제목: 고난을 통한 하나님의 계획

이러므로 섬 가운데 다른 병든 사람들이 와서 고침을 받고 후한 예로 우리를 대접하고 떠날 때에 우리 쓸 것을 배에 실었더라(행28:9-10)
사도행전 강해 94번째 시간입니다. 오늘 본문은 사도 바울이 가이사 앞에 서기 위해 배를 타고 로마로 항해 하는 중에 배가 유라굴로 광풍으로 표류하여 천신만고 끝에 “멜리데” 라고 하는 섬에 상륙하여 약 3개월 동안 머무른 동안 발생했던 두 가지 사건을 기록하고 있습니다. 오늘 우리는 하나님께서 왜 쉽게 바울을 로마에 도착시키지 않으셨는지를 통해 고난을 주시기도 하고 기적을 주시기도 하는 하나님의 섭리를 깨닫는 시간이 되었으면 합니다.
1. 병 주시고 약 주시는 하나님의 섭리: 하나님은 바울을 쉽게 로마로 보내지 않으셨습니다. 몇 년간 감옥에 갇혀 재판을 받게도 하셨고, 또 유라굴로 라는 광풍을 만나 생사를 건 싸움도 하게 하셨습니다. 그런데 오늘 본문은 유라굴로 광풍을 만나 14일 동안 죽을 고생을 다 한 바울 일행 275명이 한 사람도 죽지 않고 멜리데 섬에 상륙하는 기적과 같은 일을 보여줍니다(1절)
천신만고 끝에 멜리데 섬에 상륙한 사람들은 설상가상으로 겨울 소낙비가 쏟아지고 날은 추워 떨 때에 멜리데 섬 사람들이 그들을 동정하여 불을 피워 주며 영접하였는데, 마침 바울이 땔감 나무를 불에 넣기 위해 집어 드는 순간 독사가 나와 바울의 손을 물었습니다(2-3절) 이 뱀이 어떤 뱀인지는 모르지만 4절에 보니까 그것을 본 멜리데 섬 사람들은 바울이 대단히 큰 죄를 지어 신의 노여움을 산 사람이라고 생각을 하였습니다. 그들의 토속 신앙에 따르면 독사에 물려 죽는 사람은 살인자였습니다. 그래서 풍랑에서는 어떻게 구원을 받았으나, 독사에게 물려 결국 죽게 되었으니 바울이 정말 악한 사람이라고 수근거렸습니다(5-6절)
그런데 자기들의 생각과는 달리 바울이 죽지 않으니까 갑자기 태도가 180도 바뀌어서 “신”이라 부르며, 이 일로 인해서 이 섬의 제일 높은 사람인 보블리오가 집으로 초청하여 대접을 하였습니다. 그 때 마침 보블리오의 부친이 열병과 이질에 걸려 있었는데 바울이 들어가 기도하고 안수하여 고쳐줍니다. 그러자 그 소문을 듣고 섬 안의 다른 병자들도 너도 나도 와서 바울을 통해 고침을 받았습니다(7-9절) 이로 인해 대접이 달라져서 겨울이 지나 로마로 떠날 때가 되자 배에서 쓸 것을 준비해 주었습니다(10절)
여기서 우리는 질문이 생깁니다. 안수하여 열병과 이질을 고친 기적을 행하신 하나님, 다른 병든 사람도 다 기도하여 안수함으로 고치신 하나님, 더군다나 독사에게 물려도 조금도 상함이 없게 하신 하나님께서 왜 바울을 쉽게 로마로 인도해 주시지 않으셨는가? 하는 것입니다. 왜 병 주고 약 주시고 하시는가? 하는 것입니다. 풍랑을 만나 죽을 고생을 하게 하고, 겨우 목숨만 살아서 멜리데 섬에 올라가고, 그런데 또 병든 자들을 고치게 하셔서 잘 대접받게 하시고 로마로 가게 하시는 하나님! 왜 이렇게 일을 복잡하게 하시냐 하는 것입니다.
