원고들이 서서 내가 짐작하였던 것 같은 악행의 혐의는 하나도 제시하지 아니하고 오직 자기들의 종교와 또는 예수라 하는 이가 죽은 것을 살아 있다고 바울이 주장하는 그 일에 관한 문제로 고발하는 것뿐이라 (행25:18-19)
사도행전 강해 87번째 시간입니다. 오늘 본문에는 아그립바 왕이 베스도 총독에게 문안 인사를 왔을 때에 베스도가 바울의 문제에 대하여 자문을 구하고 조언을 받으려는 장면이 소개되고 있습니다. 베스도의 고백을 통하여 바울이 무엇 때문에 어려움을 당하고 있는지 살펴 봄으로 교회가 전할 메시지와 성도가 추구해야 될 삶이 무엇인가? 살펴보고자 합니다.
1.바울이 고난 당하는 이유: 벨릭스에서 베스도로 총독이 교체가 되었습니다. 베스도는 부임하자마자 너무 많은 사람들이 자꾸 바울을 죽여야 된다고 하니까 굉장히 흉악한 자구나 생각하면서 조사해 보았습니다. 그런데 조사해 보았더니 별것 아니더라는 것입니다. 베스도가 마침 신임 총독인 자신에게 문안차 올라온 아그립바 왕과 버니게에게 이 바울의 고소 사건에 대하여 자기가 보기에는 바울은 죄가 없기 때문에 바울이 원하는대로 이 사람을 가이사의 재판을 받기로 결정을 내렸는데 “내가 어떻게 하면 좋겠습니까?” 하고 아그립바 왕에게 상담을 합니다. 이것이 본문 13-21절까지의 내용입니다.
그런데 여기 상담하는 내용 중에 주목할 만한 말이 나오는데 베스도가 이렇게 말합니다. “원고들이 서서 내가 짐작하였던 것 같은 악행의 혐의는 하나도 제시하지 아니하고 오직 자기들의 종교와 또는 예수라 하는 이가 죽은 것을 살아 있다고 바울이 주장하는 그 일에 관한 문제로 고발하는 것뿐이라”(18-19절) 그러니까 지금 식으로 이야기하면 굉장한 일인 줄 알았더니 시시하게 예수가 죽었느니 살았느니 이런 얘기더라는 뜻입니다. 베스도가 잘 몰라서 예수 그리스도의 십자가와 부활을 사소한 문제로 여기고 있지만 실은 베스도의 이 말이 우리에게도 상당히 중요한 모습으로 다가와야 합니다.
많은 사람들이 예수 믿는다고 이야기하면서도 예수님의 부활이나 십자가에 대해서 굉장히 사소한 것으로 생각하는 사람들이 참 많습니다. 항상 관심이 교회에 몇 명 모이느냐, 얼마나 영향력이 있느냐… 이런 데에 관심이 많지 정작 중요한 예수 그리스도의 십자가와 부활에는 관심이 없습니다. 이것이 바로 교회가 약화되는 모습입니다. 교회가 해야 될 일이 무엇입니까? 교회는 십자가와 부활을 증거해야 합니다. 십자가 없이 구원의 길 없습니다. 부활없이 영원한 생명을 얻을 수 없습니다. 십자가와 부활 신앙 없이 결코 세상을 이길 수 없습니다. 교회가 자꾸만 약해지는 이유가 무엇입니까? 십자가 없는 헛된 번영 신학에 빠져 있기 때문입니다. 그러므로 살아나는 교회, 살리는 교회가 되기 위해서는 예수 그리스도의 십자가와 부활을 믿고 강조하는 교회가 되어야 강한 교회가 될 수 있고 우리 성도들도 살아날 수 있습니다.
