through theirs words, attitude, and by looking at their attitude during hardships and difficulties. However, the best way to know that person’s character and faith is by looking at their attitude towards money. Regardless of what a person says or does, you can see exactly what they are interested in by looking at their attitude towards money. The same is true of saints. When we spend money, we can quickly find out what we are most interested in and what we love the most.
The same are with churches. Regardless if a church always states, ‘Our church is a missionary church, a church that helps our neighbors in difficult times’, we can find out if it is true by looking at the expenditures of the church. The saints must live wisely when they live on this earth. Above all, we must be wise in matters of money in order to live a worthwhile life. In Ecclesiastes 5, Solomon first cried out for the restoration of worship. The next thing he emphasized was the stewardship of money. In order for our faith to be healthy, we must become proper stewards of money.
2. Live the life of giving rather than receiving: As apostle Paul spoke about having the proper attitude of money, he further spoke very important words by saying, ‘It is more blessed to give than to receive’” (verse 35). But Paul says that, “…remember the words of the Lord Jesus.” So although Paul received the mission to preach the gospel, he was able to do so joyfully because Jesus Himself taught Paul how to do so. Most people in this world think that it is more blessed to receive rather than to give. As such, the goal of their lives becomes to continuously build up and store up much as possible until the day of death. But in the parable of the “rich fool,” the Lord declares that such people are foolish and miserable.
Why is the giver happier? We are children of God who were created in the image of God. However, one of God’s attributes is the “giver” (1 Corinthians 4:7, James 1:17). Therefore, a person who wants to be like God must be a giver. Materiality is not a kind of blessing, but a gift. It is God who gave us these gifts. Since materiality is also a gift, it must be connected with serving.
People become envious when they see others receiving. They also become envious when they see others get things for free. But we who believe in Jesus must envy those who give, instead of those who receive. For if you envy a person who gives, you will become a giver; but if you envy a person who receives, you will always become a person who receives. God loved us so much that He gave His only begotten Son, Jesus. When we give, we begin to learn the love and forgiveness of God. Therefore, we become sanctified as we give. Through the life of giving, we become happy and become more like Jesus. Where is our interest today? Is it in the receiving side or the giving side?
Concluding the sermon: Paul did not manage mission with words, but he showed it with his life. If you believe, you will do. I hope that we can we can preach the mission that God has given to us by showing it through our lives. Particularly, by having the proper understanding of money and materialism and through the message that it is more blessed to give rather to receive, I pray that we can live a beautiful life where we share with our neighbors.