2. 복음 전도의 삶: 먼저 우리는 고난을 주시기도 하고 기적을 주시는 하나님의 섭리를 이해해야 합니다. 우리 생각에는 고난을 당하는 일이 너무 싫은 것입니다. 우리 생각에는 풍랑을 안 만나는 것이 가장 좋은 것입니다. 그런데 생각해 보십시요. 만약에 감옥, 재판, 풍랑, 뱀 이런 생사가 왔다 갔다 하는 고난이 없이 쉽게 로마에 도착했다고 하면 바울이 로마에서 복음 전도 사역을 어떻게 할 수 있었겠습니까? 바울은 로마에 간적도 없었고, 또 친인척이나 아는 사람도 전혀 없는 상황이었습니다.
그런데 바울과 함께 로마로 들어간 275명이나 되는 사람들이 다 바울이 전능하신 하나님이 정말 함께 하시는 놀라운 종이라는 사실을 자신들의 눈으로 본 것입니다. “사도 바울 이 사람은 보통 분이 아닙니다. 정말 하나님은 살아 계시고 이 사람은 하나님이 귀하게 사용하시는 사람이고, 저가 전하는 예수 그리스도 복음은 놀라운 능력이 있는 것을 우리들이 다 눈으로 보고 경험했습니다. 이 사람 때문에 우리가 다 살았고, 우리는 하나님이 역사하는 것을 다 직접 보았습니다.” 275명이 동시에 이렇게 광고하고 다녔으니 로마가 매우 시끄러웠을 것입니다. 그들은 한결같이 자기들 입으로 바울을 통한 하나님의 역사를 전하는 증인이 된 것입니다.
그 증거가 16절에 보면 바울이 로마에 도착해서 이해할 수 없는 자유를 누리는 것을 보게 됩니다. 또 23절에 보면 바울의 집에 사람들이 마음대로 찾아오고 왕래하는데 아무 제약도 없습니다. 그래서 로마에서 복음을 마음껏 전합니다. 어떻게 이런 일이 가능했을까요? 그 이유가 오늘 본문입니다. 하나님은 하나님의 자녀에게 왜 고난을 허락하십니까? 고난을 통하여 하나님이 함께 하심이 어떤 것인가를 증거하여 복음을 더 잘 전하라는 것입니다. 하나님께서 왜 고난을 허락하시거나 이적을 일으키실까요? 복음 때문입니다. 사람들이 십자가의 예수님을 믿게 하려고 고난도 이적도 행하시는 것입니다. 왜 275명 다 살려 주셨습니까? 그 사람들을 하나님의 증인으로 만드시기 위함입니다. 그러므로 여러분! 고난이 오든 이적이 오든 그게 중요한 것이 아닙니다. 고난이냐 이적이냐 보다 더 중요한 것은 예수님의 십자가 복음을 증거하는 것입니다. 우리가 증인이 되는 것입니다.
말씀을 마칩니다: 우리가 고난을 당하든 이적을 경험하든 하나님의 뜻은 오직 하나입니다. 그로 인해서 예수님이 증거 되는 것입니다. 예수님의 사랑이 증거 되는 것입니다. 이 고난과 기적 속에 담겨 있는 하나님의 놀라운 계획을 믿으시기 바랍니다. 하나님의 계획은 우리가 하나님의 십자가 사랑을 전하는 증인이 되는 것입니다. 영원히 죽을 사람이 영원히 사는 사람으로 바꾸어지는 새생명의 역사를 위함입니다.
The Plan of God through Hardships

Title: The Plan of God through Hardships

“Then all the other sick people on the island came and were healed. As a result we were showered with honors, and when the time came to sail, people supplied us with everything we would need for the trip. (Acts 28:9-10 – NLT)
Today is the 94th series of the Book of Acts. Today’s scriptures described two events that occurred while apostle Paul was sailing to Rome to stand in front of Caesar. At the end of many difficulties, the ship had drifted because of the northeaster storm and it landed on an island called “Malta.” Today, I hope that we will be able to realize God’s providence, by looking at why God did not allow Paul to easily arrive to Rome, but instead gave him both hardships and miracles.