2. 성도가 당하는 진정한 고발의 내용: 지금 베스도가 아그립바 왕에게 하는 유대인들의 바울 고소 내용의 핵심이 무엇입니까? 바울에게 형사적인 증거는 전혀 보이지 않고, 오직 종교적인 문제이다 라는 것입니다. 다시말해 예수가 부활했다고 하는 그 주장 때문에 유대인들이 흥분해서 생긴 문제다 하는 것입니다. 여기에 오늘 우리가 깊이 생각해야 할 메시지가 담겨 있습니다. 지금 우리는 유대인들의 송사를 보았습니다. 벨릭스와 베스도의 재판을 보았습니다. 이 세 사람의 얘기의 요점이 무엇입니까? 바울이 도덕적으로 윤리적으로 문제가 전혀 없다는 것입니다. 지금 바울이 문제가 되는 것은 그가 주장한대로 예수 그리스도의 십자가와 부활 때문입니다.
그렇다면 오늘 교회와 그리스도인들이 재판장에 가는 이유는 무엇입니까? 바울처럼 예수 때문에 가는 것이 아니고, 거꾸로입니다. 도덕적이고 윤리적인 문제 그리고 돈 때문에 교회 재산권 때문에 교도소에 가지, 예수님 때문에 법정에 가는 사람이 거의 없습니다. 예수님 이야기 하다가, 부활 이야기 하다가, 십자가 이야기 하다가 고난을 당한 사람이 과연 우리 주변에 일부 선교지 빼놓고 어디에 있습니까? 한마디로 다 자기 문제요, 욕심과 재물과 비윤리적인 문제입니다. 그런 일로 인한 고난입니다. 자기 분수껏 살지 못한데서 오는 고난입니다.
그러나 사도 바울을 보십시요. 그는 예수를 믿은 후에 자신의 문제 때문에 고난을 받은 일이 없습니다. 자기가 저질러 놓은 일 때문에 고난을 당한 일은 없다는 것입니다. 그렇게 많은 고난을 당한 것은 오직 예수 그리스도를 위하여, 그 이름을 위하여, 그의 영광을 위하여 그의 복음을 위하여 고난을 당한 것입니다. 여러분은 무엇 때문에 고생을 하시며, 무엇 때문에 시험을 당하십니까? 더 이상 자신 때문에 고난 당하는 일이 없게 되기를 바랍니다.
본문 23절에 보면 아그립바 왕과 버니게는 아주 화려하고 권위있는 왕의 신분을 표시하는 옷을 입고 나타납니다.여기서 “위엄”이라는 말은 헬라어로 “판타시아”라는 단어로 “과식, 허식”이라는 단어입니다. 그리고 천부장과 성중의 높은 사람들도 저마다 화려한 옷을 입고 나타났습니다. 바로 그 자리에 바울이 불려 옵니다. 2년 동안 구금당해 있던 바울의 얼굴과 모습이 얼마나 초라했겠습니까? 하지만 우리가 그리스도인의 구별된 눈과 마음으로 이곳에 모인 사람들을 들여다 볼 때 누가 정녕 아름답습니까? 누구의 삶이 우리를 감동시킵니까? 잊지 마십시요. 우리는 세상이 우리를 어떻게 평가하느냐로 평가되지 않습니다. 하나님이 나를 어떻게 평가하느냐로 평가됩니다. 세상에서 성공했다 이것보다 더 중요한 것은 내면의 아름다움입니다. 겉모습보다 하나님으로부터 인정받는 사람이 되시기를 바랍니다.
*말씀을 마칩니다: 바울을 보십시요. 바울은 예수를 믿은 후에 자신의 문제 때문에 사람들에게 비방을 받은 일이 없습니다. 그렇게 많은 고난을 당한 것은 오직 예수 그리스도 때문입니다. 아무리 성공하고 겉치장을 잘했어도 그 속에 거짓과 죄가 있으면 그 사람은 아무 것도 아닙니다.

Title: The Message That the Church Should Proclaim

“But the accusations made against him weren’t any of the crimes I expected. Instead, it was something about their religion and a dead man named Jesus, who Paul insists is alive.” (Acts 25:18-19 – NLT)
Today is the 87th series of the Book of Acts. Today’s scriptures introduced the scene of when King Agrippa came to pay his respect to the governor Festus and where Festus asked King Agrippa for his advice on the matter relating to Paul. Through the confessions of Festus, we will look at why Paul experienced sufferings and through this we will look at the message the church should preach and the kind of lives that we as saints should pursue.