1. God’s providence that gives us both suffering and healing: God did not send Paul to Rome easily. He was imprisoned for several years and tried. He also met a storm called the northeaster where he had to fight for life and death. However, today’s scriptures showed the miracle of Paul and the 275 men who all landed safely to the island of Malta, after they had almost died from suffering in the northeaster storm for 14 days (verse 1).
To make matters worse, when they arrived to Malta after many hardships, they were faced with the winter rain and it was very cold. So the islanders of Malta showed them unusual kindness by building a fire and welcoming them all. However, while Paul put the brushwood he gathered on the fire, a viper came out and bit Paul on the hand (verses 2 to 3). We do not know what kind of snake it was, but if we look at verse 4, the islanders of Malta who saw this thought that Paul was a murderer. According to their native belief, the islanders believed that a person who was bitten by a viper was a murderer. So they gossiped that Paul was a very wicked person, because even though Paul had escaped from the sea, they thought that he would eventually die from being bitten by the snake.
However, contrary to their thoughts, Paul did not die, and suddenly their attitude changed 180 degrees, calling him “god.” Through this, Publius, the chief official of the island invited them to his home where he welcome them with hospitability. At that time, Publius’ father had a fever and dysentery. Paul went in, prayed, and placed his hands on him and healed him. Then, after hearing the rumors, the rest of the sick on the island came and were cured (verses 7-9). So through this, their treatment changed and when they were ready to leave for Rome again after winter passed, the people furnished them with the supplies they needed.
Here we have a question. The God who worked the miracle of healing fever and dysentery by the placing of the hands, the God who healed the rest of the sick on the island, and the God who did not allow Paul to suffer any ill effects from the snake that bit him on the hand – why did He not allow Paul to easily travel to Rome? Why did God give both hardships and medicine to Paul? Paul experienced significant hardships in the storm and barely survived by reaching the Malta island. Furthermore, God enabled him to heal the sick and also receive good treatment from them before heading for Rome. Why did God make things so complicated?
2. The life of evangelism: First, we must understand God’s providence of suffering and miracles. In our opinion, we do not want to suffer. In our opinion, it is best not to meet the storm. But let’s think about it. How could Paul have done evangelism in Rome if he had arrived in Rome without suffering from prisons, trials, storms, and snakes? Paul had never been to Rome and had no relatives or acquaintances.
But all of the 275 people who went to Rome with Paul saw with their own eyes that Paul was an amazing servant of the Almighty God. “This man, apostle Paul, is not an ordinary man. Indeed, we have seen with eyes and experienced that God is alive, and that this man is valuably used by God, and that the gospel of Jesus Christ, which is what he preaches, has amazing power. We survived because of this man and we directly saw God at work.” Rome was very noisy because these 275 people were advertising like this all at the same time. They all became witnesses with their mouths of the work of God through Paul.
The evidence is in verse 16, which shows that Paul enjoyed incomprehensible freedom when he arrived in Rome. Also, in verse 23, there were no restrictions on people coming and going to Paul’s house. That’s why he was able to preach the gospel in Rome all he wanted. How was this possible? That reason is in today’s scriptures. Why does God allow suffering for His children? It is so that we can preach the gospel better by witnessing who God is by experiencing that God is with us through our hardships. Why does God allow suffering or bring miracles? It is because of the gospel. He allows both suffering and miracles in order to make people believe Jesus Christ. Why did God save the 275 people? It was to make them witnesses of God. Therefore everyone, it does not matter whether hardships or miracles comes or not. What is more important than suffering or miracles is to witness the gospel of Jesus’ cross. It is about us becoming witnesses.
Concluding the sermon: Whether we experience hardships or miracles, God’s will is only this: That through this, Jesus is witnessed. It is testifying of the love of Jesus. I hope that we will all believe in God’s wonderful plan that is in hardships and miracles. God’s plan is for us to be witnesses of the love of God’s cross. It is the work to change a person who is to die eternally to a new life of a person who lives forever.