1. The reason why Paul faced hardships: The governor was replaced from Felix to Festus. As soon as Festus was newly appointed, so many people told him that Paul must be killed. As such, Festus thought that Paul must be a very wicked person. But when he examined him, he found that that was not the case. When King Agrippa and Bernice arrived to pay their respects to Festus, the new governor, he told them that he believed that Paul had done nothing wrong and as such he had decided to send him to Caesar to be tried in Rome as per Paul’s request. So he consulted with King Agrippa by saying, “I was at a loss to know how to investigate these things” This is the content of the scriptures from verses 13 to 21.
However, there is something notable in Festus’ consultation with King Agrippa. Festus said, “But the accusations made against him weren’t any of the crimes I expected. Instead, it was something about their religion and a dead man named Jesus, who Paul insists is alive.” (Verses 18-19). So if you put this into today’s terms, it means that Festus initially thought this was going to be a serious matter, but instead he treated it lightly as it was just a matter of whether Jesus Christ was dead or alive. Festus regarded the cross and the resurrection of Jesus Christ as a minor matter since he did not know about it. However, these words of Festus approaches us in a very important way.
Despite that many people say that they believe in Jesus, there are many who think that about the resurrection and cross of Jesus as very trivial and a light matter. Instead, they are more interested in how many people are gathered at a church or how influential it is, while having no actual interest in the crucial crucifixion and resurrection of Jesus Christ. This is how the church becomes weakened. What is it that the church needs to do? The church must bear witness to the cross and the resurrection. There is no way of salvation without a cross. You cannot obtain eternal life without resurrection. You can never overcome the world without having the faith of the cross and resurrection. Why is the church continually weakened? It is because of the vain prosperity theology without the cross. Therefore, to be a surviving church, to be a living church, the church must emphasize the cross and resurrection of Jesus Christ, so that it can become a strong church and the saints can survive.
2. The true content of the accusation against the saints: What was the main point of the Jews’ accusation against Paul’s that Festus told to Agrippa King? It was that there was no criminal evidence against Paul and that this was only a religious issue. In other words, the Jews were stirred up because of the claim that Jesus was resurrected. In this, there is a message that we should ponder today. We just saw the claim of the Jews. We also saw the trial of Felix and Festus. What was the point of these three people? It was that Paul has no problem morally or ethically. Instead, the problem was because of Paul’s claim of the cross and resurrection of Jesus Christ.
So, why do churches and Christians go to the judges today? We do not go because of Jesus like Paul, but instead it is the other way around. People go to prison due to moral or ethical problems or relating to money or the church’s property. But there are a very few people who actually go to court because of Jesus. How many people around us, other than those in the mission field, experience hardships for talking about Jesus and the resurrection or the cross? In short, it’s all about self-interest, greed, wealth, and unethical problems. Sufferings are caused by those things. It is a hardship that comes from not being able to live at one’s own level or beyond one’s ability.
But look at the apostle Paul. After he came to believe in Jesus, he did not suffer because of his problems. There are no hardship faced because of what one has done. The numerous sufferings Paul suffered were only for Jesus Christ, for His name, for His glory, and for His gospel. What is it that you suffer for and why are you being tested? I hope that you will no longer suffer from issues relating to yourself.
In the verse 23 King Agrippa and Bernice appeared dressed in a very pompous and prestigious manner. The word, “pomp”, in Greek is, “fantasia,” which means “over-dressed”. And the high ranking officials and the leading man of the city also appeared in their colorful clothes. Paul was called into the same spot. How poorly must Paul’s face have appeared after he had been in detention for two years? But who is the most beautiful of all the people gathered here when we look with the Christian eyes and hearts? Whose lives touches us? Please do not forget. We do not get evaluated based on how the world evaluates us. We are evaluated based on how God evaluates us. Inner beauty is more important than succeeding in the world. I hope that you will be acknowledged and recognized by God rather than by being evaluated based on your appearance.
Concluding the sermon: Take a look at Paul. After Paul believed in Jesus, he was not slandered by people for his problems. It is only because of Jesus Christ that he suffered so much. No matter how successful you are and how great your appearance may be, if there are lies and sin behind it, then you are nothing.
